The North Lantau External Bus Route B5 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Port[Remark 1] and Sunny Bay Station via Shun Long Road, North Lantau Highway and Penny's Bay Highway, with some trips additionally observing Disneyland.

This is the first and only North Lantau External Bus Route with its service area entirely within Lantau Island, which was commenced to tie in with the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB).

Commencement Background[]

In 2016, the Transport Department (TD) published the Local Public Transport Arrangements at the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, proposing to provide an additional green minibus route to and from Tung Chung Station and two franchised bus routes to connect with the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities on the opening day of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, one to and from the Airport and AsiaWorld-Expo and the other to and from Sunny Bay Station.[1]

Due to the delay in the construction of the Shun Long Road (Southern Link of Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link) and taking into account the views of the local community, the TD revised the routing between HZMB Hong Kong Port and Sunny Bay Station in May 2017 to run via Disneyland during the morning admission peak hours and the period after the fireworks display[Remark 2] in the evening. As Shun Long Road is not expected to open in time for the commissioning of the Bridge, the Sunny Bay route will have to be rdiverted via roads within the Airport island to and from the Port, which was expected to increase the journey time significantly and reduce its attractiveness. Full-day service will only be provided upon the commissioning of the road.[2]

Following an open tendering process, the TD announced on 29 November 2017 that the franchise for the route between the HZMB Hong Kong Port and Sunny Bay Station was awarded to Citybus[3] with the route number "B5".

Route Change History[]

  • 24 October 2018: Route B5 commenced service between the HZMB Hong Kong Port and Sunny Bay Station from 8:45am.[4][5]
    • As the main viaduct and the eastern slip road of Shun Long Road were open to traffic at the same time as the HZMB, the original special temporary diversion measures had not been implemented and this route was be provided with full day service as scheduled.
  • 29 April: All morning departures from Sunny Bay Station and evening departures from Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Port no longer observed Disneyland.[6][7]

Ridership[]

Following the opening of the HZMB, the capacity of the NLB Route B6 was exceeded and the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Mr Frank Chan, suggested that passengers should take this route to Sunny Bay Station to connect to the MTR. Many tour groups have responded to the Government's appeal, enabling this route to divert the heavy passenger flow of Route B6.[9][10][11] Coupled with the $1 Octopus interchange discount for connecting to B5 by MTR, this is considered a more economical way to travel to and from the HZMB Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities, and has brought many passengers to Route B5.

Since the second half of 2019, the number of visitors to Hong Kong has decreased due to social movements and the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge for some time, the number of visitors has dropped from its peak. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus epidemic (later called as COVID-19 pandemic) in 2020 has led to a significant drop in demand to and from Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau, resulting in poor ridership.

According to the BRDP and other information, the ridership of this route is as follows.

  • 2018: In the first ridership survey conducted on 11 November, the occupancy rate between 9am and 10am towards the HZMB Hong Kong Port was 88%; and between 1pm and 2pm towards Sunny Bay Station was 89%. In the first patronage survey conducted on 4 December, the utilisation rate for the HZMB Hong Kong Port between 9am and 10am was 66%, while the utilisation rate for the Sunny Bay Station between 10am and 11am was 67%.[12] In addition, in the following March, the Islands District Council also documented that the daily ridership of this route in November was about 5,000 to 10,000, and that an additional 12% frequency was added.[13]

Related Incidents[]

  • 5 December 2019: At around 11am, an Enviro 500 MMC (6581/VR7479) heading towards Sunny Bay Station crashed into the rear of a heavy goods vehicle in front of it on Sunny Bay Road, causing serious damage to the front end and injuring four people.[14]
