Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The New Territories Recreation Bus Route 230R is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Kowloon Station and Ma Wan (Pak Yan Road), via Tsim Sha Tsui and MTR Nam Cheong Station.

As the first regular franchised bus route on Ma Wan Island, Route 230R provides convenience for passengers travelling between Ma Wan Park and the urban, with a themed electronic destination signage based on "Noah's Ark", the hotspot inside the park.

History[]

Commencing background[]

The development and operation of Ma Wan Park is undertaken by Ma Wan Park Limited, a company wholly owned by Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP), of which Phase 2 includes the restoration and refurbishment of the long-deserted Ma Wan Old Village. The Government announced on 31 March 2021 that the land grant had been executed and SHKP was required to complete and commence operation of Ma Wan Park Phase 2 within three years from the date of the land grant. Sun Hung Kai believes that the continuous loss of Ma Wan Park is due to the traffic restrictions, and therefore discussed with the government departments for the relaxation of such restrictions and the introduction of franchised buses.[1]

To tie in with the completion and commencement of operation of Ma Wan Park Phase 2 in the first quarter of 2024, the Transport Department (TD) proposed in January 2023 to introduce holiday franchised bus routes between Ma Wan (Pak Yan Road) and Kowloon Station, with an intermediate detour via a section of Sham Mong Road at Nam Cheong Station.[2] The route was awarded to KMB through open tender and was numbered as 230R.

Route change history[]

  • 3 February 2024: Route 230R entered service. [3][4]
  • 2 March 2024: A $0.5 interchange concession with MTR was introduced with the designated interchange station at Nam Cheong Station, which was valid until 29 December 2024.[5]
  • 23 December 2024: Enhanced to daily service:[6]
    • The service hours from Kowloon Station were changed to 10:00 - 21:00, and from Ma Wan (Pak Yan Road) to 11:00 - 22:00;
    • The service hours on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays to 09:00 - 21:30 from Kowloon Station and to from Ma Wan (Pak Yan Road) 11:00 - 22:30.

Route 230R was established to facilitate passenger journeys between Ma Wan Park and the urban area, but has incurred losses and faced operational difficulties. On 4 March 2025, the park's second phase was officially named "Ma Wan 1868". This route has seen rising passenger numbers on weekends and public holidays, particularly during festivals or major events, where flexible additional services can accommodate sudden surges in visitor numbers. However, weekday ridership remains low. District councillors observed that visitors did not concentrate on this route as anticipated, instead dispersing across various PITCL bus services, affecting local residents' access. The sole bus stop within Ma Wan is distant from residential areas, inconveniencing residents. Recommendations include establishing additional stops in Ma Wan and Tsim Sha Tsui, or liaising with the Tourism Board for promotional support. KMB maintains a positive and open stance towards station expansion proposals. It previously applied to the Transport Department for a stop near Beach Commercial Complex on Pak Lam Road roundabout and received support. However, as this section falls under private management, KMB has yet to secure permission from the property owner. Indeed, since the route's inception, District Council members have noted that its passage along Pak Yan Road means users include not only Park Island residents but also visitors. They have urged the authorities to consider shared maintenance responsibilities. Subsequently, proposals were made to explore the Government acquiring ownership of Pak Yan Road and Pak Lai Road, thereby assuming responsibility for routine maintenance.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

Among the aforementioned proposals, only the extension to Tsim Sha Tsui has been granted consultation and subsequently implemented.[13]

This special concession is not applicable to other LWB A routes (including Routes A36, A37 and A43).

Same-day Return Discount[]

Passengers may enjoy a 10% discount on the return journey when interchange from Kowloon to Ma Wan by using the same Octopus card or the same electronic payment gateway account within the same day. The offer can be shared with the Octopus Interchange concession on the bus itself. The system will calculate the interchange concession on the bus itself before calculating the 10% return trip discount.

Bus deployments[]

This route is operated by BYD B12D buses for the whole route, which is the first KMB route to be entirely operated by double-decker electric buses. When electric buses are not available, double-decker diesel buses may be used instead.

This route will be served by single-decker diesel or electric buses instead when Stage 1 strong wind traffic management measures are implemented at Tsing Ma Bridge.

Besides, there are also order buses from Route 6 and one of the buses is required to order on Route 61M.
