The Cross-Harbour Bus Route 694S is operated solely by Citybus. It runs between Tiu Keng Leng Station and Siu Sai Wan Estate; after observing Tseung Kwan O Town Centre, Pak Shing Kok and LOHAS Park, it takes Tseung Lam Highway and Eastern Harbour Crossing (EHC) to and from Quarry Bay, Sai Wan Ho, Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan in Eastern District. This route, together with Route 690S, are the only two EHC routes that omit Eastern Harbour Crossing Bus-Bus Interchange.

Route 694S belongs to the special departure of Route 694, and is available during the morning and afternoon peak hours from Monday to Friday for both the outbound and return journeys respectively, and the electric destination sign towards Tiu Keng Leng alternately display the destinations as "Tiu Keng Leng Bravobus Stopreporter MTR Icon" and "LOHAS Park".

History[]

The Tseung Kwan O - Lam Tin Tunnel (TKO-Lam Tin Tunnel) was opened to traffic on 11 December 2022, with a direct access to the Eastern Harbour Crossing from the westbound tube, making it more convenient for Tseung Kwan O vehicles to cross the harbour to Hong Kong Island. However, one month before the opening of the Tseung Kwan O - Lam Tin Tunnel, the Transport Department considered that the ridership of the two cross-harbour bus routes 690 and 694 in Tseung Kwan O was not high and it was believed that the majority of people who crossed the harbour by public transport would choose the MTR, so no additional route to Hong Kong Island was not planned at that time. However the TD will consider whether to provide additional routes when the TKO-Lam Tin Tunnel is open to traffic and passengers have stabilised their travelling habits.[1]

The opening of the TKO-Lam Tin Tunnel has successfully diverted traffic from the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel. Sai Kung District Council members requested the introduction of bus routes to the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island (North Point, Taikoo Shing and Shau Kei Wan) in view of the advantages of the new route in providing direct access to the Eastern Harbour Crossing.[2] Citybus and NWFB has indicated that routes connecting LOHAS Park and Hong Kong Island have been proposed since the end of 2022.[3] However, the Transport Department cited the ridership data of routes 690, 690P and 694 to confirm that passengers in Tseung Kwan O still preferred the more convenient and lower-fare MTR trains to cross the harbour.[4] The district organisation criticised that the existing routes did not directly serve LOHAS Park and it was absurd for TD to link its ridership data to the demand for cross-harbour buses there.[5]

In view of the residents' suggestion, the Transport and Logistics Bureau and the Transport Department mentioned in the paper to be submitted to the Legislative Council in February 2023 that they would study with the bus companies to try out a special service to run through the TKO-Lam Tin Tunnel and finalise the service details in general, with a view to trying out the service in March.[6] The Transport Department also submitted a preliminary proposal to the District Council, revealing that route 694S from Tiu King Ling Station to Siu Sai Wan Estate via LOHAS Park and TaiKoo Place would be operated, with two trips from Monday to Friday at 8:00am and 8:15am tentatively.[7] After collecting views from the local community, Transport Department will issue a formal planning document with revised route departure time and additional return service.[8]

In March 2023, Sai Kung District Councillors received the results of the trial run, which showed that the journey time of the route towards Hong Kong Island would be about 71 minutes, with the last stop of the Tseung Kwan O at Wings At Sea LOHAS Park to the first stop on Hong Kong Island at Healthy Village taking about 15 minutes.[9]
