History[]

Initial service period[]

  • 24 September 1967: Route 14 entered service, running between Yau Tong and Jordan Road Ferry. It was the first route in Hong Kong to operate as a semi-direct route, stopping only at stops along Jordan Road, near Airport Tunnel, as well as between Kwun Tong and Yau Tong.[1]
  • Early 1968: Yau Tong terminus was relocated from on-street on Yau Tong Road into Yan Wing Street[Remark 1] between Blocks 8 and 11 of Yau Tong Estate, outside the open area of Yau Tong Hawker Bazaar, i.e. the area around today's Evangelize China Fellowship Holy Word School.
  • 1 July 1970: All section fares were cancelled and the full fare was lowered.[2]
  • 16 September 1973: Yau Tong terminus was relocated from Yan Wing Street to Yau Tong (Ko Chiu Road) with the completion of Ko Chiu Road Estate.[3]
  • 8 August 1982: The semi-direct route arrangement was cancelled and instead called at all stops enroute.
  • 13 May 1987: Journeys towards Jordan Road Ferry was rerouted via westbound Ko Long Road to directly access Lei Yue Mun Road, omitting eastbound Ko Long Road and Ko Chiu Road.
  • 25 May 1988: Journeys to Yau Tong were rerouted via Ko Chiu Road and Ko Long Road to access the terminus with the conversion of Ko Long Road into a one-way westbound road.
  • 10 December 1988: Yau Tsim Mong terminus was relocated from Jordan Road Ferry to China Ferry Terminal.
  • 18 April 1990: Detoured via Lam Tin Bus Terminus for Yau Tong direction.[4]
  • 31 March 1991: A new section fare from Kwun Tong Town Centre to Yau Tong was introduced.
  • 29 October 1992: Air-conditioned bus service was introduced.
  • 4 December 1995: Detoured via Ko Chiu Road around the area of Ko Yee Estate and Ko Chun Court for both directions with the intake of Ko Chun Court.
  • 22 June 1998: Yau Tsim Mong terminus was relocated from China Ferry Terminal to MTR Kowloon Station with the opening of MTR Tung Chung Line.[5]
    • Due to its ineffectiveness, the former was resumed as the terminus from 1 November of the same year.[6]
  • 30 November 1998: Ko Chiu Road terminus was permanently closed and the Yau Tong terminus was relocated to the temporary terminus at Ko Chiu Road near Ko Yee Estate.
  • 15 September 1999: Yau Tong terminus was relocated to on-street on Yan Wing Street, and was renamed "Yau Tong".[7]

After the millennium[]

  • 5 November 2000: Rerouted via Kwun Tong Road Underpass for China Ferry Terminal direction, with the stop at Kwun Tong MTR Station being cancelled.
  • 27 January 2002: A new Octopus interchange concession with Route 2A was introduced.
  • 20 April 2005: Yau Tong terminus was relocated to the newly-completed Yan Wing Street Temporary Bus Terminus.

  • 10 September 2011: Enhanced to full air-conditioned service.[8]
  • 2 July 2012: Yau Tong terminus was relocated to the Yau Tong Public Transport Interchange located at the base of Domain shopping centre in conjunction with its opening; also, additional stops were added at "Yau Tong Centre" and "Ka Wing Street" for Yau Tong direction.[9][10]
  • 12 October 2013: Interchange concession with Route 215X was introduced with the diversion of Route 14X and the cancellation of Route 219P.[11][12]
  • 5 September 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) Enquiry System was added to this route.[13]
  • 15 September 2016: Yau Tong terminus was relocated to Lei Yue Mun Estate:[14][15]
    • Journeys to Lei Yue Mun Estate would enter the new terminus directly from Yan Wing Street, with the original stops at Yau Tong Centre, Ka Wing Street and Yau Tong Public Transport Interchange being cancelled.
    • Journeys to China Ferry Terminal would route via Yan Wing Street, Cha Kwo Ling Road and Ko Chiu Road after departing from Lei Yue Mun Estate before entering the Yau Tong Public Transport Interchange and resuming the original routing, with a new stop at "Ka Wing Street" and an en-route stop at the original terminus.
  • 5 May 2018: Rerouted via Kwun Tong Road Underpass for Lei Yue Mun Estate direction with the stop at "Kwun Tong Station" being cancelled.[16][17]

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 14

Route 14 initially operated with Daimler E buses. Following its extension to Ko Chiu Road in 1973, additional AEC Regent V buses were deployed. During the 1980s, the fleet was replaced with Dennis Jubilant (N). In 1985, a trial run was conducted using a Dennis Dragon 12m (3N) three-axle bus, originally from Route 116 (3N7/DA7269)[26][27]; later, Daimler Fleetline (D) buses were temporarily reinstated. In 1988, the route was assigned Dennis Dragon 11m (S3N) tri-axle buses, followed by the introduction of Leyland Olympian (S3BL) buses.[28]

In 1992, Dennis Dragon 11m (AD) buses were introduced. In 2001, Volvo Olympian 12m (3AV) buses were added. Entering the 21st century, Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) low-floor buses were introduced, replaced in 2015 by Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV) buses.

As of 2011, two non-air-conditioned buses remained being scheduled buses on this route (Dennis Dragon 11m S3N324/FZ7937 and S3N335/FZ7458, with the former operating only during weekday peak hours).

On 10 September 2011, the route transitioned to full air-conditioned service. The remaining two non-air-conditioned buses (S3N324, S3N335) were replaced by two Volvo Olympian 12m double-decker air-conditioned buses (3AV101/GP7359, 3AV105/GP7842).

To complement the introduction of Route 14X, this route received an additional Volvo Olympian (3AV206/HD8854) and a Volvo Super Olympian (3ASV120/JX6847) in 2013, marking the first deployment of buses with electronic destination signs on this route. From 2015 onwards, the number of Volvo Super Olympian buses (3ASV series; AVW with Wright Explorer bodywork introduced in June 2019, since withdrawn) in the fleet was steadily increased; by the end of June that year, the entire route was operated exclusively by this model, marking the full transition to low-floor vehicles across the service.

In September 2018, Enviro500 MMC (ATENU) buses were introduced to the route. In December of the same year, Volvo B9TL buses (AVBWU, since withdrawn; AVBW with Wright Gemini bodywork, introduced in March 2020 and since withdrawn; AVBE with Enviro500 MKII bodywork, temporarily introduced in February 2021 for e-payment system implementation) were added. By June 2020, the entire fleet had been upgraded to full straight-staircase bus deployments.

In February 2021, KMB deployed buses equipped with the e-payment system on designated routes and this route saw the introduction of Enviro500 12m buses (ATE, since withdrawn).
