The Cross-Harbour Bus Route 182 is jointly operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) and Citybus. It runs between Yu Chui Court and Central (Macau Ferry), via City One Shatin, Sha Tin Wai and Tai Wai (Sun Chui Estate) in Sha Tin District, Kowloon Tong (Waterloo Road) and Ho Man Tin (Princess Margaret Road) in Kowloon, as well as Wan Chai and Admiralty on the northern coast of Hong Kong Island, using the Lion Rock Tunnel and Cross Harbour Tunnel in between Sha Tin and Hong Kong Island.
History[]
Commencing background[]
In 1986, China Motor Bus (CMB) and Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) submitted their "1986-1988 Bus Route Development Programme" to the Transport Department, which proposed a route numbered "171" between Yuen Chau Kok in Sha Tin and Central. However, the department rejected the application on the grounds that the proposed route would overlap with a railway, violating the Public Transport Inter-modal Coordination Policy's restriction that "Cross-harbour routes shall not be opened in the New Territories unless the route and terminus are well away from a railway corridor."[1]
In response to the implementation of the "Peak Hour Surcharge" by the MTR in May 1988, the authorities relaxed the "Public Transport Inter-modal Coordination Policy" to allow franchised bus companies to operate routes parallel to the MTR Nathan Road Corridor. The Transport Department approved China Motor Bus and Kowloon Motor Bus to operate the above-mentioned Shatin to Central cross-harbour route[2], while approving Citybus to open a residents' bus route between City One Shatin and Central.
In the end, CMB and KMB took the lead and launched the new Route 182 between City One Shatin and Central on 12 August 1989 to compete with Citybus's residents' luxury bus route 60R} (now Route 88R), which began operations two days later.
