The main article of this section is the launching process of Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus.

The proposal to introduce open-top bus routes on Hong Kong Island was mentioned in the 2009-2010 Bus Route Development Programme and subsequently supported by the District Council. The NWFB held a launching ceremony on 17 October 2009 at Central Ferry Piers Bus Terminus[1] and invited members of the Hong Kong Transport Society and Bus Fan World to have a priority tour.[2]

The following day, Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus Routes H1 and H2 commenced service[3]. Route H1, with its terminus at Central (Star Ferry) (outside Pier 6) and Pokfield Road, was positioned as a "Heritage Tour" as it passes by many monuments on Hong Kong Island and markers of old Hong Kong; and was renamed as "Heritage Route" in December 2009 at the request of the Tourism Commission.[4]

Route change history[]

  • 29 January 2011: NWFB rationalised its Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus services:[5]
    • No longer observed the section of Pok Fu Lam Road southbound between Bonham Road and Pokfield Road as well as Pokfield Road Bus Terminus, and the stops at "Pokfield Road" and "Chiu Sheung School Hong Kong" were cancelled;
    • The Mid-levels terminus was relocated to HKU East Gate and changed to go downhill by directly turning right from Bonham Road to Pok Fu Lam Road;
    • Bus stops at "Ladder Street" and "Sutherland Street" were cancelled and new stops at "Queen Street", "Seymour Road" and "Eastern Street" were added;

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of Cross-Harbour Bus Route H1

NWFB converted 5 Volvo Olympian 11m buses (VA51-55) into double-decker full open-top bus during the initial commencement of Route H1 for services on the route as well as Route H2.

Later, NWFB converted 5 Euro III Dennis Trident 12m buses (1215-1219) double-decker air-conditioned buses into semi-open-top buses with air-conditioned compartment retained on the lower deck to replace Volvo Olympians (VA51-55) (some transferred to Citybus non-franchised fleet). 1215 entered service on 16 May 2015.[39]

All Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus routes suspended service from 17 February 2020 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. During this period, the original Dennis Trident 12m buses (1215-1219) reached the 18-year age limit one by one, so the route was replaced by three Enviro500 12m (5550-5552) semi-open-top buses when the route resumed service in October.

In 2024, Citybus expanded its fleet of open-top buses by converting nine Enviro500 MMC 12m buses (8352-8360, renumbered as 59903-59911 after conversion) into semi-open-top buses, which were added to the route from April to October and became the main model on this route.
