Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The Kowloon Urban Bus Route 1A is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Sau Mau Ping (Central) and Star Ferry, via Kwun Tong Town Centre, Kowloon Bay (Kwun Tong Road), San Po Kong (Prince Edward Road East), Kowloon City, Boundary Street (←)/Prince Edward Road West (→), Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei (Nathan Road) and Jordan.

Route 1A is widely regarded as the undisputed champion of trunk routes, with KMB itself viewing it as a show-off route by repeatedly pioneering new developments in both the local and global bus industries through its deployment of vehicles on this route, such as becoming the world's first route to operate tri-axle low-floor double-decker buses in 1997.

This route introduced air-conditioned buses as early as February 1991, becoming KMB's fourth route to implement such arrangements.[Remark 1] After 21 years and 3 months, it was upgraded to full air-conditioned service in May 2012. It holds the distinction of being Hong Kong's longest-running route to offer both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses concurrently, and remains one of KMB's final ten fully air-conditioned routes.

History[]

Summary of changes[]

  • 4 June 1968: Route 1A entered service, running between Kwun Tong (Yue Man Square) and Star Ferry.[1][2]
  • 15 September 1975: Extended to Sau Mau Ping (Central).[3]

Detailed history[]

Detailed history of KMB Route 1A

Route 2B was the main route between Kowloon East and Yau Tsim Mong, but it did not serve the area south of Yau Ma Tei. Coinciding with the demolition of older residential buildings in the Yau Ma Tei area to make way for public facilities[Remark 2]", the majority of residents relocated to Block 7 of Ngau Tau Kok Lower Estate. In order to facilitate the original residents to travel to and from Yau Tsim Mong, the Administration reorganised the Mong Kok service after the rehousing of the residents of Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate and introduced this route serving Yau Ma Tei and Tsim Sha Tsui to replace Route 2B, and supplemented it with another Route 11A.[4]

  • 4 June 1968: Route 1A entered service, running between Kwun Tong (Yue Man Square) and Star Ferry, with the Kwun Tong terminus located at eastbound Yue Man Square near Tung Yan Street.[1][2]
  • 1 July 1970: All section fares were cancelled.[5]
  • 15 September 1971: Extended to Sau Mau Ping (Central) with the fare increased from 20 cents to 40 cents.[3]
  • 13 March 1974: To facilitate construction of the Prince Edward Road to Lai Chi Kok Road flyover, the route towards Sau Mau Ping (Central) was diverted via Playing Field Road, Portland Street, Boundary Street, Fa Yuen Street, Prince Edward Road, Sai Yee Street, Flower Market Road and Yuen Ngai Street before proceeding to Prince Edward Road and no longer turning right directly from Nathan Road.[6]
  • 9 January 1975: Rerouted via Knight Street in lieu of Short Street for Sau Mau Ping (Central) direction.
  • 12 December 1975: Rerouted via Embankment Road in lieu of Knight Street for Sau Mau Ping (Central) direction from 10am onwards.[7]
  • 1976: In response to the construction of the Mass Transit Railway Modified Initial System, traffic diversions were implemented towards Sau Mau Ping (Central):
    • 28 January: After turning onto Boundary Street, the route proceeded directly to the Junction Road intersection, no longer passing via Flower Market Road and Prince Edward Road.
    • 3 March: From 10:00 am, the route was diverted via Public Square Street, Shanghai Street, Mong Kok Road, Sai Yee Street, Flower Market Road, Yuen Ngai Street, Prince Edward Road and Embankment Road to resume the original routing at Boundary Street.[8]
  • 23 September 1980: The route towards Sau Mau Ping (Central) was diverted via Waterloo Road to Shanghai Street in lieu of Public Square Street to accommodate the restoration of two-way traffic on Nathan Road between Kansu Street and Waterloo Road[9]; however, this change was reversed on 10 December of the same year.
  • 29 December 1986: Rerouted via Prince Edward Road West (westbound) and ung Choi Street to Boundary Street for Sau Mau Ping (Central) direction, no longer passing through Flower Market Road and Yuen Ngai Street.
  • 10 February 1991: Air-conditioned bus service was introduced.
  • 25 September 1992: Rerouted via Argyle Street and Reclamation Street to Mong Kok Road for Sau Mau Ping (Central) direction to accommodate Shanghai Street becoming one-way southbound.

After the millennium[]

  • 28 July 2002: New stops were added at "Soy Street" and "Wing Sing Lane" on Nathan Road to replace the stop at "Pitt Street" on Nathan Road.[10]
  • 19 October 2002: New interchange concessions with routes 95 and 270A were introduced.[11]
  • 16 July 2003: The first bus time from Star Ferry was advanced from 06:27 to 06:00.[12]
  • 5 July 2010: Air-conditioned bus service was enhanced.[13]
  • 7 May 2012: Upgraded to a full air-conditioned service.[14][15]
  • 27 June 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) enquiry service was introduced to this route.[16]
  • 18 July 2017: The "Rhythm Garden" stop on Prince Edward Road East for Sau Mau Ping (Central) direction was relocated temporarily to outside Prince Industrial Building with the demolition works of K9 flyover traversing the Prince Edward Road East.
  • 12 February 2018: Interchange concession with Route 9 was introduced to coincide with the route no longer serving Star Ferry from the same date onwards.[17][18]
  • 1 March 2019: The "King Tai Street" stop for Sau Mau Ping (Central) direction was relocated temporarily to outside Block 5, Rhythm Garden until 30 June 2021 to facilitate the roadworks at Prince Edward Road East near King Tai Court[19], which was later relocated back to the stop location before 18 July 2017.[20]
  • 12 July 2021: The first bus time from Sau Mau Ping (Central) was advanced from 05:30 to 05:15.[21]

Public activities[]

In recent years, Kowloon Motor Bus has frequently deployed distinctive vehicle models on Route 1A and organised public relations events at Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier to attract public and bus enthusiast attention.

The Enviro500 MMC Hybrid 12m bus (ATH2) equipped with a Euro VI engine has been assigned to this route for testing since its introduction into service. On the morning of 11 November 2014, following a press conference at Star Ferry, KMB deployed the hybrid bus for its debut trip on this route[22][23], marking Hong Kong's first double-decker air-conditioned low-floor bus operating with a Euro VI hybrid diesel-electric engine on any route.

The world's first three-axle double-decker low-floor bus (ATR1) returned to its inaugural route prior to retirement. 21 September 2015 marked its final day of service. KMB organised a "Farewell Hong Kong's first Super low-floor double-decker bus" event. The bus captain responsible for the inaugural service piloted the final journey departing from Sau Mau Ping (Central) at 17:45 and upon the bus's arrival at Star Ferry terminus, the "New Era Bus" – a vehicle of profound significance in Hong Kong's bus development history – was honourably retired.[24]

KMB's new "Heartbeat of the City" livery made its public debut in May 2017 with routes 1A, 960 and 978 being the first to receive buses sporting this new colour scheme. The first Volvo B9TL (AVBWU563/UW5437) in the new livery entered service on this route on 28 June 2017. On 13 August that year, KMB organised an experience day of "Red Buses" on Route 1A in which 30 "Heartbeat of the City" liveried buses from various depots were deployed on Route 1A, turning the entire route "all red". Additionally, from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm that day, a booth was set up at Star Ferry, offering complimentary Red Bus postcards, DIY paper bus models, and model discount coupons and participants who took photographs with the Red Bus were provided with a complimentary photo printing service.[25]
