The New Territories Recreation Route R8 is jointly operated by Citybus and Long Win Bus (LWB). It runs circular between Disneyland and the Lantau Link BBI [Remark 1], and is designed to facilitate passengers from the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort area to travel to and from the urban area by connecting to various airport bus routes or North Lantau External Routes, and will detour additionally via the Inspiration Lake Recreation Centre during its opening hours.

Geographically, all the stops along Route R8 are located on Lantau Island, but in terms of local administration, it belongs to Tsuen Wan District [1]; therefore, this route is a Tsuen Wan District bus route, not an Islands District bus route.

Due to the road design issues, after dropping off passengers at the Lantau Link BBI eastbound, there is no other road for buses to go directly to the westbound stop, so buses have to pass through the Tsing Ma Bridge eastbound and turn around at the North West Tsing Yi Interchange in Kwai Tsing to return to the westbound route for picking up passengers at the westbound stop.

History[]

During the construction period of Hong Kong Disneyland, the Government made plans for the park's public transport services, including the addition of a new route, D1, to and from the Lantau Link Toll Plaza, to facilitate interchanges with other airport buses or external routes in North Lantau for travelling to and from different parts of Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories.

  • 22 June 2005: The Government announced the opening arrangements for Hong Kong Disneyland and the Penny's Bay Development Area, and the numbering of Route D1 was changed to "R8". [2]
  • 16 August 2005: Route R8 came into service, jointly operated by Citybus and Long Win Bus (LWB). [3][4]
  • 15 May 2006: The last bus time was delayed to 00:05. [5]
  • 17 April 2016: Estimated Time of Arrival Enquiry System was introduced for KMB trips.[6][7]
  • 5 February 2018: The last bus of the day was changed to terminate at the Lantau Link Toll Plaza westbound stop and would not return to Disneyland. [8][9][10]
  • 28 May 2018: "Next Bus" Arrival Time Enquiry Service was added to Citybus trips of this route.[11]
  • 15 March 2020: A new e-payment system was piloted on LWB trips, with fare charging methods divided into three categories: contactless credit card, mobile payment and 2D payment. Currently, a total of seven payment methods are supported, including contactless Visa, MasterCard and UnionPay cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, as well as AlipayHK's "Easy Payment" and UnionPay's "Ride Code". Passengers can continue to enjoy Interchange concessions between routes. The new fare system is not included in the Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme and the $2 Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities. [12][13]

Bus Deployment Evolution History[]

Bus Deployment Evolution History of Disneyland Shuttle Bus Route R8

At the beginning of service of Route R8, Citybus operated Dennis Trident (22XX) double-decker buses, while LWB operated Enviro500 (801-803), which was the latest bus registered at that time. Due to overestimation of patronage by the bus companies, the popularity of travelling to Disneyland faded over the years, and the fact that most of the park goers chose to travel on the Disneyland-inspired MTR Disneyland Resort Line, the two bus companies switched to single-decker buses in the future, with Volvo B6LE (13XX) and MAN NL262 (15XX) being deployed by Citybus, while LWB deployed its own Dennis Lance (9XX), which were retired and replaced by regular Dennis Trident (1XX-2XX) double-decker buses. The Volvo B9TL (401/MX9771) was deployed between 2011 and 2013, and was eventually replaced by Enviro500 (84XX, 85XX, the former to be re-deployed in August 2021 for all routes). Subsequently, LWB reassigned the 12.8-metre semi-luxury Enviro500 MMC (25XX) on this route in March 2020 to accommodate e-payment.

For Citybus, the semi-luxury Dennis Trident (22XX) and single-decker MAN NL262 (15XX) had been retired at an advanced age and replaced by the regular Enviro500 MMC 12/12.8 metres (85XX/65XX), which is newly ordered with a luggage rack.

Related Incidents[]

  • 2 September 2018: At around 7:00 a.m., an LWB Volvo B9TL (704/MZ3418) was travelling on the Lantau Link (Tsing Ma Bridge) towards Kowloon when the rear engine suddenly smoked and caught fire. There were no passengers on board and no one was injured in the fire. [14]
  • 24 June 2019: During the Citybus operating hours between 22:00 and 00:05, a bus captain was absent from duty due to illness, but the Tung Chung Depot and Citybus Control Centre unknowingly failed to send a reserve captain to cover for him, resulting in no trips, including the last bus, being operated during that period, and stranding about 30 passengers.
