The Kowloon Urban Bus Route 11X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between On Tai (North) and Hung Hom Station, via On Tat Estate, Sau Mau Ping, Kwun Tong Mid-levels (Hip Wo Street), Kwun Tong Business Area and To Kwa Wan.
Route 11X takes Kai Fuk Road and the Kai Tak Tunnel to reach To Kwa Wan Road between Kwun Tong and To Kwa Wan on the outward journey, while travelling via Ma Tau Wai Road towards San Po Kong (Prince Edward Road East) before ascending the Kwun Tong Bypass for the inbound journey. It was once the sole bus route designated as "Express" in the Schedule of Routes Order[1], until its removal in 2017.[2]
History[]
Merger of old routes linking Hung Hom and Sau Mau Ping in expressways[]
This route was formerly routes 5B, 13A and 13K.
- Route 13A commenced service on 28 April 1964, which ran between Hung Hom Ferry and Upper Sau Mau Ping.
- Route 5B commenced service on 1 June 1965, which ran between Hung Hom Ferry and Kwun Tong Ferry.
In 1994, Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) commissioned a consultancy firm to conduct a route rationalisation study. One of the study's recommendations was to merge routes 5K and 13A into a single service. This proposal was adopted by KMB and implemented on 19 March 1995, with the new combined route designated as 13K.
- 22 June 1997: Route 11X entered service to replace Route 13K, which ran between Upper Sau Mau Ping and Kowloon Station. Kowloon Station bound journeys were rerouted via Airport Tunnel, while Sau Mau Ping bound journeys were rerouted via Hung Hom Industrial Area (Hung Hom Road, Bailey Street) and Kwun Tong Bypass. In terms of route numbers, Route 11X was the last full non-air-conditioned route to be launched.[3]
- 28 December 1997: Kowloon Station bound journeys were rerouted Wuhu Street, Taku Street, Bulkeley Street, Ming On Street, Baker Street and Gillies Avenue South, no longer passing through Tak Man Street, Hung Hom Road and Hung Hom South Road.[4]
- 2 September 2001: Air-conditioned bus service was introduced.[5]
- 13 November 2001: Upper Sau Mau Ping bound journeys were rerouted via Metropolis Drive, Hung Lai Road and Hung Hom South Road after departing from Hung Hom KCR Station to facilitate the deployment of buses with length of 11 metres or longer.[6]
- 4 May 2003: Detoured via Sau Mau Ping (Central) Bus Terminus for Hung Hom KCR Station direction.
- 27 December 2004: Rerouted to proceed directly to Gillies Avenue South from Bulkeley Street for Hung Hom KCR Station direction, no longer detouring via Ming On Street and Baker Street; a new stop was added at "Bulkeley Street" to replace the "Ming On Street" stop.[7]
- 15 March 2005: The stop at "Tsun Yip Lane" on Kwun Tong Road was cancelled and replaced by "apm Millennium City 5" for Hung Hom KCR Station direction.
- 21 January 2011: Enhanced to full air-conditioned service[8], making it the last Kowloon Urban express route to do so.
- 5 September 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) Enquiry System was added to this route.[9]
- 14 February 2020: A $1 interchange concession with MTR was introduced with the opening of MTR Tuen Ma Line Phase 1, with the designated interchange stations being Kai Tak Station, Whampoa Station and Hung Hom Station.[10][11]
- 13 December 2020: With the completion of repositioning works at Ma Tau Wai Road, the "Tin Kwong Road To Kwa Wan" stop for Upper Sau Mau Ping bound was cancelled and replaced by "Sheung Heung Road" stop instead.[12][13]
Extension to Anderson[]
Since the completion and occupation of On Tat Estate and On Tai Estate, the Transport Department has consistently cited "alleviating traffic congestion in Kwun Tong Town Centre" as grounds for refusing to introduce direct public transport services to the town centre. Residents have been forced to rely on footbridges to reach Sau Mau Ping or Sze Shun, where they must then catch connecting buses. Even when KMB introduced Route 213B to Kwun Tong on 25 March 2019, it operated solely during morning peak hours.
In the 2019-2020 Bus Route Planning Programme, this route was proposed to be extended to On Tai Estate to facilitate residents' travel to Kwun Tong, To Kwa Wan and Hung Hom. However, local residents largely criticised Route 11X for its high fares, pointing out that Wo Lok Estate residents already faced difficulties boarding buses during the current morning rush hour; extending the route would inevitably exacerbate their plight.[14] Subsequently, residents of Sau Mau Ping initiated a petition opposing the extension, demanding the Transport Department establish a new route to serve the new area. However, the lack of concrete proposals provoked resentment among Anderson Estate residents.[15]
Following coordination between the Kwun Tong District Council, the Transport Department, and KMB, along with on-site trial runs, the route's On Tai terminus was designated at the lay-by opposite Tak Tai House on On Yan Street.
- 8 March 2021: Extended from Upper Sau Mau Ping to On Tai (North):[16][17]
- After departing from On Tai (North), the route would operate via On Yan Street, On Sau Road, Po Lam Road, Sau Mau Ping Road and Hiu Kwong Street to return to the original routing, with new stops added at "Oi Tat House", "On Tat Estate" on On Sau Road and "Po Tat Estate" on Po Lam Road;
- Journeys towards On Tai (North) omitted Upper Sau Mau Ping Bus Terminus after reaching Hiu Kwong Street and instead rerouted via Sau Mau Ping Road, Po Lam Road, On Sau Road, On Chui Street, On Sau Road and On Yan Street towards the new terminus, with new stops added at "Upper Sau Mau Ping" on Hiu Kwong Street, "Po Tat Estate" on Po Lam Road, "Sin Tat House" on On Chui Street, "Oi Tat House" on On Sau Road and "On Tai (South)" on On Yan Street.
- The first bus time from On Tai (North) was advanced to 05:30.
- 2 January 2022: Interchange concession with MTR was cancelled.[18]
- 15 December 2024: A new stop was added at "Kwun Tong Station" on Kwun Tong Road and at "Kam Tai House" on On Sau Road for On Tai (North) direction.[19]
