Bus deployment evolution history[]
| Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 16 |
|---|
|
Route 16 was one of the last 4 routes providing non-air-conditioned bus services, and one of the scheduled non-air-conditioned buses GK9063 was affixed with the "Farewell to non-air-conditioned bus (2012)" promotional banner At the beginning of the operation of Route 16, Daimler/Leyland Fleetline (D) was used as the main vehicle. In the 1980s, it was replaced by Leyland Victory II (G), and after the extension to Kwong Tin Estate in 1993, it was replaced by three-axle buses, mainly Leyland Olympian 11m (S3BL, including S3BL185/DR3414, which was involved in a traffic accident in 1987 and had its front end re-installed with a smaller plate box). It was also served by Leyland Olympian9.6m (BL). When air-conditioned buses were added to the route in 1993, they were mainly Leyland Olympian 11m (AL), and in 1994, they were replaced by Volvo Olympian 11m (AV). In the 21st century, low-floor service was introduced on this route with a Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV), and in 2004, Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) joined this route, and a Wright-bodied Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBW54/MM3891) between 2006 and 2007, and Neoplan Centroliner 12m (AP, all withdrawn) in 2007; and in 2009, the non-air-conditioned buses were mainly replaced by the Non-air-conditioned Volvo Olympian 11m (S3V) and Dennis Dragon 11m (S3N), and the Volvo Olympian 12m (3AV) were added to the route at the same time. As at 2011, there were still four scheduled non-air-conditioned buses on this route (two Volvo Olympian 11m S3V15/GK9063, S3V26/GL258 and two Dennis Dragon 11m S3N341/FZ6737, S3N363/GA5311), which was the route with largest number of non-air-conditioned buses at that time. One of them (S3V15) was affixed with a "Farewell KMB Non-Air-Conditioned Bus 2012" banner in late 2011, while the other scheduled non-air-conditioned bus (Dennis Dragon S3N363) was also affixed with a JR Team-produced non-air-conditioned bus banner, which was removed in April 2012, and the former was retired from service due to a broken-down vehicle that could not be repaired and was replaced by the same model from the former Route 3C (S3V11/GK8522). On 30 April 2012, the air-conditioned bus service of this route was enhanced and the original non-air-conditioned bus (S3V26) was replaced by the same type of air-conditioned bus (AV355/HN1877). On 7 May 2012, all non-air-conditioned buses of this route were replaced by Dennis Dragon (S3N363, S3N366/GA6072, formerly scheduled buses of Route 7M; S3N369/GA6324, formerly scheduled bus of Route 1A). Before this route was converted to fully air-conditioned service, it was at one time the last and only KMB route with more than one non-air-conditioned bus as scheduled buses, and as of the day before the full air-conditioning there were still three scheduled non-air-conditioned buses. On 9 May 2012, this route was converted to fully air-conditioned service and the three remaining non-air-conditioned buses (S3N363, S3N366, S3N369) were replaced by a Dennis Trident 12m double-decker air-conditioned bus (ATR86/HY8728, which has been redeployed to Route 38) originally on Route 26, and a Volvo Olympian 11m double-decker air-conditioned bus (AV475/HT4330, which has been redeployed to Route 11K) originally from Route 59A belonging to KMB Tuen Mun Depot and a Volvo Super Olympian 12-metre double-decker air-conditioned bus (3ASV101/JV2771) formerly on Route 5. A Volvo B9TL (AVBW6/MC2533) was used to test the new stop announcement system on this route between 22 September and 1 November 2012 after full air-conditioning. 2The year 2015 saw the addition of Enviro500 12m (ATE, withdrawn) and Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBE, withdrawn) buses to the service. By the end of April 2015, the vehicles were finally fully low-floorised. In order to comply with Low Emission Zone (LEZ) standards, two Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU159/SJ251, ATENU618/TN2434, both withdrawn) were added to this route in December 2015 running on the S03 and 50 running orders respectively to facilitate order shifts running on Routes 2A, 2X, 101 and 603 through the LEZ. The latter two running orders have been replaced by the SCR-equipped Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV415/KR8423, withdrawn) and the Facelift-bodied Enviro500 MMC (ATENU988/UB8135, withdrawn) respectively. The Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) became responsible for the dispatch of vehicles on this route on 1 September 2016, with two Volvo Super Olympians (3ASV77/JP6253, 3ASV203/KE7936, both withdrawn) switched to the depot's management, and then replaced by buses of the same type equipped with plastic rollsigns; and by the end of April 2017, the Scania K280UD 12m (ASUD) was dispatched to replace the Volvo Super Olympians. From May 2017, Kowloon Bay Depot (K) added high-loading versions of Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) to its service, some of which were B9TLs using the 'Heartbeat of The City' red body colour to gradually replace the original scheduled buses. In July of the following year, all of the depot's scheduled buses were replaced with the high-capacity version Volvo B9TL (AVBWU). With effect from 13 August 2018, the two running orders belonging to Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) were transferred back to Kowloon Bay Depot (K), so that the entire route is uniformly served by the high-capacity version Volvo B9TL (AVBWU). In August 2022, Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) buses were gradually reintroduced on this route to fully replace the high-capacity version Volvo B9TL (AVBWU). |

Last service day of KMB non-air-conditioned buses[]
The scene as the last non-air-conditioned buses on Route 16 arrived at Lam Tin (Kwong Tin Estate) one after another showed that many bus fans and members of the public who wanted to bid farewell to the "hot dogs" gathered at the terminus to witness the historic moment
Template:See Also 8 May 2012 marked the final day of non-air-conditioned bus services operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). Among the four remaining routes offering non-air-conditioned services at the time, this route was the last to operate its final non-air-conditioned service (the final non-air-conditioned service normally departed from Mong Kok (Park Avenue) at 00:02 on 9 May) This meant that the last non-air-conditioned bus on this route that day would be the last passenger-carrying non-air-conditioned bus in the entire city, attracting a large number of bus enthusiasts and members of the public to come and take photos, ride the bus, and reminisce, witnessing this historic moment.
To handle the large crowd for the non-air-conditioned last bus on this route, KMB deployed multiple non-air-conditioned buses that evening to provide support. As a result, the non-air-conditioned last bus on that day ultimately had eight non-air-conditioned buses departing from Mong Kok (Park Avenue) in succession. Among them, two buses (S3V27/GL390 and S3N365/GA5685) were assigned to the Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) (with GL390 having previously operated the last Route 5A bus that evening), marking a rare "cross-depot special sight". Each non-air-conditioned bus operating the final "hot dog" service that evening was packed with passengers, leaving no empty seats.
With the final non-air-conditioned bus S3V26 (GL258) departing from Mong Kok (Park Avenue) arriving at Lam Tin (Kwong Tin Estate) around 1 a.m. on 9 May to drop off passengers, this route was officially converted to full air-conditioned service, marking the end of the "hot dog bus" era and non-air-conditioned buses no longer operated on Hong Kong's franchised bus routes.
