The Discovery Bay External Resident Bus Route DB08R is operated by Discovery Bay Transit Services Limited (DBTSL) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 6185A). It runs between Discovery Bay (28 Coastline Villa) and Central Pier 3.

Due to the drop in demand for overnight ferry services as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic, DBTSL introduced the overnight bus route DB08R to temporarily replace the overnight ferry service, which was initially a temporary service and was later converted into a regular service due to the long-term loss of the overnight ferry service in order to save operating costs.

This is the only DBTSL route in history travelling to and from places other than Lantau Island and has the highest single-trip fare among all resident bus routes in Hong Kong.

This route is the first Resident Bus Route to be covered by the Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities.

History[]

In view of the low patronage of the ferry service between Discovery Bay and Central during the overnight period, DBTSL proposes to introduce an overnight bus route DB08R, modelled on the overnight bus service by Park Island Transport (PITCL) (i.e. Route NR338), between Peninsula Village (Coastline Villa) and Central Pier 3 via DB Plaza, Discovery Bay Road and DB North Plaza in the area, and stopping at the Toll Plaza BBI and Macau Ferry in other areas to replace the overnight ferry service and provide no-interchange direct service to Central along Discovery Bay Road and in the vicinity of Discovery Bay North.[2][3]

However, the above plan was met with repeated objections from Discovery Bay residents[4], resulting in a prolonged delay in the commencement of the service. When the outbreak of new coronavirus pneumonia caused a significant drop in the demand for overnight ferry services, DBTSL wrote to the Transport Department (TD) to apply for temporary modification of the ferry services and replacement of the overnight services by buses in order to save costs.

The application was eventually approved by the TD on 29 July 2020 in the form of a temporary route with Discovery Bay starting from DB Plaza, not passing through Peninsula Village and omitting Lantau Link Toll Plaza stop.

Route change history[]

  • 10 September 2020: Due to emergency repair of ferry vessel, two temporary additional morning special departures from DB Plaza to Central Pier 3 were introduced, departing at 07:50 and 08:05 respectively on Mondays to Fridays. [6]
