The Cross Harbour Bus Route 694 is operated solely by Citybus. It runs between Tiu Keng Leng Station and Siu Sai Wan Estate; after observing Tseung Kwan O Town Centre, Hang Hau and Po Lam, it takes Tseung Kwan O Tunnel with stops at Lam Tin (Kai Tin Road →/Lei Yue Mun Road ←), and then via the Eastern Harbour Crossing to and from Sai Wan Ho, Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan.
Route 694 does not pass through Quarry Bay and is branded as an express route to publicise that the journey time from Lam Tin to Hong Kong Island East (Sai Wan Ho) is only about 8 minutes.
History[]
In the 1998-1999 Bus Route Development Programme, the Administration proposed to introduce this route in April 1998, initially limited to three buses during the morning peak hours in one direction to Siu Sai Wan, and the number of buses would be increased to four or five in January and July of the following year to tie in with the occupation of Beverly Garden and Kwong Ming Court.
However, the proposal did not provide information on the starting point, and only stated that the route would be extended to Sheung Tak Estate to tie in with the occupation of Kwong Ming Court, and did not set out the routing within Tseung Kwan O; the proposal also failed to provide information on the starting point of the route. After leaving the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel, the route would enter the Eastern Harbour Crossing via Kai Tin Road and pass through King's Road, Kornhill Road, Shau Kei Wan Road and Chai Wan Road on Hong Kong Island, as well as detouring via Ning Fu Street and Kut Shing Street outside Chai Wan Station.

This was the first cross-harbour route to be operated by New World First Bus (NWFB) after it succeeded China Motor Bus (CMB) in obtaining a franchise for 88 routes on Hong Kong Island. [1]

Bus Deployment Evolution History[]
Bus Deployment Evolution History of Cross-Harbour Bus Route 694 |
---|
This route was initially operated by Dennis Trident 12M (30XX) with Duple Metsec body, and was changed to Volvo Super Olympian 12m (50XX) when it came into service. This route was also the first Tseung Kwan O route to be served by the NWFB Neoplan Centroliner 12m (60XX). However, due to an accident involving this bus in the Eastern Harbour Crossing, the computer system of the bus locked the bus and prevented it from being towed away immediately, resulting in the withdrawal of the bus from Tseung Kwan O, and since then NWFB has banned this model from running cross-harbour routes for a long period of time and immediately switched to deploying Dennis Tridents and Volvo Super Olympians. 2007 saw the addition of two second-hand 11-metre double-decker buses, Volvo Olympian (VA) and Leyland Olympian (LA), which NWFB acquired from China Motor Bus (CMB) to run on this route, and they have become the mainstay of this fleet together with Dennis Tridents and Volvo Super Olympians. With the opening of the MTR Tseung Kwan O Line in 2002, most of the bus routes in Tseung Kwan O experienced a drop in patronage and the bus companies reduced their resources for bus routes in the area, and the route was occasionally served by Dennis Dart single-decker buses (20XX) between the late 2000s and 2010s; due to the rebound of patronage and the retirement of all Dennis Dart single-deck buses, the route resumed the use of double-decker buses at the end of 2016. NWFB's new permanent site at Tseung Kwan O Depot commenced operation on 1 February 2013. Due to the new depot's AdBlue facility, NWFB started to operate the new Enviro500 12m (5500-5582) on this route from March 2013, followed by MMC 11.3/12-metre (4000-4091/5583-5599/5601-5839) and Volvo B9TL 12m (5200-5224) followed and both became one of the mainstays of the route. From December 2016, the newly registered Enviro400 Euro V 10.4m two-axle double-decker bus (38XX) was assigned to the route and for a time became the mainstay of the route. With the departure of the old short-range Dennis Tridents 10.6m/10.3m (16XX/33XX/3601) from NWFB's fleet, the two-axle double-decker buses were centrally deployed to the Hong Kong Island routes to take up the slack after the withdrawal of the old short-range buses from NWFB's daily operation, and henceforth, only serve this route occasionally. In May 2019, 12.8-metre buses were approved to operate on this route, and the Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (6100-6209) gradually became the main fleet for this route. |

Ridership[]
In the past, Po Lam was also served by New Territories GMB Route 18 (cancelled) to and from Hong Kong Island East. After the commissioning of the MTR Tseung Kwan O Line, this route was not as good as the railway in terms of frequency, fare and journey time. Therefore, NWFB has changed the route, abandoning Quarry Bay which overlapped with Route 18, and lowered the full fare to $12.8 in an attempt to attract passengers by reducing the journey time and the fare, but Tseung Kwan O passengers still tend to choose the MTR to cross the harbour.
According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:
- 2010: The full-day average occupancy rate was only 19% and the off-peak average occupancy rate was even lower at 13%.
- 2012: The occupancy rate ranged from 10-57% during peak hours and 7-41% during off-peak hours. The average occupancy rate was about 22% on a whole day and 16% during off-peak hours, and the utilisation rate after 7:00 p.m. was only about 20%, and after 11:00 p.m., the utilisation rate was even as low as 7%.
- 2013: The whole-day occupancy rate was 3-19%.
- 2016: The average peak hour occupancy rate wa about 40%.
- 2022: The occupancy rate of the busiest hour in the morning when leaving the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel BBI in the direction of Hong Kong Island with Routes 690 and 690P is less than 50%, and the occupancy rate of the busiest hour in the afternoon in the direction of Tseung Kwan O was slightly increased to about 40-55%. [26]

Traffic Accidents[]
- 29 May 2001: A Dennis Trident (3333/JK5927) travelling northbound along Tin Chiu Street on its way to the junction of King's Road crashed into the lift platform of an engineering vehicle of a nearby footbridge refurbishment project, causing a worker together with his seat belt to fall from a height of three metres to the ground with multiple injuries and was in a critical condition. [27]
- 10 May 2015: At around 9:00pm, a Volvo Super Olympian (5089/KJ3608) heading for Tiu Keng Leng Station slowed down due to a cut in traffic in front of it, but the following KMB bus failed to catch up with the brakes and hit the vehicle in front of it, resulting in a three-vehicle head-on collision with six people injured.[28]
- 19 August 2019: At around 3:00pm, a Volvo Super Olympian 5077/KE8045) heading towards Siu Sai Wan Estate ran out of control at the bus stop of Eastern Hospital on Chai Wan Road and hit the pavement, damaging a stop sign. An elderly man fell down and was injured while trying to avoid the bus, and was later sent to hospital[29] together with the driver, who was in discomfort. The bus in question was retired from service as it was approaching the 18-year age limit.
Criminal vandalism[]
- 21 December 2022: At around 7:00am, a woman suspected that she was unable to board a Siu Sai Wan Estate-bound Enviro500 (5562/RX8749) at Po Yan House Po Lam Estate in time, and in a moment of frustration, chased the bus to the junction of Po Lam Road North and Po Hong Road and smashed the bus door glass with a stone.[30] Two days later, the Police finally arrested a 65-year-old woman in the district for "criminal damage" in connection with the case.
