The Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route (Overnight Service) N8X is operated by Citybus. It runs between Siu Sai Wan (Island Resort) and Kennedy Town, via Chai Wan, Shau Kei Wan, Sai Wan Ho, Quarry Bay, North Point (King's Road), Causeway Bay, Wan Chai (Hennessy Road), Admiralty, Central (Des Voeux Road Central), Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Pun (Des Voeux Road West) and Shek Tong Tsui.

The extension to Kennedy Town enabled Route N8X to traverse the entire developed area on the north shore of Hong Kong Island, and brought the first regular overnight bus route to Western District. Despite the "X" at the end of its number, the route did not pass through any express sections, and the journey from Shau Kei Wan to Western District was largely along the tram stops, making it largely a trunk route and the regular bus route with the most number of stops on Hong Kong Island.

Citybus initially used the route number "N8X" to distinguish it from the first overnight route N8 introduced by China Motor Bus (now operated by Citybus). This route had been listed as a separate route in Schedule of Routes Orders for many years, and was re-listed in 2015 as a special trip of Route 8X [1], except from 18 June 2023 when it was reverted back to a separate route.

History[]

  • 22 April 1996: Route N8X commenced service between Siu Sai Wan (North Wing) and Central (Macau Ferry). On the same day, CMB Route N8, which had a similar routing, also commenced service.
  • 30 August 1998: Octopus payment accepted on the entire route. [2]
  • 30 January 2000: Rerouted via the new section of Chai Wan Road, omitting Wing Tai Road, Ka Yip Street, Sheung On Street for Siu Sai Wan direction. [3]
  • 23 July 2001: Siu Sai Wan terminus was relocated to Island Resort. [4]
  • 23 August 2005: In conjunction with NWFB and Citybus's reorganisation of overnight routes in the Eastern District, Octopus short trips with section fares were introduced, and a 15-minute combined headways with Route N8 was provided on the section between Shau Kei Wan and Wan Chai. [5]
  • 16 March 2015: Changed to "Special Departure" attached to daytime route 8X in the Schedule of Routes Order, and no longer regarded as a separate route.
  • 16 January 2018: "Next Bus" Arrival Time Enquiry Service was introduced on this route. [6]
  • 3 September 2018: Extended to Kennedy Town:[7][8]
    • The full fare was increased to $12.5 and a new Octopus section fare was added for both directions;
    • The first bus time was advanced to 00:30 from Kennedy Town to Siu Sai Wan.
  • 18 June 2023: Reverted back to a separate route.
  • 10 March 2025: Rerouted via Wan Tsui Road and omitted the area around Chai Wan Industrial Estate.[9][10]
