The Cross-Harbour Bus Route 948E is jointly operated by Kowloon Motor Bus and Citybus. It runs between Tsing Yi Station and Tai Koo (Kornhill Plaza); after serving Cheung Wang Estate, Tsing Yi Estate, Cheung Hong Estate, Cheung Tsing Estate, it takes the Tsing Kwai Highway, the Western Harbour Crossing, and the Central - Wan Chai Bypass to run to and from North Point and Quarry Bay. It is a special departure of Route 948 and only operates on Monday to Friday during morning peak hours to Tai Koo and during afternoon peak hours to Tsing Yi.
Route 948E is the first bus route that runs through the entirety of the Central - Wan Chai Bypass for both directions, and is one of the three WHC routes that do not stop at Western Harbour Crossing Bus-Bus Interchange for Hong Kong Island direction. [Remark 1]
History[]
Opening Background[]
Before the establishment of this route, bus services between Tsing Yi and Hong Kong Island were provided by Route 948 and its special departures (948A, 948B, 948P and 948X), but they only served areas such as Central, Sheung Wan, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay, and failed to cover Hong Kong Island East.
As early as 2018, district councillors and locals suggested that a new branch route be added to route 948 between Tsing Yi and Hong Kong Island East to facilitate residents to travel between the two places. After the Central-Wan Chai Bypass was opened to traffic in 2019, some people in Tsing Yi rented buses to try running from Tsing Yi to Hong Kong Island East, hoping that the bus company could add the relevant branch line.
After much debate among different political parties, the Transport Department finally proposed in the 2020-2021 Bus Route Planning Programme proposals to operate a bus service from Tsing Yi to Hong Kong Island East, numbered 948E, with two trips departing from Tsing Yi and Tai Koo during the morning and evening rush hours from Monday to Friday.
History of Route Changes[]
- 28 December 2020: 948E entered service.[1][2][3]
- 3 May 2021: An additional stop was added at Western Harbour Crossing Toll Plaza with a new section fare starting there.[4][5][6]
- 6 September 2021: The morning outbound service was increased to four trips, departing from Tsing Yi Station at 07:15, 07:24, 07:32 and 07:45 Monday to Friday.[7][8][9]
- 1 July 2023: Changed to be operated jointly by Citybus and KMB following the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger.
- 18 September 2023: The number of return trips in the afternoon was increased to four, with departure times at 17:50, 18:05, 18:20 and 18:35.[10][11]

- 30 October 2024: At 7 am in the morning, a Citybus Enviro500 MMC (61158/UU7291) heading towards Tai Koo (Kornhill Plaza) was departing Hong Fu House Cheung Hong Estate and collided with a vehicle with 7 people.[17]
