Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The New Territories Bus Route 793 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate and So Uk[Remark 1], via LOHAS Park, Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O Town Centre, Tiu Keng Leng, taking Tseung Kwan O Tunnel, Kwun Tong Bypass to/from Kowloon Bay Business Area, San Po Kong (Prince Edward Road East), Kowloon City, Argyle Street, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po.

Route 793 runs through all 5 districts in Kowloon [Remark 2], which is titled as "Kowloon East West Line" (九龍東西線).

History[]

Route reorganisation dividing into two services[]

In the 2022-2023 Bus Route Planning Programme, the Transport Department (TD) claimed that the then yet to be introduced NWFB Route 795X overlapped with some sections of Routes 796C and 796E, and therefore proposed to enhance the service of Route 795X by providing a whole-day express service to and from Tseung Kwan O Town Centre and the business areas in Yau Ma Tei, Mong Kok, and Cheung Sha Wan, and that Routes 796C and 796E would be merged into a new Route 793 to provide a whole-day service connecting Tseung Kwan O South and Kowloon Bay Business Area, with the same fare of $11.7 as that of Route 796E. The new bus route would have a two-way section fare from So Uk to Oscar By The Sea, so that passengers of the original section of Route 796C could still travel at the same fare.

Route 793 filled the gap of the lack of a whole-day bus route between LOHAS Park and Mong Kok, which is popular among members of the district. However, the new route overlapped the section between Tseung Kwan O and Kowloon Bay with routes 797, as well as GMB routes 110 and 110A, and some members queried that the supply of the relevant section of the route exceeded the demand. [1] Some local organisations even criticised the rationalisation plan for slowing down the journey between Tseung Kwan O and Sham Shui Po, reducing operational efficiency by charging two-way section fares, and failing to co-ordinate with KMB's proposed new route 298C, which was proposed at the same time, and called on NWFB to suspend the plan for the time being. [2] However, NWFB still insisted on implementing the reorganisation.

  • 21 August 2022: Routes 796C and 796E were merged to form a new Route 793[3][4], which is the last new whole-day route to be introduced before the merger of NWFB and Citybus franchised bus networks.

Repurposing the old route and upgrading to Trunk Route[]

In 2024, Citybus said it would continue to consolidate its routes, including merging short-haul routes into long-haul routes, actively promoting section fares, and focusing its resources on enhancing its "Trunk Routes" services. Route 793, which swallowed up Route 797M, was among one of them and titled "Kowloon East-West Line". [5]

Routes 793 and 797M shared overlapping sections[Remark 3], with the latter consistently experiencing low passenger volumes. The bus operator undertook integration measures, even restoring improved service along the original 797M route segments. Following Citybus's assumption of operations in early 2023, the two routes were merged as planned, resulting in the introduction of two-way section fares along this route, increased frequency of services via Pak Shing Kok Road to replace Route 797M. This route operates at a significantly higher frequency than the discontinued 797M service, with eastbound journeys within Tseung Kwan O offer section fares lower than the full fare charged by the 797M and covering Tiu Keng Leng, which was abandoned by Route 797M in 2010. In 2025, to coincide with the imminent completion of the Traditional Chinese Medicine facilities at Pak Shing Kok, this route operated via Pak Shing Kok Road throughout the day and the route within the industrial estate after departing from the terminus was additionally revised to penetrate several internal streets, matching the coverage of Route 796X and Route 797M before rerouting in 2010.

  • 1 July 2023: Changed to be operated by Citybus following the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger.
  • 25 September 2023: A new stop was added at "Choi Hung Estate" on Prince Edward Road East for Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate direction, and at the same time, with the following service adjustments also made at the same time in conjunction with the cancellation of Route 797M: [6][7]
    • Departures from Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate at 09:00 - 16:00 every Mondays to Saturdays and from So Uk at 08:00 - 15:00 every Mondays to Saturdays were detoured via Fire and Ambulance Services Academy;
    • A new $5.8 two-way section fare from Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate to Kin Ming Estate was introduced.
  • 18 December 2023: The first bus time from So Uk was advanced from 06:15 to 06:00 every Mondays to Saturdays. [8]
  • 13 January 2025: The first bus time from So Uk was advanced from 06:00 to 05:40 every Mondays to Fridays. [9]
  • 2025: In conjunction with the The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong and the Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute commencing operations by the end of the year:[10]
    • 24 November:[11][12]
      • All trips on both directions detoured via Pak Shing Kok Road;
      • So Uk bound journeys were rerouted via Chun Choi Street, Chun Ying Street, Chun Kwong Street, Chun Cheong Street and Chun Yat Street after Chun Wang Street to return to the original routing at Wan Po Road with new stops added at "Chun Choi Street", "Chun Ying Street" and "Advanced Manufacturing Centre", while the original stop at "Chun Cheong Street" was cancelled.
    • 9 December: Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate bound journeys additionally called at the stop outside The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong on Pak Shing Kok Road, while So Uk bound journeys additionally called at the stop opposite to The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong on Pak Shing Kok Road.[13]

Bus Deployments[]

This route is operated by 15 buses, with Volvo B9TL 12m (5200-5224), B8L_12_N and Enviro500/MMC 12m (5518-5582/5583-5599, 5601-5851, 515XX), Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (6100-6209) being the main vehicles.

Operations[]

In view of the remote location of the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate bus terminus and the inconvenient traffic conditions, most of the bus captains are arranged to pick up passengers from the Tiu Keng Leng Station for duty or meal breaks in their running orders. Bus captains who drive the last Tseung Kwan O-bound bus of this route before going off duty or having lunch still have to drive the buses of the urban-bound trips after arriving at Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate, and carry passengers along the way until they arrive at Tiu Keng Leng Station before another bus captain takes over the driving duties. Therefore, some of the So Uk bound trips may need to stop at Tiu Keng Leng Station for the bus driver to hand over the passengers, during which the passengers can stay on the bus.
