The Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 9 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Shau Kei Wan and Shek O, via Tai Tam Road, Shek O Road and Cape D'Aguillar, and is the only public transport serving Shek O Road together with PLB Shau Kei Wan - Shek O Route.

To highlight the function of this route connecting with MTR Shau Kei Wan Station, the electronic destination sign of Shau Kei Wan direction displays the MTR logo at the same time.

History[]

Bus service to and from Shek O started to serve the public as early as in the 1920s. At that time, the The Hongkong Hotel Bus operated an un-numbered Hong Kong Hotel and Big Wave Bay Route, which was regarded as a hotel-only service and only operated a few times a day, and it was not included as one of the franchised routes in the district.

CMB Era[]

  • 16 April 1951: The China Motor Bus (CMB) operated Route 9 between Shau Kei Wan and Shek O. There were four daily departures from Shau Kei Wan at 07:30, 08:30, 13:00 and 18:00, and from Shek O at 08:00, 09:00, 13:30 and 18:30, with a fare of $0.7 per trip. [1]
  • 21 April 1951: Headways were enhanced from noon on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays during the swimming season, with the last bus of both directions extended by one hour. [2]
  • August 1951: In view of the large number of swimmers at Shek O, CMB instructed the route to start as soon as it was full and extended the last bus until the swimmers had entirely left and need not follow the scheduled timetable. [3]
  • 1 October 1951: The first bus time from Shau Kei Wan and Shek O were brought forward by one hour. [4]
  • 18 May 1953: CMB introduced half-fare concession for school children on rural routes, applicable to all areas not covered by the Student Monthly Pass, [5][6] but not applicable on holidays. [7]
  • 10 December 1953: The timetable was revised to include mainly one hourly departure daily. [8]
  • 29 September 1958: Due to the restoration of Nam On Street and Aldrich Street, the route was changed to terminate near tram terminus at Kam Wah Street, and the inbound and outbound termini were rerouted via Shau Kei Wan Main Street East. [9]
  • September 1961: The last buses from Shau Kei Wan and Shek O were delayed for 3 hours to 22:00 and 22:30 respectively.
  • 16 August 1970: Special departure between North Point and Shek O was introduced on every public holiday, departing from 07:25 - 08:29 at North Point and 19:30 - 22:30 at Shek O, with a fare of $1.0.[10]. The cancellation date of this special departure is unknown.
  • 1975: A special trip was introduced to operate between Shek O and Big Wave Bay, with three trips on Mondays to Saturdays and one trip every 30 to 60 minutes on holidays.
  • 24 August 1982: Shau Kei Wan terminus was relocated from the roadside stop on Nam On Lane to the newly built lay-by-shaped bus terminus in the new reclamation area.
  • 9 June 1996: Air-conditioned bus service was introduced.
  • 1997: In conjunction with the Shek O Road Improvement Project, the return journey was detoured via a section of Cape D'Aguilar Road near Tai Fung Au.
    • Rehabilitation works at Shek O Quarry commenced in January 1994. The section of Shek O Road near the quarry had to be re-aligned to straighten the road and shorten the journey by 600 metres, while the original sharp bend at Tai Fung Au was designated as part of Cape D'Aguilar Road and a roundabout was set up at the end of the road. The project was completed in 1997 [11], and to meet the needs of the residents of Hok Tsui and Nga Choi Hang villages, a detour via the section of the old Shek O Road which had already been designated as Hok Tsui Road was maintained for the round trips; some holiday trips were not diverted to Cape D'Aguillar Road if the terminus at Shek O was full.

NWFB era[]

  • 1 September 1998: Changed to be operated by New World First Bus (NWFB) following the End of CMB Franchised Bus Service.
  • 24 January 2000: Upgraded to full air-conditioned service with full usage of Dennis Trident 10.3m (33XX) air-conditioned buses. [12]
  • After January 2000: Rarely reverted from full air-conditioned to mixed service with two air-conditioned buses and two non-air-conditioned buses deployed in rotation, the latter by Leyland Victory II.
    • This was NWFB's response to Shek O residents' dissatisfaction with the high fares of air-conditioned buses ($6.2 at that time, $2 higher than that of non-air-conditioned buses) after the route was upgraded to a fully air-conditioned service.
  • 20 March 2000: The first bus time from Shek O was advanced to 06:00. [13]
  • End-August 2000: NWFB's last non-air-conditioned bus suitable for this route, the Leyland Victory II, was fully retired and officially replaced by a full air-conditioned service.
  • 4 December 2000: Departures at 20:00 and 20:20 from Mondays to Saturdays to Shek O were detoured via Big Wave Bay. [14]
  • 14 May 2001: Departures at 21:20, 22:00, 23:00 and 23:30 from Mondays to Saturdays to Shek O were detoured via Big Wave Bay. [15]

  • 1 July 2013: To tie in with NWFB's franchise extension, a new two-way section fare to Shan Tsui Court was introduced for Shek O direction; Octopus interchange concessions with Routes 2X and 720A were also introduced. [21]
  • 3 November 2013: Departures at 18:37 and 20:05 on Sundays and Public Holidays to Shek O were detoured via Big Wave Bay. [22]

Bus Deployments[]

The main type of buses used on this route is Enviro400/Euro V (70XX, 310XX/38XX, 315XX) double-decker buses; after severe weather of after being hit by severe tropicl cyclones, Enviro200 MMC 10.7m (2501-2505) single-decker buses will be used according to road conditions.

Due to the narrow roads on Tai Tam Road, Shek O Road and Big Wave Bay Road, this route is served only by the above models.

Bus Deployment Evolution History[]

Bus Deployment Evolution History of Citybus Route 9
  • 26 June 1970: Bus deployment changed from single-deckers to double-deckers, using Guy Arab V.
  • 1988-89: Gradually changed to use Leyland Victory II (LV).
  • 9 June 1996: Dennis Dart (DC) single-decker air-conditioned buses were introduced during holidays.
  • 21 January 2000: The extra short-bodied and low-height Dennis Trident 10.3-metre (3301-3360) buses were deployed, with the same 10.6-metre (16XX) buses occasionally deployed on high-traffic days; about half of the trips on this route were still operated by these buses before the Victory IIs were fully retired.
  • Late-August 2000: Entirely served by Dennis Tridents following the retirement of Leyland Victory IIs.
  • 2016: Due to the advancing age of the short-bodied and low-height version Dennis Trident (3301-3360), NWFB ordered 60 Enviro400 Euro Vs (3800-3859), which were 10.4 metres long and only 4.17 metres high, to replace the former. The vehicle was placed on this route from 24 April 2017 after completion of the test run.
  • Between mid-April and July 2019: In response to the Peak Tram development programme and to ensure that there are sufficient short-bodied low-height double-decker buses to meet the demand for travelling to and from the Peak, NWFB has leased some of its Enviro400s from Citybus to serve this route and Route 14. [27][28]
  • 2021: In view of the shortage of NWFB's short buses due to the huge holiday patronage, NWFB needs to borrow some of its Enviro400s from Citybus to serve this route.
    • 2 April (Easter and Ching Ming holidays). [29]
    • 1 May (labour Holiday).
    • 22 July: During summer holidays. [30]
    • 19 December: Free Ride Day.
  • 2023: Due to the massive passenger demans causing a shortage of NWFB's short-length buses, NWFB had to borrow Enviro400s from Citybus to operate on this route. [31] Following the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger, in addition to that Enviro400 Euro V low-height buses are prioritised on serving The Peak routes with height restrictions imposed, making that type of bus become major model on this route.

Ridership[]

Route 9 serves Shek O residents travelling to and from the urban area, as well as people travelling to and from Shek O for picnics and swimming. Although the route is subject to competition from public light buses, a large number of passengers take this route during weekends and holidays, and the queuing situation is frequent.

Even though the vehicle-wave strategy has been employed during holidays, a large number of passengers are still queuing up at the Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus, with the queue even occupying the neighbouring bus lay-bys. Therefore, during Sundays and public holidays, NWFB opened the reserve pit to the south of the station for parking of NWFB's vehicles, while the original lay-by was designated as a waiting area for passengers, and higher capacity vehicles are deployed to operate on this route in order to ease the passenger flow. However, this measure has further reduced the already congested parking space at the terminus, and other routes have to move their stops to accommodate this, which was slightly inconvenient.

In view of the overloading of the original stop, starting from the summer of 2017, the station at the Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus of this route has been temporarily relocated from the double lay-bys in the south, which have been in use for many years, to a lay-by on the west side of the road, near the entrance of Nam On Street (the original stop locations of Routes 19P and 85A), so as to make use of the space of the nearby sitting-out area of Nam On Street to accommodate a large number of passengers waiting for the buses during the summer holiday period. The adjustment was originally scheduled to end after the swimming season, but due to the favourable results, it has been retained as a permanent measure since then.

As a result of the temporary suspension of the Peak Tram, during weekends and holidays, Enviro400 Euro V low-body buses were given priority on the height-restricted Peak routes, and the normal height of Citybus' Enviro400 10.5 metres (7000-7059) was used as support. As many buses were deployed to The Peak routes, the fleet size of this route was unable to cope with the passenger demand brought about by the May Day Golden Week, and more than 600 people were stranded at the Shek O Bus Terminus.

Based on the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other information, the ridership of this route are as follows:

  • 1993 (CMB): The monthly passenger load was 98,173. [32]
  • 2006: On average, about 45 and 40 passenger trips were made at Cape D'Aguilar and Tai Long Wan respectively after the morning peak hour.
