The Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 8P is operated by Citybus. It runs between Siu Sai Wan (Island Resort) and Exhibition Centre Station, via Chai Wan (Yue Wan Estate), Island Eastern Corridor and Causeway Bay (Hennessy Road).

Different from the majority of other routes ending with P, Route 8P provides whole-day service. Coincidentally, the KMB route having the same route number also provides whole-day service as well.

History[]

  • 1 September 1998: Route 8P was introduced to operate between Siu Sai Wan and Wan Chai Ferry Pier, replacing part of Route 80 which was cancelled on the end of CMB's franchise, and at that time providing service only during weekday peak hours.
    • At that time, this route was positioned as a supplementary route to Route 8, thus having a P-suffix. [1] This route was equipped with non-air-conditioned fares, but non-air-conditioned buses would not be used under normal circumstances, and was in fact a pseudo-non-air-conditioned route. [2]
  • 19 October 1998: Upgraded to daily whole day two-way and full air-conditioned service. [3]
  • 18 May 1999: Octopus payment was accepted. [4]
  • 30 January 2000: Rerouted via new section of Chai Wan Road outside Chai Wan (East) Bus Terminus for Siu Sai Wan direction, omitting Wing Tai Road, Ka Yip Street and Sheung On Street. [5]
  • 26 August 2000: NWFB introduced interchange concessions between Routes 38 and 42 and Routes 2A, 2X, 8 and 8P, which was the first set of Octopus Interchange concessions by the company. [6]
  • 22 July 2001: Siu Sai Wan terminus was relocated to Island Resort. [7]
  • 20 August 2001: The original plan was to reroute via Fu Yee Road instead of Fullview Garden when heading towards Wan Chai Ferry Pier during morning peak hours on weekdays for a trial period of three months [8]. The plan was once withdrawn by the bus company [9] and was eventually changed to a permanent measure.
  • 17 May 2015: Wan Chai terminus was relocated to Wan Chai North Temporary Public Transport Interchange to tie in with the opening of Wan Chai Ferry Pier Bus Terminus as the construction site of Exhibition Station (later renamed Exhibition Centre Station) of the MTR Sha Tin to Central Link, and both directions were rerouted via Convention Avenue and Hung Hing Road; starting from the same date, some of the trips departing from Siu Sai Wan in the afternoon peak period from Mondays to Saturdays were changed to terminate at Causeway Bay (Hysan Place). [10]
    • A new stops was added at "Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre" on Fleming Road for Wan Chai North direction; whereas a new stop at "Wan Chai Ferry Pier" at Convention Avenue for Siu Sai Wan direction.
  • 1 June 2016: To tie in with the extension of Citybus Franchise I, Octopus interchange concessions with Citybus Routes 5B, 72, 72A, 96 and 592 were introduced. [11]
  • 25 June 2018: "Next Bus "Real-time arrival time enquiry service was added. [12]
  • 8 October 2019: The time slot rerouting via Siu Sai Wan Road "Fullview Garden" stop for Wan Chai North direction was advanced to start at 08:15 onwards. [13][14]
  • 14 May 2022: Terminus was relocated from Wan Chai North to the new Exhibition Centre Station Public Transport Interchange: [15][16][17]
    • The "Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre" stop at Fleming Road for Wan Chai direction was cancelled, whereas the "Wan Chai Ferry Pier" stop at Convention Avenue for Siu Sai Wan (Island Resort) was cancelled.
  • 1 July 2023: Changed to be operated by Citybus following the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger.

Bus Deployment Evolution History of Citybus Route 8P

This route used to be regularly served by Neoplan Centroliner 12 metres (60XX). Since the establishment of the Franchised Bus Low Emission Zone by the Government in December 2015, the model has been phased out in September 2015 as its emission standards failed to meet the statutory requirements.

The MAN A95 ND323F 12.8m demonstrator bus (6090/TZ9333), introduced by NWFB in 2015, made its maiden trip on this route in the evening of 6 April 2016, while the 2016-registered Enviro500 MMC 12.8-metre (6100/UM722) also made its maiden trip on this route.

Related Incidents[]

Fire Accidents[]

  • 21 March 2004: At about 7:00 a.m., a Neoplan Centroliner (60XX) heading for Wan Chai Ferry Pier suddenly emitted smoke from the rear of the bus when it was approaching the Island Eastern Corridor near North Point Ferry Pier. The bus captain put out the fire by using the on-board fire extinguisher, and there were no injuries. [18]
  • 16 November 2009: A Neoplan Centroliner (6023/JX1171) caught fire whilst travelling on this route, and was later recovered in August 2010.
  • 9 August 2018: At around 11:00am, a Wan Chai North-bound Dennis Trident (1214/KN4525) was approaching the bus stop at Wan Tsui Market on Chai Wan Road when smoke suddenly appeared from the rear of the vehicle and caught fire. Passengers on board were evacuated to a safe location and the bus driver used the on-board fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire. The bus driver also tried to extinguish the fire with the fire extinguisher on board. The fire was extinguished by the fire service on arrival and no one was injured. [19][20]

Traffic Accidents[]

  • 6 January 2014: At around 9:00 am, a Volvo Super Olympian (5039/JE4186) bound for Siu Sai Wan stopped at Hennessy Road when a fire engine suddenly arrived at the neighbouring lane, the captain braked and dodged, an elderly woman who was about to get off the vehicle lost her balance and crashed into the door of the vehicle, sustaining injuries to her face and back, and was sent to hospital for treatment. [21]
  • 1 July 2014: At around 5:00pm, during the 1 July march, a Siu Sai Wan-bound Dennis Trident (1094/HY2653) had its body accidentally scratched the bodywork of the vehicle with an iron horse at Yee Wo Street by a young man, and the Police later arrested him for suspected criminal damage. [22]
  • 16 May 2015: At around 9:00 pm, a Wan Chai Ferry Pier-bound Volvo Super Olympian was travelling along the Island Eastern Corridor when it reached the area opposite to the Shau Kei Wan Wholesale Fish Market, the right-hand middle wheel suddenly had a tyre blowout and the tyre flew off, rolled to the centre of the right-hand lane, and then rolled to the roadside kerb. The bus came to a stop opposite to Perfect Mount Garden and no one was injured. [23]

Passenger incidents[]

  • 12 February 2017: In order to tie in with the Standard Chartered Marathon, this route did not go through the Island Eastern Corridor that morning, but instead went through Shau Kei Wan Road and King's Road. At around 8:00am, a woman boarded a Wan Chai North bound Enviro500 MMC and suddenly squatted down at the front of the lower deck to defecate, but the driver, who was concentrating on driving at the time, failed to stop her in time. The woman got off the bus at Shau Kei Wan Road after the incident and the passengers inside the bus told the bus driver that there was no need to arrange passengers to take another bus. The bus driver then continued the journey and informed NWFB to arrange for the bus to return to the depot to clean up the mess. [24]

Others[]

  • 14 February 2017: the Development, Planning and Transport Committee of Wan Chai District Council discussed the pick-up/drop-off of this route at the Sogo Department Store bus stop [25][26]. NWFB issued a notice to bus captains on 15 February instructing that pick-up and drop-off must be at the bus stop area [27]. On 19 February, traffic police officers cited bus captains who failed to pick up and drop off passengers at the right stops, which made many captains angry, and thus they planned to work according to the rules [28][29]. The author, Wan Chai District Councillor Yolanda Ng Yuen-ting, became the target of public criticism, with many netizens leaving critical comments on her social networking sites. [30][31]

Criminal vandalism[]

  • 11 September 2018: A passenger boarded a bus outside Hysan Place in Causeway Bay for Wan Chai North and noticed that a sewing needle of about 4 cm in length was inserted into the edge of the opposite seat cushion, and notified the bus driver to report to the Police when the bus arrived at Wan Chai North.
