The Cross-Harbour Bus Route 968 is solely operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Yuen Long (West) and Causeway Bay (Tin Hau), via Yuen Long Main Road, Route 3, Sheung Wan, Central, Admiralty and Wan Chai.

Route 968 is currently the only whole-day route travelling between Yuen Long Town and Hong Kong Island with a high patronage, and a newspaper even reported in 2015 that this route is the most profitable bus route of KMB in Yuen Long.[1]

History[]

Commencing background[]

Originally, this route was to be introduced only after the commissioning of the Tai Lam Tunnel, but since the commencement of the operation of Route 960, buses on that route have always been full while crossing the harbour at all times. As a result, the Transport Department (TD) had to bring forward the commencement of this route, as well as Routes 961 and 969, five months after the commissioning of the Western Harbour Crossing (October of the same year), so as to alleviate the huge cross-harbour passenger volume of Route 960. As the Tai Lam Tunnel and the Ting Kau Bridge were still under construction at the time of the commencement of the service, the route between Yuen Long and Hong Kong Island, after the Pok Oi Interchange, travelled on the southern section of Yuen Long Highway, Tuen Mun Road, Tsuen Wan Road and Kwai Chung Road, and then took Route 3 and the Western Harbour Crossing to reach the Hong Kong Island.

Route change history[]

  • 19 October 1997: Route 968 was put into service, running between Yuen Long (West) and Causeway Bay (Tin Hau).[2]
  • 26 May 1998: In response to the opening of Tai Lam Tunnel, the service was diverted to run via the Tunnel and Ting Kau Bridge, i.e. via the whole section of Route 3:[3][4]
    • At the same time, the service hours were extended, with the last bus from Yuen Long (West) postponed from 23:10 to 23:30 and the first bus from Causeway Bay advancced from 07:00 to 06:40;
    • Initially, the proposed fare was $21.4, but Citybus decided to reduce the full fare of Route 969 from $21.4 to $20.7 on the opening day of Tai Lam Tunnel, which was also diverted to run via the tunnel, and the fare of this route was reduced accordingly.
  • 10 October 1999: No longer stopped at the intermediate stop outside City Hall on Connaught Road Central for Causeway Bay direction. [5]
  • 17 October 1999: No longer stopped at "Hong Lok Road" stop for Yuen Long. direction.[6]
  • 20 November 2000: Diverted via Morrison Street in lieu of Hillier Streetfrom Des Voeux Road Central to Connaught Road Central for Yuen Long (West) direction.

  • 23 December 2001: To tie in with the first-ever "Sheung Wan Holiday Pedestrian-only Zone" (「上環假日行人坊」), the section of Morrison Street off Western Market were closed during designated hours on Sundays and holidays when the event is held:
    • On Sundays and holidays from Sham Shui Po direction, the route would resume via Hillier Street instead of Morrison Street;[7]
    • Thereafter, the annual Sheung Wan Holiday Pedestrian-only Zone was moved to the section of Morrison Street and Wing Lok Street south of Des Voeux Road Central, the section of Morrison Street north of Des Voeux Road Central did not need to be closed and the route did not need to be diverted on holidays.
  • 29 March 2002: Interchange concessions at Tai Lam Tunnel Interchange were introduced to replace the Interchange Coupons with Octopus card for interchanging to other routes.[8]
    • The transitional period ended on 10 April, when Octopus interchange fully replaced the interchange coupons.

  • May 2010: A one-way special departure from Hennessy Road near Fleming Road to Yuen Long (West) was added on weekday afternoons at 17:30, 18:15 and 19:00.[12]
  • 19 January 2013: In response to the addition of Tai Lam Tunnel as an intermediate stop of Route 373A, the Octopus interchange concession with this route was enhanced to free of charge. [13]

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of Cross-Harbour Bus Route 968

In the early years of the service of Route 968, Volvo Olympian 11m and 12m (AV/3AV) as well as Dennis Dragon12m (3AD) were used. In the 21st century, the Dennis Trident12m (ATR) was added to provide low-floor service, which was later replaced by the Volvo Super Olympian12m (3ASV).

In 2003, Enviro500 12m (ATE, now withdrawn, and ATEU in 2009, now withdrawn) straight-staircase buses were added to this route, while Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBE, now withdrawn) buses of the same model were added to this route since 2007. In 2012, the same type of bus (AVBWU) with Euro V engine and Wright body was added to this route, and in 2013, KMB retrofitted CCTV on this type of bus and the whole route was operated by this type of bus. Subsequently, to tie in with the service reduction of Route 268B, three Volvo Super Olympian 12m buses (3ASV, now withdrawn) were added to the service. The Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) was introduced in large numbers from 28 September of the same year, and the entire route was served entirely by straight-staircase buses in 2014. 31 October 2015 saw the replacement of the running order (968-S01) of the original Volvo B9TL (AVBWU279/RJ8257) with the Neoman A34 12m (APM1/LE4612), which was the reserved spare bus for this route. However, less than 10 days later, it was withdrawn from the route because its engine emission level[Remark 1] did not meet the minimum requirement for entry into the Low Emission Zone (LEZ), and the original running order was replaced by an Enviro500 MMC (ATENU777/TT9613).

In May 2016, a 12.8m Enviro500 MMC (3ATENU37/TY2057) from Lai Chi Kok Depot (L), formerly a scheduled bus of Route 279X, was added to this route, making it the fifth KMB route to introduce a 12.8-metre bus after Routes 73X, B1, 263 and 279X, and the first KMB solely-operated cross-harbour route to use this bus model, which has so far accounted for more than half of the fleet of this route.

On 19 May 2017, Hong Kong's first pure diesel-driven Volvo B8L 12m (AVBWL1/UU8290), which is mid-axle-driven and meets the Euro VI emission standard, made its maiden trip[37] on this route as a running order of the maintenance department (968-N01), and went on to serve this route and became the scheduled bus (968-08) on 25 May, with a Volvo B9TL (AVBWU406/TJ652) joining on the same day for a parallel test to evaluate its performance, and was transferred to Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) to operate Route 6C one month after the test.

The newly-registered Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (3ATENU) buses with Heartbeat of The City livery were added from July 2018 onwards, with some of the original 12.8m gold-bodied counterparts being redeployed to routes 68A, 263, 268C and 269C.

The newly-registered Euro 6 glass ladder Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (E6X) were added gradually from September 2019, with some of the original 12.8m red bodied homologated models transferred to Routes 259D and 268C, rejoining the model until May 2023, until it was withdrawn again six months later.

In 2022, Volvo B8L 12m (V6B) and 12.8m (V6X) joined this route (the former in January and the latter in August until withdrawn in March and November of the following year).

Ridership[]

This route has an exclusive share of passengers travelling between Yuen Long Town and Hong Kong Island. Moreover, Route 3, which has a smoother traffic flow, is more convenient and time-saving than the railways which require multiple interchanges, therefore, the frequency is as high as three minutes during the morning peak hours, and additional intermediate pick-up frequency is also required during the afternoon peak hours for Yuen Long direction, thus demonstrating the high patronage.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programme and District Council documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2012: The average daily patronage was 17,300.
  • 2014: The average occupancy rate was 77% during the peakiest hour and 66% during the off-peak period; the average occupancy rate of special trips from Yuen Long Park was about 73%. [36]
  • 2017: The average occupancy rate was 75% per trip. [37]
  • 2019: The maximum average occupancy rate was 90% during the busiest hour. [38]
  • 2020: The occupancy rate was about 80% during the morning peak hour of the special trips from Yuen Long Park towards the urban area. [39]
  • 2021: According to the field survey conducted on 22 January at Sereno Verde, Shap Pat Heung Road, the highest occupancy rate of the special trips from Yuen Long Park during the morning peak hour was about 85%. [40]

The inspector immediately disclosed his identity and called the police, who arrived at the scene and arrested the bus captain.[55]
