The Overnight North Lantau External Bus Route N11 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Central (Macau Ferry) and Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) [Remark 1] via Admiralty, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Jordan, the Cross Harbour Tunnel, West Kowloon Highway, Lantau Link, Tung Chung Town Centre and the Airport Logistics Area. It is one of only three whole-night external overnight routes in northern Lantau Island.[Remark 2]

History[]

The main article of this section is Transport Study for the New Airport.

On 22 October 1996, Citybus won the franchise for one of the bus routes in North Lantau and the new airport at Chek Lap Kok, covering a number of bus routes to and from the airport, North Lantau, Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, as well as four bus routes to and from the airport and the East Coast. The bus routes in Tung Chung New Town include an overnight route numbered E110 between Causeway Bay (Moreton Terrace) and the Airport (Ground Transport Centre).[1]

  • 22 June 1998: Route N11 started in conjunction with the opening Hong Kong International Airport, running between Causeway Bay (Moreton Terrace) and Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) via the Western Harbor Crossing, the same as Route E11 at that time.[2]
  • 11 July 1998: After leaving the Airport, the route was diverted to go directly to the Airport Logistics Area without going via Cheong Tat Road.[3]
  • 27 June 1999: To simplify the routing towards Airport Logistics Area: [4]
    • Towards Airport: Upon arrival at Chek Lap Kok South Road, buses would continue along Chek Lap Kok South Road straight to Chun Ping Road, and would not return to Chun Ping Road via Scenic Road, Chun Yue Road, Chun Wan Road South and Chun Wan Road;
    • Towards Causeway Bay: Upon reaching Chun Ping Road, buses were diverted via Chek Lap Kok South Road direct to Tung Chung, not returning to Chun Wan Road via Chun Wan Road South, Chun Yue Road and Scenic Road to Chek Lap Kok South Road; and at the same time, in view of the commissioning of the Bus Stop Loop on Scenic Road, buses were detoured via the loop and a new stop was set up there, in order to replace the intermediate stop "Cathay City" at Scenic Road southbound.
  • 3 October 1999: A two-way section fare from Airport to Tung Chung was introduced. [5]
  • 20 December 1999: The frequency was reduced to 30-minute intervals and the full fare was reduced. [6]
  • 24 September 2004: Due to the permanent closure of the southern end of Cheong Tat Road, the bus stop "Car Park 2" on Cheong Tat Road was cancelled when heading towards Chek Lap Kok Ferry Pier, and was replaced by the stop at Car Park 1 on the temporary road to the east of Cheong Tat Road.
  • 22 August 2006: Rerouted via Cross-Harbour Tunnel at Hung Hom to save tunnel toll expenditure: [7][8]
    • Detoured to and from West Kowloon Highway via Gascoigne Road, Jordan Road and Lin Cheung Road;
    • The Hong Kong Island terminus was relocated to Macau Ferry and modification of the routing within Hong Kong Island, since then the routing and intermediate stop locations at Des Voeux Road Central, Queensway and Hennessy Road were largely different from those of Route E11;
    • A new Octopus interchange concession with Route 5B was introduced, which was the first set of bus-bus interchange concession between overnight routes and daytime routes in Hong Kong.
  • 25 August 2008: The "Chun Ping Road" and "Airport Freight Forwarding Centre" stops originally located at Chun Wan Road eastbound towards AsiaWorld-Expo were cancelled permanently and replaced by a new "Airport Freight Forwarding Centre" stop between the two original stops.[9]
  • 2 January 2011: Due to the closure of southbound lane of Lin Cheung Road near the West Kowloon Terminus site under the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link Project, buses towards Central were rerouted via D1A(N) road and return to original routing at Jordan Road.
  • 23 April 2016: A new bus stop was added at "Cannon Street" on Gloucester Road.
  • 30 March 2017: Starting from 2:30pm, buses towards AsiaWorld-Expo were diverted via Cheong Hong Road underneath the bridge section of Cheong Tat Road to "Regal Airport Hotel" bus stop for Tung Chung Station direction, and the "Car Park 4" bus stop was cancelled to tie in with the closure of the section of Cheong Tat Road outside the Government Lounge Carpark for the Airport Passenger Terminal Building extension.[10][11]
  • 15 April 2017: The southbound lane of Lin Cheung Road north of Jordan Road was reopened and DA1 (N) road was permanently closed. Buses towards Central resumed passing through the section of Lin Cheung Road. [12]
  • 15 December 2017: "Next Bus" Arrival Time Inquiry Service was introduced on this route.[13]
  • 28 October 2021: Due to the construction of the Central Kowloon Route, vehicles heading for Lin Cheung Road from West Kowloon Highway cannot turn left to Jordan Road, thus this route was diverted via Nga Cheung Road for Central direction. [14]
  • 26 September 2022: The frequency was reduced to four round rips each way, departing from Macau Ferry at 01:20, 02:20, 03:20 and 04:20, and from the Airport at 01:50, 02:50, 03:50 and 04:50. [15]

Related incidents[]

  • 23 December 2015: At approximately 3 am, a Enviro500 MMC (8527/TJ5561) heading towards Airport was preparing to stop at "Woosung Street" stop on Jordan Road when it crashed into a crane truck that was cleaning the exterior wall of a building on the roadside and smashed three windows. A male passenger was injured.[18]
  • 16 May 2019: At approximately 4 am, the Cross-Harbour Tunnel implemented a single-tunnel two-way traffic system. A private car with a Guangdong-Hong Kong Licence Plate heading towards Hong Kong Island crossed the lane in the tunnel and collided head-on with an Enviro500 MMC (6565/UR3708) heading towards the airport. The bus lost control again and crashed into a private car following a taxi, causing serious damage to the fronts of the three vehicles. In the accident, a total of 11 people, including three vehicle drivers, a male taxi passenger, and seven bus passengers, were injured and sent to the hospital, whereas the driver of a private car was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.[19]
