The Airbus Route A11 is one of the "Cityflyer" routes operated by Citybus. It runs between North Point Ferry Pier and Airport, via Fortress Hill, Tai Hang (→), Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Admiralty (←), Central and Sheung Wan, taking Western Harbour Crossing, Stonecutters Bridge and Lantau Link direct to HZMB Hong Kong Port and Airport Passenger Terminal Building, providing a luxury airport bus service for the major commercial districts in Hong Kong Island North.

History[]

See: Transport Study for the New Airport
  • 6 July 1998: Cityflyer Route A11 commenced service at the same time as the New Airport at Chek Lap Kok between Causeway Bay (Moreton Terrace) and Hong Kong International Airport. [2]
  • 20 December 1998: Hong Kong Island terminus was relocated to Causeway Bay (Tin Hau MTR Station), via Gloucester Road, Queensway and Queen's Road Central to the Airport, and Des Voeux Road Central and Hennessy Road to Hong Kong Island. [3]
  • 2 April 2001: Hong Kong Island terminus was relocated to North Point Ferry Pier. At the same time, the Airport-bound routing was diverted from Gloucester Road to Harcourt Road to Central instead of Queensway, Queen's Road Central and Pedder Street, while the Hong Kong Island-bound routing was diverted to Connaught Road Central instead of Des Voeux Road Central. [4]
  • 16 December 2001: The section fare from Macau Ferry to North Point Ferry Pier was reduced. [5]
  • 27 January 2002: Octopus interchange concessions with various urban routes were introduced. [6]
  • 21 November 2004: TD implemented the "Paterson Street Diversion Pilot Scheme", whereby the section of Paterson Street between Gloucester Road and Kingston Street was changed from northbound to southbound traffic, making it impossible for vehicles to make a right turn from Kingston Street to Paterson Street, and the original bus stop at Kingston Street was cancelled accordingly, which was replaced by a bus stop on Gloucester Road northbound near Kingston Street. [7]
  • 16 August 2005: Octopus interchange concession with Route R8 was introduced. [8]
  • 5 December 2007: Airport-bound buses were detoured via Terminal 2, with a intermediate stop outside the vehicle entrance of the Coach Terminal. [9]
  • 8 June 2008 onwards: On designated days when major events are held at AsiaWorld-Expo, special trips are operated from the AsiaWorld-Expo after the end of the events, with a non-stop airport service to the urban area.
  • 15 February 2009: The Terminal 2 bus stop for Airport direction was relocated to outside the departure level at Sky Plaza Road.
  • 31 January 2010: Diverted via Stonecutters Bridge and Nam Wan Tunnel, no longer passing through Cheung Tsing Highway, Cheung Tsing Tunnel and Tsing Kwai Highway. [10]
  • 25 July 2010: An additional section fare from the Airport (Terminal One) to the Ground Transportation Centre was introduced. [11]
  • 10 December 2012: The last bus to the Airport was advanced to 22:30.[12]
    • According to the annual Bus Route Development Programme for that year, the vast majority of departing flights depart before 01:30, and as passengers needed to check in two hours before flight departure (i.e. they need to arrive at the Airport at or before 23:30), this results in low patronage for the Airport-bound trips near late night.
  • 1 July 2013: To tie in with NWFB's franchise extension, Octopus Interchange concessions with NWFB routes 15 and 722 were introduced. [13]
  • 14 May 2016: North Point terminus was relocated to the newly built North Point Ferry Pier Public Transport Interchange, and North Point-bound buses were diverted to the new terminus via Tin Chiu Street after Java Road. [14]
  • 1 June 2016: To tie in with the extension of Citybus Franchise I, new Octopus interchange concessions with Routes 70P, 511 and 780P were introduced. [15]
  • 24 October 2018: The service hours were extended and route changes were made to tie in with the commissioning of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge:[16][17]
    • The first bus time from the Airport is advanced to 05:35 and the last bus time from North Point Ferry Pier was postponed to 23:30;
    • For Airport bound, starting from 8:30 a.m., after stopping at "Airport (Terminal Two)" stop at Sky Plaza Road and arriving at Airport South Interchange, the route was detoured via Cheong Lin Road, Sky City Interchange, Chek Lap Kok Road, Shun Fai Road, Shun Wui Road, Chek Lap Kok Road, Sky City interchange and Cheong Lin Road to return to Airport South Interchange, and a new intermediate stop was added at "Hong Kong Port" on Shun Fai Road;
    • For Hong Kong Island, starting from 9 a.m., after reaching Airport South Interchange, the route was diverted to via Cheong Lin Road, Sky City Interchange, Chek Lap Kok Road, Shun Fai Road and Shun Wui Road, and then return to the original routing at Airport South Interchange via the same route after stopping at an additional intermediate stop at HZMB Hong Kong Port Public Transport Interchange.
  • 27 November 2018: After stopping at the "Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Port" stop towards Hong Kong Island, the route was changed to return to North Lantau Highway and original routing via Shun Long Road. [18][19]
  • 29 November 2019: Due to the expansion of Terminal 2 of the Airport, the route no longer detoured via Sky Plaza Road, and the original "Airport (Terminal 2)" stop was cancelled.[20][21]
  • 22 April 2020: Due to the novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak, service hours of the route were reduced, with service time from North Point shortened to 05:20 to 22:30 and the first bus from the airport delayed to 06:10. [22]
  • 14 December 2020: Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, the service time was further reduced and the last bus from North Point was advanced to 21:50 [23]
  • 15 December 2020: Diverted via Chek Lap Kok Road, Tung Wing Road, Airport Road,Airport South Interchange and Cheong Lin Road to return to Ground Transportation Centre Bus Terminus after arriving at Shun Wui Road for Airport direction. [24]
  • 10 March 2021: Due to the novel coronavirus pneumonia, the service time of the route was reduced for the third time, and the departures from North Point from 09:50 to 11:50 and 14:50 to 16:50 were cancelled; and the departures from Airport from 09:10 to 14:10 were cancelled. [25]
  • 19 January 2022: Due to novel coronavirus pneumonia, the last bus from North Point was advanced to 20:50.[26]

Bus Deployments[]

Currently, 13 and 15 air-conditioned double-decker buses are deployed on this route in the morning and 15 in the afternoon, of which two are required to support Routes 952P and A20 respectively during the morning peak hours from Mondays to Saturdays; the main buses used are the luxury version of Enviro500 MMC 12-metre (80XX) and 12.8-metre (68XX, 638XX), which belong to the Cityflyer fleet.

During holidays and peak periods, Citybus operates additional special trips from the HZMB Hong Kong Port to the urban areas, mainly using the regular Enviro500 MMC 12-metre (8507-8524) and 12.8-metre (6501-6588) vehicles equipped with luggage racks, which are not fixed. However, as the number of travellers using the HZMB for customs clearance has dropped, these special trips have been reduced and ordinary buses are not often used.

Ridership[]

There are also the MTR Airport Express and Citybus routes E11 and E11A for travelling between Central and the Airport, but the fare of this route is cheaper than the railway, and does not detour via Tung Chung and the Airport Logistics Area which "E" routes do, heading directly to Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay which are the hotspots for shopping and hotels; the number of passengers is even higher after detouring via the HZMB Hong Kong Port, which has caused Citybus to increase the number of special trips during weekends and during peak periods, and has even introduced the Roite A11T to alleviate the pressure of passenger growth. However, with the decrease in the number of inbound travellers in the second half of 2019 and the waning of the popularity of using the HZMB for customs clearance, the patronage of this route has dropped, and corresponding frequency adjustments have been made, including the reduction of the number of special trips operated from the HZMB Hong Kong Port and the cancellation of the service of Route A11T upon the expiry of the trial period.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programme and other documents, the patronage of this route is as follows:

  • 2012: The average daily patronage was 2,500; the total number of passengers travelling on the Airport-bound trips after 22:30 before the last bus time was advanced was 2, i.e. an average of about 1 passenger per trip.
  • 2018: The overall passenger amounts of 9 franchised A Routes, including this route, Routes A21, A22, A29, A31, A33X, A35, A36 and A41, were: 910,000 thousand (September); 110,300 (October); 138,300 (November). [30]
  • 2019: Upon completion of the HZMB Hong Kong Port, the peak hour patronage rate to the airport/border crossing and the urban area is 61% and 47% respectively. [31]

Related Incidents[]

  • 17 November 1998: At 8:45 a.m., a North Point Ferry Pier-bound Dennis Trident (licence plate HU2XX) was leaving the Western Harbour Crossing and travelling along Connaught Road West when it was suspected to have failed to retract its brakes when it came to a traffic light lamppost opposite the Western Indoor Games Hall and crashed into the rear of a Hong Kong Island GMB Route 53 minibus, which had stopped at a lamppost position in front of it. The accident caused injuries to 18 people, including all the occupants of the minibus and one bus passenger, and a mobile medical unit of the Fire Services Department was deployed to the scene. [32][33]
  • 16 March 2001: A Dennis Trident (2149/HU269) heading for North Point Ferry Pier was hit by a Volvo Olympian (AV247/HH5793) running on Route 961 behind it at the Western Harbour Crossing bus stop, injuring 15 people. [34]
  • 29 April 2009: At around 10:00 am, a bus captain suffering from heart disease driving a North Point Ferry Pier-bound Dennis Trident (2126/HT3633) suffered a sudden attack on the West Kowloon Highway, and the bus went out of control and crashed into a construction vehicle, injuring 12 people. [35][36]
  • 16 October 2011: 20 people were injured when a North Point Ferry Pier-bound Dennis Trident (2151/HT9721) was hit by a Volvo Olympian (692/HV1286) on Route 969 at the rear of the bus at Connaught Road West at around 5:00 pm. [37][38]
  • 19 March 2018: 11 people were injured when an airport-bound Enviro500 MMC (8039/SL5042) lost control of its vehicle and crashed into the roadside railings on the North Lantau Highway near Caribbean Coast in Tung Chung at around 11:00 am. [39][40][41]
  • 21 April 2019: At around 4:00 pm, a traffic accident occurred at Tsing Ma Bridge towards the Airport, in which five buses collided in a series of collisions involving a Park Island Transport Young Man JNP6122G (301/PM6822), an Enviro500 MMC (6510/TJ3111) serving Route E32, a bus of the same type serving Route E34B (9501/SJ7944), a bus of identical model (6834/VE6639) on this route and another bus of identical model (8033/SJ8393) on Route A10, resulting in at least 38 injuries. [42][43][44] Of these, 301/PM6822 was not repaired due to severe front-end damage and was written off early.
