The Cross-Harbour Bus Route 973 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Stanley Market [Remark 1] and Tsim Sha Tsui (Mody Road), via Ma Hang, Chung Hom Kok, Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen, Pok Fu Lam, HKU, Sai Ying Pun and Jordan.

Route 973 is the only cross-harbour bus route in Repulse Bay and the Stanley area. It has more than 100 stops in both directions and is currently the bus route with the third-largest number of stops in Hong Kong; this route was also once the franchised bus route with the largest number since its inception until Route 982X was launched on 27 August 2012.

History[]

In 1997, the Stanley Chamber of Commerce and then Executive Council member, Selina Chow, fought hard to create this route, as there was no public transport service between Stanley and Repulse Bay, and residents had to change buses to travel between the two places.[1]

  • 26 January 1998: Route 973 entered service between Stanley and Tsim Sha Tsui East, with service time up to 19:30 and a frequency of every 30 minutes, and most of the trips detoured via Ocean Park Road Bus Terminus for the whole day.[2][3]
  • 4 July 1998: Changed to detour via Ocean Park Bus Terminus only during Saturday afternoon and for some trips during holidays. [4]
  • 30 August 1998: Payment by Octopus accepted on the whole route. [5]
  • 28 February 2000: Rerouted via Chung Hom Kok and Ma Hang and omitting Stanley Gap Road Interchange from 3pm onwards to facilitate the opening of Carmel Road extension:[6]
    • Stanley direction: After arriving at "Headland Road" stop on Repulse Bay Road, the route was rerouted to turn right into Chung Hom Kok Road and then turn right into Cape Road, Carmel Road extension and Carmel Road after stopping at "Chung Hom Kok Beach" stop, then return to original routing at Stanley Village Road;
    • After departing from Stanley Village Bus Terminus, the route was rerouted via the extended part of Carmel Road, Carmel Road, Cape Road and Chung Hom Kok Road, then return to original routing at Repulse Bay Road.
  • 20 June 2000: Interchange concessions with Routes 930, 962 and 969 series towards Hong Kong Island direction were introduced, making it the first Octopus interchange concession scheme by Citybus. [7]
  • 7 August 2000: Service hour was extended to 22:00 on a trial basis until 2 October when it was changed to a permanent measure.
  • 9 December 2001: The following changes were made for Stanley direction: [8][9]
    • Rerouted via Western Street towards Queen's Road West, omitting Eastern Street;
    • A new stop was added at "Centre Street" stop on Connaught Road West, replacing the original stop at "Centre Street" on Queen's Road West;
    • The section fare after Western Harbour Crossing was reduced from $8.8 to $5.8, which was the same as the original section fare starting at "Queen Mary Hospital" stop.
  • January 2002: Detoured via Chung Hom Kok Beach for Tsim Sha Tsui direction:
    • After arriving at "Cape Drive" stop on Cape Road, the route was detoured by turning left via intermediate stops at "72 Chung Hom Kok Road" southbound, "Chung Hom Kok Beach" and "72 Chung Hom Kok Road" northbound, then return to original routing at "Chung Hom Kok Fire Station" stop.
  • Early 2002[Source Request]: Changed to go directly to Stanley Village Bus Terminus instead of going through Tung Tau Wan Road[Remark 2] after arriving at "Cape Drive" stop on Cape Road; and changed to detour via Tung Tau Wan Road first after departing from Stanley Village Bus Terminus then return to Ma Hang Estate.
  • 15 August 2005: Octopus interchange concession with Route R11 was introduced.[10]
  • 1 July 2006: Interchange concessions for other Western Harbour Crossing routes towards Hong Kong Island were introduced. [11][12]
  • 28 May 2007: Rerouted via Kowloon Park Drive to Salisbury Road after "Lai Chack Middle School" stop on Canton Road, with new stops at "China Hong Kong City" and "Peking Road" on Kowloon Park Drive, and no longer ran through the section of Canton Road opposite Harbour City.[13]
  • 2 August 2009: Towards Stanley Market, after exiting Tsim Sha Tsui (East) Bus Terminus, the route turned right to Science Museum Road, Cheong Wan Road and Chatham Road South, and then returned to the original routing, no longer passing through Mody Road:[14]
    • Additional intermediate stops were added at Chatham Road South near Hong Kong Science Museum and Mody Road, and the stop at "Urban Council Centenary Garden" on Mody Road was cancelled.
  • 26 June 2010: The following changes were made:[15]
    • Rerouted for Stanley direction via a section of Aberdeen Main Road in Aberdeen Town Centre, stopping at "St. Peter's Secondary School" and "Yue Fai Road", bypassing Aberdeen Bus Terminus;

  • 27 July 2011: The Tsim Sha Tsui terminus was relocated to Mody Road, the former site of the "Centenary Park" bus stop which was canceled in 2009, to free up the Tsim Sha Tsui (East) Bus Terminus lay-by For NWFB Route 796X:[16]

Please refer to the relevant entries on each route for details.
  • Passengers on Routes 976 and 976A must interchange at the Western Harbour Crossing BBI. Passengers who interchange at Tai Lam Tunnel Toll Plaza cannot enjoy the interchange concessions.
  • These interchange concessions can be used in conjunction with the interchange concession schemes for Hong Kong Island Routes, Tuen Mun Road Routes and Tai Lam Tunnel Routes.
  • The discount for children under 12 years old is calculated at half the rate; for passengers who benefit from the Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities, if the second journey fare is the above second journey discount fare (for example, those aged 65 or above, qualified persons with disabilities, or passengers under 12 years old, the concession in halved) or $2.0, whichever is lower. Therefore, some interchanges may not have interchange concessions. Official website:

Ridership[]

Apart from being the only cross-harbour route between Repulse Bay and Stanley, the meandering Route 973 is also the only route between these two places and Sai Ying Pun. During the swimming season holidays, the number of passengers on this route between Deep Water Bay and Stanley increases compared to normal days, and Citybus has arranged extra buses from Ocean Park to Kowloon to avoid passengers from Wong Chuk Hang and Aberdeen being unable to board the bus.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2006: The average daily patronage of the section of Tung Tau Wan Road leading to Stanley Prison is about 40, representing 1% of the total patronage.
  • 2007: The passenger utilisation rate was 63% and the average occupancy rate during off-peak hours was 20%.
  • 2009: The maximum utilisation rate was 67%; after 9 p.m. there were only about 120 passengers, which was less than 19% of the maximum load factor.
  • 2014: The average occupancy rate was 69% during peak hours and 46% during off-peak hours.[37]
  • 2015: The average occupancy rate of the busiest half-hour before the commissioning of the MTR Island Line Extension to Western District was 100%, compared to 64% after the opening of the line in January, recording a drop in patronage.[38]However, 77% was recorded in March, indicating a rebound in patronage.[39]
  • 2017: The average occupancy rate at the highest loading point during the busiest half-hour of the peak period was 100% before the opening of the SIL and 65.6% after the opening, representing a drop of 11.1% in patronage compared with the pre-opening period.[40]
  • 2020: The occupancy rates for the Stanley direction and Tsim Sha Tsui direction were 42% and 58% respectively during the peakiest hour, 17-28% and 9-38% respectively during non-peak hours, and 17-24% and 9-20% respectively after 7pm.[41][42]
  • 2021: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 53%, while the average occupancy rate for the whole day was only 24%. After the afternoon peak, the occupancy rate was only 12-20%, and there were about 70 passengers after 9:00 p.m. Passengers embarking and disembarking from Tung Tau Wan Road and Stanley Prison accounted for 80 passengers, which only accounted for 2% of the total number of passengers for the whole day.
  • 2023: The occupancy rate during the busiest hour was 53%.

Related incidents[]

  • 1 December 2004: A Volvo Olympian (9XX) heading for Tsim Sha Tsui East crashed into an ice truck on the opposite lane at the junction of Pok Fu Lam Road and Hill Road due to unclear traffic signals and road surface design, injuring two drivers and a baby boy.[43]
  • 8 January 2005: At 6:00 p.m., a lady, together with her aunt who suffered from Parkinson's disease and needed a wheelchair for mobility, tried to fold her wheelchair outside the entrance of the New World Centre and to help her board a non-low-floor bus to Aberdeen, but the bus driver refused to do so. The lady considered the bus driver's action unreasonable, pointing out that when they were travelling from Aberdeen to Tsim Sha Tsui, there was no wheelchair space on the bus, but the bus driver still allowed her to put the folded wheelchair inside the bus, so she insisted on boarding the bus, and the bus driver made concessions after 10 minutes of hassle. The victim was very dissatisfied and wrote to the newspaper afterwards complaining about the driver's discrimination. At that time, no wheelchair parking area was provided on all buses of this route.[44]
  • 16 December 2014: At around 11:00 a.m., a Tsim Sha Tsui bound Enviro400 (7007/PZ8490) hit a worker who was working at the nearby Express Rail Link construction site and was about to go out for lunch at the time of the incident at Wui Man Road and was sent to hospital with serious injuries.[45]
  • 7 February 2015: Two Enviro400s collided with a private car while travelling; no injuries were sustained in either accident:
    • On that day (time unknown), 7054 (RY8291) heading towards Stanley was involved in an accident while turning left from Connaught Road West toWestern Street;[46]
    • In the afternoon, 7039 (RE1385) towards Tsim Sha Tsui was involved in an accident at Wong Chuk Hang Road near Zung Fu garage due to a suspected lane dispute.[47]

Remarks[]

  1. Displayed as "Stanley Village" (赤柱村) on the Motion Bus Stop Display List.
  2. In practice, both directions were detoured via Tung Tau Wan Road, and for a period of time thereafter, it was strictly enforced that after Stanley Plaza, one had to drive directly into Stanley Village; it was not until June 2010 that the arrangement of detouring via Tung Tau Wan Road for Stanley direction was normalised again.
