The North Lantau Shuttle Bus Route S52 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Tung Chung (Yat Tung Estate) and Aircraft Maintenance Area, via MTR Tung Chung Station, Cathay Pacific City and Airport Cargo Area. It is currently the only whole-day public transport serving the Business Aviation Area (BAA).

Among the existing North Lantau Shuttle Bus Routes ("S Routes") operated by Citybus and Long Win Bus (LWB), this route and Route S52A are the only ones that do not operate as circular routes. Due to the tight schedule, this route usually picks up and drops off passengers at the same time after arriving at Aircraft Maintenance Area, stops for a short while and then heads back to Tung Chung. The actual mode of operation is close to a circular route, and there are restrictions on boarding and alighting for circular routes listed on the route map.

History[]

The main article of this section is Transport Study for the New Airport.

On 22 October 1996, Citybus was awarded a franchise for a group of bus routes in North Lantau and the Chek Lap Kok New Airport, comprising routes between the Airport/North Lantau and Kowloon/Hong Kong Island, as well as four bus routes to and from the Airport and Tung Chung New Town.[1]

  • 22 June 1998: Citybus introduced a new route S52 between Tung Chung MTR Station and the Aircraft Maintenance Area to coincide with the opening of the Airport Logistics Area. [2][3]
  • 20 June 1999: The following changes were implemented to tie in with the reorganisation of the Airport Shuttle Bus Routes:[4]
    • Buses were diverted via Chun Yue Road and Chun Wan Road South to and from Aviation Fuel Tank Farm and Airport Freight Forwarding Centre, no longer observing Cathay City and HACTL, and detoured via Chun Ping Road;
    • Octopus Interchange Concession Scheme with Route S55 was introduced to tie in with the cancellation of Route S54.
  • 2 April 2001: To tie in with the cancellation of Route S55, the original Octopus Interchange Concession with this route was provided by Route E21 instead.
  • 23 April 2001: Extended to Tung Chung (Yat Tung), with the temporary bus terminus set up at Yu Tung Road near the roadside of Ching Yat House of Yat Tung (I) Estate, as the bus terminus in the estate was not yet in operation.[5][6]
  • 27 January 2003: Octopus Interchange Concession with Route S56 was introduced. [7]
  • 30 May 2004: The Yat Tung Estate terminus was relocated to the covered public transport interchange at the ground level of Carpark 2 of Yat Tung Estate.[8]
  • 7 July 2008: Return trips resumed via Cathay City and Chun Wan Road, no longer observing Chun Yue Road and Chun Wan Road South.[9]
  • 25 August 2008: The "Chun Ping Road" stop at Chun Wan Road eastbound was cancelled for Tung Chung direction, and the "Airport Freight Forwarding Centre" stop was moved forward by 20 metres at the same time. [10]
  • 20 April 2015: Diverted via Mei Tung Street when accessing the Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus as the old exit of the terminus was closed. [11]
  • 22 January 2017: The "Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal" bus stop at Tat Tung Road was cancelled for both directions.[12]
  • 28 August 2017: A new special departure was introduced, departing from Tung Chung (Yat Tung Estate) every Mondays to Fridays morning, heading directly to South Perimeter Road to Aircraft Maintenance Area after observing Tung Chung Station. [13]
    • Some netizens pointed out that the special departure had commenced service as early as 26 June of the same year, but Citybus did not announce it to the public. [14]
  • 15 December 2017: "Next Bus" Arrival Time Inquiry Service was introduced on this route.[15]
  • 23 July 2018: The original 17:05 Monday to Friday additional departure from Aircraft Maintenance Area to Yat Tung Estate was replaced by a special departure terminating at Tung Chung Station. The special departure would go along Chek Lap Kok South Road directly to Tung Chung Station, omitting Chun Wan Road and Scenic Road. [16]
