The Airbus Route A17 is one of the "Cityflyer" routes operated by Citybus. It runs between Sham Wan and Airport, via Ocean Park, Shouson Hill (Nam Fung Road), Wong Nai Chung Gap, Happy Valley, Wan Chai (Queen's Road East), Admiralty, Central (→) and HZMB Hong Kong Port, taking the Western Harbour Crossing, Stonecutters Bridge and Lantau Link.

History[]

Over the years, Route A10 had been the only route to and from the Airport in the Southern District, but it failed to cover Wong Chuk Hang, Ocean Park, Shouson Hill, and so on. On the other hand, Wong Nai Chung Gap, Happy Valley and Queen's Road East in Wan Chai are not served by direct bus services to the Airport, and routes A11 and A12 do not stop at Admiralty for Airport direction.

Coinciding with the opening of Ocean Park's first hotel, the Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel, on 19 February 2019[2], the demand for transport to and from the Airport was expected to rise. In view of this, the Transport Department (TD) and Citybus have proposed to introduce this route to cover the above area in the 2018-2019 Bus Route Planning Programme. [3]

Route Change History[]

  • 6 January 2020: Route A17 commenced service. [4][5]
  • 17 February 2020: Due to the novel coronavirus pneumonia, the service time of the route was temporarily and substantially reduced, the last bus time from Sham Wan was advanced to 12:30; the first bus time from the Airport was delayed to 16:30.[6][7]
  • 1 April 2020: Service was suspended until 12 November 2023 due to the novel coronavirus pneumonia. [8]
  • 13 November 2023:[9][1]
    • Limited service was resumed, with the daily service time of departures from Sham Wan being 05:30, 06:30 and 07:30, whereas that from Airport being 21:30, 22:30 and 23:30;
    • Rerouted via Chek Lap Kok Road, Tung Wing Road and Airport Road to return to Cheong Hong Road and original routing after arriving at Shun Wui Road according to the original routing for Airport direction.

Passengers using the above payment method can only enjoy the interchange concessions with other Citybus solely-operated routes or the Citybus departures of the jointly-operated routes, and cannot enjoy the "Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme".
  • Passengers can also tender Pre-paid Return Tickets into the coin box in lieu of fares. For more on the purchase of Pre-paid Return Tickets, see the section below.

Pre-paid Return Tickets[]

Pre-paid Return Tickets are priced at $70.0 and are valid for three months from the date of purchase. They are valid for any journey on this route, A10, A11, A12, A26, A28 or A29 to the city and to the Airport.

Passengers can purchase pre-paid tickets at Citybus Customer Service Centres, Citybus eShop shopping platform or designated travel agents.[10]

Same-day Return Discount[]

Airport Staff Concessionary Travel Scheme

Eligible Airport and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HKBCF) staff holding a Personalised Octopus or Personalised Octopus for Airport Staff recorded and approved by Citybus can travel on this route at a concessionary fare of $28.2 ($17.7 for Lantau Link Bus-Bus Interchange to Airport/HZMB Hong Kong Port). Passengers are required to present the front of their registered "Authorised Employee Status" Octopus Card to the bus captain upon boarding, and pay the fare with the card upon confirmation by the bus captain without having to wait for the Octopus fare adjustment.[12]

Bus Deployments[]

Due to the narrow road surface of Deep Water Bay Road, this route can only be served by the coach version of Cityflyer fleet, Enviro500 MMC 12m (8000-8065). Moreover, due to the road surface restriction at the roundabout of Stubbs Road, buses turning into Wong Nai Chung Gap Road from Tai Hang Road in the direction of Sham Wan need to make a detour around the roundabout of Stubbs Road to enter the road smoothly[Note 2], unlike Route 41A and Route 63, which were once prohibited to serve this route. However, the 12.8-metre 6844 once served this route ignoring the restriction.

As the only depot of Citybus Franchise (II), Siu Ho Wan Depot (T), is far away from the Southern District, in case of fleet shortage (e.g. bus breakdown), buses without luggage racks have to be dispatched from the S or the E of Franchise (III) in order to maintain the headways.
