The Cross-Harbour Bus Route 970X is operated solely by Citybus. It runs between Aberdeen and Cheung Sha Wan (Kom Tsun Street), passing through Tin Wan, Chi Fu Fa Yuen, Pok Fu Lam and HKU on Hong Kong Island, and Jordan, Yau Ma Tei, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po in Kowloon.

According to the Schedule of Routes Order, Route 970X is an express version of Route 970, except covering Chi Fu Road, Tin Wan and Aberdeen Town Centre, it also serves the Cheung Sha Wan Business District, which is not served by the main route; and the routing between Pok Fu Lam Village and Sham Shui Po is similar to the main route; the route passes through Hill Road Flyover instead of Sai Ying Pun for Cheung Sha Wan direction, and it is faster than the main route to reach Western Harbour Crossing to Kowloon.

Free second trips are not available when transferring at the Western Harbour Crossing; some Citybus interchange concessions are exclusively operated . There are also interchange concessions on Hong Kong Island between some of these routes, and the amount may be different from the Western Harbour Crossing interchanges. Please refer to the relevant entries on each route for details.
  • Passengers on Routes 976 and 976A must interchange at the Western Harbour Crossing BBI. Passengers who interchange at Tai Lam Tunnel Toll Plaza cannot enjoy the interchange concessions.
  • These interchange concessions can be used in conjunction with the interchange concession schemes for Hong Kong Island Routes, Tuen Mun Road Routes and Tai Lam Tunnel Routes.

Ridership[]

Route 970X and its main route 970 are the main routes between Pok Fu Lam and the University of Hong Kong to and from Kowloon, but the level of service has not been able to meet the demand, and has often been criticised by passengers for insufficient frequency[18] In the second quarter of 2012, this route, together with Route 970, received the highest number of complaints about lost trips in the territory.[19]

According to the Bus Route Planning Programme and other documents, the ridership of this route are as follows:

  • 2008: The passenger utilisation rate was 94%, with only about 10 passengers boarding the special departure from Tin Wan Estate to So Uk at Tin Wan in the afternoon.
  • 2014: The occupancy rate during the busiest hour was 90%.[20]
  • 2015: The average occupancy rate of the busiest half-hour before the opening of the MTR Island Line Extension to Western District was 95%, and 63% after the opening, recording a 32% drop in patronage;[21] 79% was recorded in March, indicating an increase in patronage.[22]
  • 2016: The highest occupancy rates during the morning peak period were 84% (from Aberdeen) and 88% (from So Uk Estate); the highest occupancy rates during the afternoon peak period were 88% (from Aberdeen) and 72% (from So Uk Estate); and the highest occupancy rates of special trips from Tin Wan Estate were 63% (for morning trips) and 83% (for afternoon trips).
  • 2020: The occupancy rate during the busiest hour was 89%.[23]

Last day of NWFB Operations[]

Many bus fans take photo for NWFB 970X line operated by New World First Bus at Aberdeen Terminus Last bus

With the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger, the NWFB branding would become history after 1 July 2023. Citybus issued a press release on 26 June that the final bus of NWFB’s regular daytime route would be the 01:30 departure of this route from Cheung Sha Wan (Kom Tsun Street) and it is notified that no more than 4 buses will be dispatched to run this departure. The arrangement attracted many bus fans and citizens to bid farewell. Some even arrived 21 hours before the last bus left to wait. Due to the large number of people waiting, NWFB staff stopped the queue at 11:30pm that night and no longer allowed other people to wait in line.

On that day, NWFB dispatched all 4 buses with the "Farewell to NWFB" (光榮告別新巴) retro wave livery on the departure, and also dispatched 2 Volvo B9TL buses covered with the "25 Years of Loyal Service to Hong Kong, Farewell NWFB!" (新巴廿五,光榮告別) banner advertising, and one Enviro500 MMC bus (5583/TC9853) covered with the "Everything starts with CITYBUS" banner as a standby bus. Due to the large number of crowds, it was eventually delayed until around 2am when the five final buses (4 buses with retro wave livery and 5583/TC9853) slowly drove out to the music of "Auld Lang Syne" and eventually arrived at Aberdeen Bus Terminus at around 3am. As the five buses ran that service left the terminus and returned to the depot, all regular daytime routes of NWFB officially became history and were taken over by Citybus.
