Bus Deployment Evolution History[]
During the initial days of commencement of Route 101, KMB mainly deployed Daimler E (D) buses, whereas CMB deployed mostly second-hand buses from the UK, such as Leyland Atlantean (XA). In 1973, CMB replaced them with Daimler Fleetline (LF), and KMB also deployed that model on this route at a later time.
In early 80s, KMB and CMB both deployed Leyland Victory II (CMB: LV, KMB: G), in which KMB installed air-conditioning systems in the driving cab. Between 1983 and 1984 KMB even deployed its first Mercedes-Benz O305 (ME1) and the only one Volvo B10MD (VMD1) as scheduled buses for a period of time; however the former was later shifted to Lai Chi Kok Depot, and the latter was burnt while running on this route towards Kennedy Town on 11 February 1986.
From 1985 onwards both KMB and CMB deployed 11m and 12m buses to this route, with KMB mainly deploying Leylabd Olympian (S3BL, 3BL) and Dennis Dragon (S3N, 3N); whereas CMB mainly deployed MCW Metrobus (MB, ML) and Dennis Condor (DL, DM) on this route.
Air-conditioned buses were introduced to this route since 1991, with KMB mainly deploying Dennis Dragon11m (AD), and Volvo Olympian12m (3AV) in 1994, whereas CMB mainly deployed Volvo Olympian 11m (VA) and Dennis Condor (DA). NWFB introduced low-floor services after taking over this route in 1998 and mainly deployed Dennis Trident (10XX-11XX), whereas the non-air-conditioned buses began to withdraw at the same time; NWFB later purchased a batch of Volvo Super Olympian (50XX) and occassionally appear on this route.
KMB introduced brand-new Volvo Super Olympian (3ASV) entirely on this route, including the 3000th Alexander-bodied bus (3ASV78/JP6375). In 2003, most of ths buses were replaced with brand-new Enviro500 12m (ATE); between 2006 and 2014 Volvo B9TLs joined this route (including AVBW4 with Wright body and Enviro500-bodied AVBE; in August 2012, all these buses were replaced with AVBWU with Euro 5 engines originally from Route 106, which had CCTVs installed at every corners when they were ferried to Hong Kong).
In 2014, Enviro500 MMC (ATENU, temporarily rejoined for a short time in July 2022) and high-capacity version Volvo B9TL (AVBWU) buses were introduced to this route .
In January 2018, KMB replaced all buses with high-capacity Volvo B9TL (AVBWU) buses on this route.
In October 2019, KMB introduced Enviro500 MMC Hybrid 12m (ATH) on this route, but was later withdrawn in May 2020.
Since 2010s, second-hand buses from CMB fleet and Dennis Tridents in the NWFB fleet began to be decommissioned, and were replaced by Enviro500/Enviro500 MMC 11.3m/12m buses (40XX/55XX-58XX) and Volvo B9TL 12m (52XX) which became the main models on this route. As NWFB raised the emission standard of buses that can enter the Franchised Bus Low Emisson Zones (LEZ)s, Volvo Super Olympian (50XX) and Enviro500 (4000-4019/5500-5517) with Euro 4 engines were withdrawn.
In June 2020, Volvo B8L 12.8m (V6X) of KMB fleet joined this route.
In September 2020, 12.8m buses were allowed to be deployed on KMB departures, and KMB swiftly introduced Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (E6X) on this route, and Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (E6X128/WW1552, withdrawn) was deployed on this route for the first time; later, Volvo B8L 12.8m buses (V6X, rejoined in May 2023) replaced all these buses on this route.
Since October 2021, NWFB also deployed 12.8m buses on this route.

Ridership[]
Route 101 is an old-typed Cross-Harbour Bus Route with wide coverage and therefore attracting many passengers along the route. However its journey time is quite long, and passengers in Kwun Tong can even choose to ride Route 619 that observes Eastern Harbour Crossing to and from Central, making those travelling between Central and Kowloon City being the major passenger source of this route.
According to Bus Route Planning Programme (BRPP) and other data, the ridership of this route is as folows:
- 1993: The monthly patronage was 793,019 passengers.
- 2013: The occupancy rates during the morning peak period were 25-55% (for Kennedy Town) and 73-95% (for Kwun Tong), and the occupancy rates during the afternoon peak period were 63-82% (for Kennedy Town) and 51-73% (for Kwun Tong).
- 2014: The occupancy rates were 27-49% (Kennedy Town) and 69-100% (Kwun Tong) during the morning peak period, and 88-100% (Kennedy Town) and 51-72% (Kwun Tong) during the afternoon peak period.*
- 2015:
- Before the opening of the MTR Island Line Extension to Western District: the average occupancy rate of the busiest half-hour during the peak period was 89%, while it was 84% after the opening of the MTR Island Line Extension to Western District, with a drop of 15.6% in patronage;
- July: the morning peak occupancy rates were 54% (from Kennedy Town) and 89% (from Kwun Tong), and the afternoon peak occupancy rates were 77% (from Kennedy Town) and 59% (from Kwun Tong).
- 2016: The average occupancy rate of the busiest half-hour increased from 89.4% in January to March 2016 to 95.8% after the opening of the Kwun Tong Line Extension.
- 2022: NWFB indicated that the patronage has decreased by about 15% since the commissioning of the cross-harbour section of the East Rail Line; the average maximum occupancy rate of the half-hourly trips towards Kennedy Town before 8:00 a.m. on weekdays during NWFB's operating hours is about 60-70%; and the average occupancy rate of the half-hourly trips towards Kennedy Town between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m. on weekdays was about 60% or more, with the average occupancy rate of passengers between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m. on weekdays being about 60% or more, as shown by the TD's survey conducted in the toll plaza of the Cross Harbour Tunnel at Hung Hom in late July. The average occupancy rate of the Kennedy Town-bound journeys between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on weekdays was about 60%, which was lower than the figure recorded in the survey conducted in mid-to-late May. However, the occupancy rate of individual journeys was higher, and some passengers might need to travel on the subsequent journeys.
