Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The Cross-Harbour Bus Route 934 is operated solely by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Tsuen Wan (Bayview Garden) and Wan Chai (Fleming Road); after serving Chai Wan Kok, it takes Tsing Kwai Highway, West Kowloon Highway and Western Harbour Crossing to and from Sheung Wan, Central and Admiralty.

The original Route 334 via the Cross-Harbour Tunnel was substantially re-routed and renumbered as "934" in May 1997 to tie in with the opening of the Western Harbour Crossing. This route was originally operated only during peak hours on weekdays, but its headways and service hours were gradually enhanced and eventually expanded to during designated hours daily.

History[]

For details of the development of the predecessor of this route, Cross-Harbour Bus Route 334, please refer to the article Cross-Harbour Bus Route 334.

  • 1 May 1997: To tie in with the opening of the Western Harbour Crossing, KMB introduced the new "Western Tunnel Express" Route 934 to replace Route 334 from Bayview Garden to Causeway Bay (Victoria Park) in one direction, with only four trips during morning peak hours. [1]
  • 16 July 1998: Return trips were introduced. [2]
  • 16 January 1999: As the section of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan outside Belvedere Garden Phase I was changed to one-way eastbound, the route was diverted via Hoi Hing Road, Hoi On Road and Lai Shun Road when heading towards Bayview Garden.
  • 25 October 1998: Rerouted via Connaught Road Central and Cotton Tree Drive instead of Rumsey Street and Des Voeux Road Central for Causeway Bay direction to reduce traffic congestion in Central. [3][4]
  • 10 October 1999: No longer stopped at the en-route stop outside City Hall on Connaught Road Central for Causeway Bay direction.[5]
  • 20 November 2000: Rerouted via Morrison Street to access the Connaught Road Central in lieu of Hillier Street for Tsuen Wan direction. [6]
  • 31 May 2002: Octopus interchange concessions with other whole-day KMB and NWFB Western Tunnel Express routes were introduced.[7]
  • 3 August 2002: Shortened to Hennessy Road near Fleming Road, and a free Octopus Interchange concession with Route 968 was provided for the convenience of original Causeway Bay-bound passengers. [8]
  • 1 July 2006: Interchange concessions with other Western Harbour Crossing routes for Hong Kong Island direction were extended to more routes. [8]
  • 16 January 2012: Morning headways were adjusted. [9]
  • 22 April 2014: Morning frequency was increased to 5-9 minutes on Mondays to Fridays, while afternoon trips were increased to three, with departure times changed to 17:45, 18:05 and 18:25.[10]
  • 21 March 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) Enquiry System was introduced on this route. [11]

Ridership[]

According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2012: The average daily patronage was about 960; since the implementation of five-day weekdays by the Government and most of the private sector, Saturday patronage has dropped significantly to an average of only about 33 passengers per trip, which is about 70% less than the average of about 136 passengers per trip on weekdays.
  • 2017: The hourly patronage rate was 88%.

Anecdotes[]

Some bus fans noticed in October 2018 that KMB added announcements promoting this route to its announcement system, which caused discussion[25]. Subsequently, in view of the fact that this route does not serve Causeway Bay which its competitor Route 930X did, KMB replaced it with a re-recorded soundtrack in April 2019, supplemented with free interchange concessions with Route 936, and broadcasted it on most of the routes serving Kwai Tsing and Tsuen Wan districts. [26]

Related incidents[]

  • 22 July 2015: An Enviro500 MMC (ATENU559/TL5811) collided with an Enviro500 (8234/RM7141) travelling on Route 969 at the Macau Ferry at around 8:00am. [27]
