The Airbus Route A20 is one of the "Cityflyer" routes operated by Citybus. It runs between Hung Hom Station and Airport, via Ho Man Tin, Yau Ma Tei (Waterloo Road), Mong Kok West (Hoi Wang Road), Tai Kok Tsui, Mong Kok, Sham Shui Po, Cheung Sha Wan, Mei Foo, via Tsuen Wan Road, Tsing Yi North Coastal Road, Lantau Link.

Although the origin and destination of Route A20 is the same as that of Route A21, the latter route passes through Tsim Sha Tsui, Sham Mong Road, and HZMB Hong Kong Port, and there is a difference in the catchment area between the two routes.

This route is the only Chek Lap Kok Airport bus route that reuses the old Kai Tak Airport bus route numbers[Remark 1]; of the many Cityflyer routes, this is the only one that does not serve the HZMB Hong Kong Port.

History[]

Commencing background[]

Given that Route A21 does not run via Cheung Sha Wan Road, passengers travelling to and from the Hong Kong International Airport need to take E21 routes which bypass Tsing Yi, Tung Chung and the Airport Logistics Area, or walk to Sham Mong Road to take A21, which is quite inconvenient for people travelling with large luggage.

Given this, the Administration proposed in the 2016-2017 Bus Route Planning Programme that Citybus should introduce Route A21P to and from Kwai Chung Road along Chatham Road South, Salisbury Road, Nathan Road and Cheung Sha Wan Road to make up for the shortfall in the direct service to the airport from Cheung Sha Wan Road. It is estimated that residents of Sham Shui Po, Cheung Sha Wan and Mei Foo can save about 20 minutes of travelling time to and from the Airport by using this route as compared with Route E21.

The route was finally numbered A20, which observes Canton Road and Kowloon Park Drive in the direction of the Airport and serves travellers from hotels in the Harbour City area.

Route change history[]

  • 20 March 2017: Route A20 commenced service.[2][3]
  • 23 September 2019: Rerouted both directions via Ho Man Tin and Tai Kok Tsui, omitting Tsim Sha Tsui and Jordan. [4][5]
  • 29 November 2019: Due to the expansion works at the Airport Terminal 2, buses on the Airport direction no longer detoured via Sky Plaza Road and the "Airport (Terminal Two)" bus stop was cancelled. [6][7]
  • 16 February 2020: The first bus hour from Airport was advanced from 11:00 to 10:30.[8]
  • 1 April 2020: Due to the novel coronavirus pneumonia, the service hour was drastically reduced with trips departing from Hung Hom between 06:30 and 13:30, whereas that from Airport from 15:30 and 22:30.[9]
  • 22 April 2020: Service was further reduced due to pandemic, with trips departing from Hung Hom between 06:30 and 09:30, whereas that from Airport between 16:30 and 19:00, i.e. four trips each direction.[10]
  • 24 May 2020: Diverted via Lai Cheung Road to Hoi Wang Road for Airport direction due to the permanent closure of partial sections of Ngo Cheung Road caused by the Central Kowloon Route construction works.[11][12]
  • 28 December 2020: Due to the continuous low patronage during the pandemic, service was suspended until 12 November 2023. [13]

Ridership[]

Before this route was re-routed via Ho Man Tin and Tai Kok Tsui, although it was quicker to travel between the Airport and Cheung Sha Wan Road than Route E21, the travelling time to and from Yau Tsim Mong District was longer than that of Route A21 which had an overlapping routing, and the overall patronage remained low.

Although the diversion of the route to cover Ho Man Tin and Tai Kok Tsui by the airport bus service has slightly improved the patronage, the overall patronage has remained low, and the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic in 2020 has led to the suspension of this route for nearly three years.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programme and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2019: Before rerouting via Ho Man Tin and Tai Kok Tsui, the occupancy rate was 36% during the busiest hour. [17]
  • 2020: With the diversion to Ho Man Tin and Tai Kok Tsui, the highest daily hourly occupancy rate in both directions was about 40%. [18]

Remarks[]

  1. Historically, the new Chek Lap Kok Airport bus routes did not reuse the old Airbus route numbers. Until the introduction of this route, the numbering was the same as the Route A20 between Central and Kai Tak Airport that CMB had operated in the past.
