Bus Deployment Evolution History[]

During the intial days of commencement of Route 606, KMB mainly deployed MCW Metrobus9.7m (M) and Dennis Jubilant (N) on this route, whereas CMB deployed 5 buses on this route, mainly Leyland Fleetline (LF/SF) and Dennis Condor (DM). When KMB introduced air-conditioned bus services on this route, 2 Dennis Dragon9.9m (ADS) were deployed. After the route diversion in 1996, CMB buses on this route were increased to 7, using entirely Leyland Fleetline (33-ft LF). Before the end of CMB Franchise, due to mass retirement of Fleetline buses, bus deployments therefore became diversified with 2 MCW Metrobuses (ML), 1 Leyland Olympian (LM) and 2 Leyland Victory II (LV), and CMB stated that this route can be operated with 12m buses. Despite having the air-conditioned fare listed in the fare chart, Dennis Dart (CX) were actually assigned to this route before the commencement of Route A20 in September 1995, and there was no scheduled buses being air-conditioned buses.

Citybus replaced CMB to operate this route in September 1998 and was enhanced to full air-conditioned service, intially using Volvo Olympian 11m (9XX/90XX), and in 2000 Leyland Olympian 10.4m buses with the lowest fleet numbers (205-211). Stepping into the 21st century, KMB entirely deployed low-floor buses on this route, however short-bodied models were used only for a long time: initially newly-registered Volvo Super Olympian 10.6m buses (ASV) were mainly deployed, then replaced by Dennis Trident (ATS, with Duple Metsec bodywork, withdrawn); the only 10.6m Dennis Trident in the Citybus fleet also served this route for a long time until it was shifted to Route 85. From 9 November 2008 onwards, all holiday departures were deployed with MAN NL262 11.7m buses (15XX) to save tunnel fees except during Ching Ming and Chung Yeung Festivals due to low ridership, until the model was entirely retired.

From 17 February 2010, KMB's first Enviro400 with Euro V engine (ATSE1/PC4053) was deployed to service on this route. From 12 April, a two-axle Volvo B9TL 10.6m bus became the scheduled bus of this route, making the number of two-axle double-decker scheduled buses increased to two.

In 2011, many short-bodied Leyland Olympians began retired, and Citybus began deploying 12m buses on this route, mainly Dennis Dragon (8XX) and Enviro500 (81XX-82XX). Later, Enviro400 (70XX) replaced these buses on this route during 2012 to Lunar New Year holidays in 2014, and such a situation disappeared in 2015.

In 2013, KMB deployed 3 new Enviro400s (ATSE32/RV4139, ATSE33/RV5033, ATSE36/RV7831, among them ATSE32 originally served in Route 692 and the others were immediately deployed on this route after registering) on this route, replacing the original Dennis Tridents; Citybus also deployed new Enviro500 MMC (83XX) buses on this route as the bus captains on this route had completed the "Rear Axle Steering" (RAS) special training.

Due to reorganisation of 606-series routes, the new route 606X required the use of large-sized 3-axle double-decker buses. KMB deployed 12m buses on this route for the first time as scheduled buses and served that route on a order basis, and the bus concerned was a Volvo B9TL (AVBE9/MP7622, withdrawn) from Route 101, and later replaced by a Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV191/KD8283); in April, one additional Enviro500 12m (ATE126/LF8639) was deployed on this route to replace the remaining Dennis Trident 10.6m buses; in October of the same year, all mass-production version of 10.6m buses were entirely replaced by 12m double-decker buses.

In October 2014, KMB's VDL DB300 (AMC1/SY4050) entered service, and it became the scheduled bus of this route as expected by the public, serving on this route together with the other two two-axle double-decker buses - Enviro400 (ATSE1/PC4053) and Volvo B9TL 10.6m (AVBWS1/PP9062).

On 4 May 2015, to facilitate the service enhancement of Route 606X, an additional single-decker bus was deployed to this route and the bus was a Volvo B7RLE (AVC58/RH4300).

On 1 September 2015, all KMB's two-axle demonstrator buses on this route were shifted to Route 690, which were replaced by 2 Dennis Trident 10.6m buses with Euro III engines (ATS) and Enviro400 (ATSE) to faiclitate the implementation of Franchised Bus Low Emission Zone policy and that buses matching the emission standards must be used on the route concerned. Afterwards, they were replaced by Enviro500 (ATE) and Volvo B9TL (AVBWU) due to the passenger increase in Route 606X and the need for the deployment of Route 103 with vehicles matching standards, making the short-bodied buses nearly disappeared on this route. 2 years later, 12m buses on this route were replaced by Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) and high-capacity version of Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU, low-capacity version joined between 2018-2022, replaced with Voith version from Routes 1A and 98A, withdrawn 8 months later).

Ridership[]

Due to competition from the MTR and PLB Kwun Tong - Chai Wan Route, the patronage of Route 606 has been low because of its meandering routing, excessive number of stops, limited service hours and sparse headways. Since the commencement of Route 608, it has lost some of the passengers from Hong Kong Island East to Template:AF.

According to the information in the past Bus Route Planning Programmes, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • February 1993 (CMB): The monthly number of passengers was 116,255.
  • 2013: The highest occupancy rates for the whole day were 74% (from Siu Sai Wan) and 67% (from Choi Wan), while that for Ngau Chi Wan to Chai Wan was only about 4%.

Related Incidents[]

Traffic Accidents[]

  • 3 June 1990: At 4:15 p.m., a Chai Wan (East)-bound CMB Leyland Fleetline (LF296/BX3105) travelling along Sheung Yee Road to the junction of Wang Chiu Road failed to apply the brakes, struck and killed a 68-year-old man crossing the road.

Fire Incidents[]

  • 23 November 2006: At about 12:00 noon, smoke emitted from the rear engine of a Siu Sai Wan-bound Citybus Leyland Olympian (208/FS3596) while it was travelling on Yiu Hing Road, with no injuries.
  • 14 July 2012: At around 1:00 pm, a Citybus Dennis Dragon (854/GR2547) returned to Citybus Chai Wan Depot due to mechanical failure; when it reached the Island Eastern Corridor near A Kung Ngam Road, the rear of the bus suddenly caught fire, causing no injuries. The bus was withdrawn from service three days later (17 July) due to serious damage beyond repair.
  • 25 December 2012: At around 6:00 a.m., a Citybus MAN NL262 (1539/HU5465) single-decker bus travelling in the direction of Choi Wan was suspected to have suffered an engine failure, resulting in white smoke and fire when it arrived at the junction of Tai Lok Street, with no injuries. The bus was retired early due to serious damage beyond repair.
