The Discovery Bay External Residents' Bus Route DB02R is operated by Discovery Bay Transit Services Limited (DBTSL) (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 6185A). It runs between DB Plaza and Hong Kong International Airport (Terminal 2).
It is the only Discovery Bay External Bus Route to provide daily 24-hour service, which additionally observes Auberge Discovery Bay Hong Kong and Tung Chung during overnight hours, providing convenience to not only visitors staying at Auberge Discovery Bay Hong Kong which head straight to the Airport but also for interchanging to overnight bus routes at Tung Chung towards urban.
This route, together with Route DB01R, are the first two land transportation routes to be commenced by DBTSL, breaking the previous reliance on ferries in Discovery Bay.
History[]
- 27 May 2000: Following the commissioning of the Discovery Bay Tunnel, Route DB02R commenced service, running circular between Discovery Bay Pier and Airport. The Airport terminus at that time was located outside Car Park One on Cheong Tat Road.[1]
- 11 October 2002: Upgraded to 24-hour daily service, with additional detours via Tung Chung Station during overnight hours (02:00 - 05:00).[2]
- 1 September 2008: Detoured via Chianti Public Transport Interchange which opened on the same day on Tung Chung bound.[3]
- 9 September 2012: Starting from 12am, the Airport pick-up and drop-off point was relocated to Bay 28 at Terminal 2 Coach Station and circular operation was cancelled.[4]
- 18 March 2015: The first bus time for late night trips was advanced to 01:00 with the relevant time periods detouring additionally via Auberge Discovery Bay Hong Kong.
- 20 April 2015: The "Tung Chung Station" stop served by overnight trips was relocated to Tung Chung Temporary Bus Terminus from 1:35am onwards to facilitate the the resumption of the Tat Tung Road Public Transport Terminus for the Citygate Extension project.[5]
- 25 February 2017: Terminus was relocated from Discovery Bay Pier to Discovery Bay Temporary Bus Terminus due to the former's closure for reconstruction project.
- 17 April 2018: Late-night services were extended to Discovery Bay Marina Drive with an additional stop at "No. 2, La Costa".[6]
- 19 February 2019: Due to the expansion works at the Airport Terminal 2, the Airport terminus was relocated to Bay 18 at the newly-built Coach Station, Carpark 1 and replaced the "Hong Kong International Airport (Departures Level)" stop on Cheong Hong Road from the time period with 1-hour frequency intervals onwards.[7]
- The changes were originally scheduled to be implemented on 1 December 2018 and had been delayed due to delays in the extension works.[8]
- 14 April 2019: Both directions no longer stopped at "No. 2, La Costa" stop on Discovery Bay Road, and was changed to stop at newly-completed DB Plaza Bus Terminus for DB direction and "No. 22, La Costa" stop on Discovery Bay Road for Airport direction for overnight trips.[9]
- 15 September 2019: From 5:30am, the terminus of daytime trips was relocated to DB Plaza Bus Terminus, with the alighting stop at Discovery Bay Temporary Bus Terminus (opposite) cancelled for DB direction.[10]
- 23 February 2020: No longer stopped at Discovery Bay Temporary Bus Terminus.[11]
- 19 April 2020: Overnight trips resumed stopping at Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus and no longer served Tung Chung Tat Tung Road Bus Terminus.[12]
- 30 April 2020: Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, daytime services were temporarily merged with Route DB02A.[13]
- Airport direction: Changed to turn right into Siena Avenue towards DB North Plaza after stopping at "DB International School" stop and then follow the routing of Route DB02A to Airport.
- Discovery Bay direction: Changed to follow the routing of Route DB03P towards DB North Plaza after passing Discovery Bay Tunnel, then return to original routing via Siena Avenue, with an additional stop at Auberge Discovery Bay Hong Kong;
- All trips were changed to terminate at DB Plaza and omitted Marina Drive.
- 10 August 2020: Service hour was drastically reduced due to novel coronavirus pandemic:[14]
- The service hour from Discovery Bay was changed to 05:00 - 19:00, with the first bus detouring via Tung Chung Station;
- The service hour from Airport was changed to 05:30 - 19:45, with the first bus detouring via Tung Chung Station and the departure time of special trip detouring via Cathay City changed to 17:45.
- 31 May 2021: Departures from Discovery Bay at 07:30 and 08:00 on Mondays to Fridays, as well as from Airport at 08:15 and 09:15 on Mondays to Fridays were added temporarily.[15]
- 17 October 2022: Overnight service was resumed:[16]
- The last bus time from Discovery Bay was delayed to 03:00, with services on or after 00:00 detoured via Tung Chung Station;
- The last bus time from Airport was delayed to 03:30, with services on or after 00:30 detoured via Tung Chung Station.
- 1 February 2024: Departures from DB Plaza at 09:00, 10:00, 18:00 and 19:00 daily were detoured via HZMB Hong Kong Port.[17] Transport Department assigned the number DB02RP to the relevant departures, but the operator did not split the number.
- 14 July 2024: The following changes were made to facilitate with the resumption of service of Route DB02A:[18]
- Changed to detour via DB North only for trips from DB Plaza at 10:00 - 16:00 and from Hong Kong International Airport (New Coach Station) at 10:45 - 16:45;
- Only departure at 10:00 detoured via HZMB Hong Kong Port;
- First bus time of overnight trips detouring via Tung Chung was advanced to 00:00.
- 23 September 2025: The Airport terminus was relocated back from Coach Station, Carpark 1 to Coach Station, Terminal 2, with an additional alighting only stop at Terminal 1 (Departures Level).[19]

- Buses will stop for a while after arriving at Hong Kong International Airport (New Coach Station). Passengers boarding at Cathay City towards DB Plaza can wait patiently on the bus.
- Passengers with bicycles can only board/alight at Chianti Interchange (Airport direction), Siena Two (Joyful Mansion) (DB Plaza direction) and Discovery Bay Tunnel Toll Plaza.

Bus deployments[]
This route is operated by four buses during the daytime, with one bus being deployed to DB02A every two hours, so three buses are actually used. One Daewoo BH117L, one MAN RR2, two Scania K280IB and two Volvo B7R are the main vehicles used; medium buses (DBAY75/DBAY77/DBAY156/DBAY173) are mainly deployed during the overnight hours. When necessary (e.g. when four or more coaches are required to stay at the depot and Gale Signal No. 8 or Storm Signal is in force), single-decker buses with the route endorsement in the Passenger Service Licence may be dispatched.

Traffic accidents[]
- 19 June 2001: In the morning, a MAN A53 (HKR137/JM6146) travelling towards Discovery Bay Pier was hit head-on by a Dennis Trident (187/HT7230) travelling on LWB Route E32 at the Cheong Tat Road roundabout, and then the rear of the vehicle crashed into an LWB Dennis Lance on Airport Shuttle Bus Route S1. The accident resulted in 12 injuries, with the captains of the E32 and this route in serious condition.[21][22]
Fire accidents[]
- 23 September 2005: A MAN 13.220 (HKR136/JL7191) was accidentally burnt while travelling on this route and was subsequently retired early.
Other incidents[]
- 23 October 2015: In the evening, a vessel crashed into the Kap Shui Mun Bridge and the management company of Tsing Ma Bridge decided to close the Lantau Link for two hours for inspection. Road traffic and railway services in the urban area to and from Lantau Island were disrupted for a while, and the Transport Department (TD) appealed to passengers to go to Central Ferry Piers to take ferries to Discovery Bay, and then change to this route to the Hong Kong International Airport. In response to passenger demand, DBTSL temporarily deployed additional Volvo B9TL double-decker buses to serve this route.
