The New Territories Bus Route 792M is operated by Citybus. It runs between Tseung Kwan O Station and Sai Kung, via Sheung Tak, Tiu Keng Leng, Hang Hau (Po Ning Road, Hang Hau Road), Tai Po Tsai (HKUST), Ho Chung and Pak Sha Wan.

Both Sai Kung Town Centre and Tseung Kwan O New Town are situated within the Sai Kung District, but so far there is only one franchised bus route connecting the two places. The route is designed to provide the fastest way for passengers along Hiram's Highway and the HKUST to travel to and from MTR Tiu Keng Leng Station, connecting to the Tseung Kwan O Line and Kwun Tong Line.

This is also the franchised bus route in Sai Kung District with the highest fare.

History[]

Commencing Background[]

In 1999, NWFB was awarded a franchise for seven Tseung Kwan O South routes. In anticipation of the potential demand for feeder services between railway stations in Tseung Kwan O and the outskirts of Sai Kung upon the commissioning of the Tseung Kwan O Extension of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in 2002, NWFB proposed to the Government that it should operate an additional route between Tseung Kwan O South and Sai Kung.

Early Days of Commencement[]

Initially, Route 792 only operated three trips from Tiu Keng Leng to Sai Kung during morning peak hours on school days from Mondays to Saturdays, and one return trip from Sai Kung at the same time. In less than a month after its commencement, the number of trips from Choi Ming Court and Sai Kung has increased to four and three respectively, and a holiday service has been introduced to provide full day service from morning to evening on Sundays and public holidays, while the peak hour service is maintained on weekdays. Like other "Tseung Kwan O Routes in Kowloon" which are represented by animals, Route 792 was initially launched with bus body advertisements featuring octopuses to publicise the message "792 Expanding Tseung Kwan O Route, Good Morning! Sai Kung" (792拓展將軍澳路線,Good Morning!西貢).

  • 18 June 2001: Route 792 was put into service, making it the first franchised bus route of NWFB which operates only in the New Territories. It initially rang between Tiu Keng Leng (Choi Ming Court) and Sai Kung (Town Centre), with only three trips from Choi Ming Court and one trip from Sai Kung during the morning peak hours of school days from Mondays to Saturdays.[1][2]
  • 16 July 2001: The headways from Tseung Kwan O were increased to four (06:35, 06:50, 07:05 and 07:20) and that from Sai Kung were enhanced to three (07:15, 07:35 and 07:55).[3]
  • 22 July 2001: Holiday whole-day service was introduced.[3]
  • 12 November 2001:
    • The first bus time from Tiu Keng Leng (Choi Ming Court) was advanced every Mondays to Saturdays;
    • A new afternoon school hour headway from Mondays to Fridays (except school holidays), with one departure from each end.[4]
  • 18 November 2001: An additional stop outside Sheung Tak Shopping Centre at Tong Ming Street for Tiu King Leng (Choi Ming Court) direction.[5]
  • 10 July 2002: Buses were diverted via New Hiram's Highway, which was opened to traffic on that day, for Sai Kung (Town Centre) bound.[6]

Route Number Change, Connecting with the MTR[]

The MTR Tseung Kwan O Extension was scheduled to open on 18 August 2002. About a week before its opening, Route 792 moved its Tseung Kwan O terminus to the Tiu Keng Leng MTR Station Public Transport Interchange, and was renamed 792M on its opening day to demonstrate its feeder function to the MTR, and was upgraded to a daily whole-day service. With the opening of Po Yap Road, the route was extended in May 2003 to cover the area around Tseung Kwan O Centre and Bauhinia Garden. However this action made the route became too meandering, and the routing was therefore further simplified in July 2006.

  • 11 August 2002: Tseung Kwan O Terminus was relocated to Tiu Keng Leng MTR Station Public Transport Interchange.[7][8]
  • 18 August 2002: To tie in with the opening of the MTR Tseung Kwan O Line:[9][10][11]
    • Upgraded to provide whole-day daily service;
    • Numbering was changed to 792M;
    • Octopus interchange concessions with Routes 694, 796A, 796B, 796C and 796X were introduced;
    • Two new section fares from Tai Po Tsai Kau to Tiu Keng Leng MTR Station ($5.2) and from Wo Mei to Sai Kung (Town Centre) ($5.9) were added.
  • 27 October 2002: Octopus interchange concession with Route 796S was introduced.[12]
  • 22 December 2002: Both directions were detoured via University Road (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, HKUST).[13]
    • A new section fare from HKUST to Sai Kung (Town Centre) is $5.9 was added, while the original section fare from Tai Po Tsai Kau to Tiu Keng Leng MTR Station and from Wo Mei to Sai Kung (Town Centre) was reduced to $4.5.
  • 18 May 2003: Buses were diverted via a new section of Po Yap Road in and out of Tiu Keng Leng MTR Station to tie in with the opening of that road section:[14]
    • Buses towards Tiu Keng Leng MTR Station were rerouted via Tong Chun Street, Po Yap Road, Chui Ling Road and King Ling Road northbound, omitting Tong Tak Street, Tong Yin Street, Tong Ming Street westbound and King Ling Road southbound between Sheung Tak Shopping Centre to Choi Kwai House; original stops of "Yan Chai Hospital Wong Wah Sheung Secondary School", "Tseung Kwan O Catholic Primary School" and "Choi Fu House" were cancelled and replaced by "Buddhist Chi Lin Primary School", "Tseung Kwan O MTR Station (Opposite)" and "Park Central (Opposite)" stops;
    • Buses towards Sai Kung were diverted via Tong Chun Street, Po Yap Road and Po Hong Road (near Beverly Garden section), and stops at "Buddhist Chi Lin Primary School" and "Park Central" were added, and another stop at King Ling Road near Kin Ming Estate was also added.
  • 23 May 2004: In response to the traffic control measures in Sai Kung Town, the bus stop "Sai Kung Police Station" on Fuk Man Road would be omitted for Sai Kung on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays between 16:00 to 20:00.
  • 22 July 2006: Both directions were diverted via Po Yap Road, Po Hong Road, Tong Ming Street and Po Shun Road for the section between King Ling Road and Po Ning Road.[15]

Routing rationalisation and enhancing railway connections[]

This route has long faced competition from GMB Route 101M, which also connects to Tseung Kwan O Line stations and serves a similar catchment area. Although this route is convenient for railway passengers as it passes through both Tiu Keng Leng and Tseung Kwan O Stations, the interchange at Tiu Keng Leng Station could save passengers from travelling to Tseung Kwan O Station to take an additional Tseung Kwan O Line journey for interchange passengers. However, the detour via Bauhinia Garden and Sheung Tak was a circuitous and time-consuming journey, and the headways were not frequent enough, resulting in a gradual loss of patronage.

In view of this, NWFB proposed to rationalise the routing of this route between Tiu Keng Leng and Tseung Kwan O Town Centre in the 2012-2013 Bus Route Development Programme. It was proposed in the Programme that the Tseung Kwan O terminus of this route be changed to Tseung Kwan O Station, so that buses departing from Sai Kung to Hang Hau could reach Tiu Keng Leng Station via Po Shun Road before going to Sheung Tak and Tseung Kwan O Station, thus passengers interchanging with railways could reach Tiu Keng Leng as fast as possible, and the travelling time would be saved for about 7 minutes,[16] which was endorsed by the Sai Kung District Council (SKDC).

  • 23 July 2012: The intra-area routing between Tiu Keng Leng and Tseung Kwan O Town Centre was modified:[16]
    • Tseung Kwan O terminus was relocated from Tiu Keng Leng Station to Tseung Kwan O Station;
    • For Sai Kung bound, after leaving Tseung Kwan O Station, buses were rerouted via Tong Tak Street, Tong Chun Street, Tong Ming Street, Po Shun Road, Tsui Ling Road, King Ling Road, Tiu Keng Leng Station Public Transport Interchange, King Ling Road, Po Shun Road, and then return to the original routing at Po Ning Road;
    • For Tseung Kwan O Station, bsues were rerouted via Po Shun Road, King Ling Road, Chui Ling Road, Po Shun Road, Tong Ming Street, Po Hong Road, Po Yap Road and Tong Chun Street after reaching Po Ning Road.
    • In addition, the original plan for the Sai Kung bound was to divert to via the HKUST South Gate and not to use the HKUST North Gate Bus Terminus from the same day onwards. However, the HKUST made a clarification on the large print wall of LG1, stating that the exact commissioning date of the South Gate PTI was still subject to discussion with the Transport Department (TD). HKUST subsequently issued a public transport guidebook on 30 July of the same year, stating that it would continue to use the North Station for its round trips after the opening of the South Gate Station.[17]
  • 1 July 2013: Octopus interchange concession with Route 798 was introduced to tie in with the extension of NWFB's bus franchise.[18]
  • 12 February 2018: "Next Bus" Arrival Enquiry Service was introduced on this route.[19]
  • 24 August 2020: Octopus interchange concession with Route 798B was offered by Route 798A instead.
  • 1 July 2023: Changed to be operated by Citybus following the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger.
  • 27 January 2024: $1.0 (Adult Octopus) / $0.5 (Personal Octopus with "Student Status" added) interchange concession with MTR was was introduced with the designated interchange station being Tseung Kwan O Station or Tiu Keng Leng Station [20] until 31 December 2025.

Bus Deployments[]

This route is served by five double-decker buses. Common models include Enviro500/MMC 12-metre (5500-5582/5583-5599, 5601-5851) and Volvo B9TL 12-metre (5200-5224) buses.

Bus Deployment Evolution History[]

Bus Deployment Evolution History of Citybus Route 792M

In the era when the route number was still "792", this route used 10.6m and 12m versions of Dennis Trident (16XX, 10XX-11XX, 30XX) as the main force to break the restriction that only vehicles of 11 metres or less could be used along Hiram's Highway, Clear Water Bay Road (section between Silverstrand Beach and Tai Po Tsai) and Hang Hau Road. After the opening of the MTR Tseung Kwan O Line, the route numbering was changed to "792M", and NWFB had switched to use Volvo Super Olympian 12m (50XX-51XX) on this route in line with the rest of the Tseung Kwan O Routes in Kowloon, and then switched to Volvo Olympian (VA) as the main vehicle model in around 2006.

Since the late 2010s, Dennis Tridents (10XX-11XX) have resumed their role as the main vehicle of this route. Unfortunately, the performance of this model was in its twilight years, and its performance on climbs was far worse than in the past, especially when travelling on Hiram's Highway and Clear Water Bay Road, so the bus company issued an internal guideline in the summer of 2016, requesting frontline staff not to assign this model to this route as far as possible, and thus as a result, the 12m Enviro500 MMC (5583-5719) has gradually become the main vehicle for this route. The 11.3m version of the Facelift-bodied Enviro500 MMC (4052-4091) came out in mid-2017, and has become more and more common on this route.

The Enviro500 12m (5500-5582) and Volvo B9TL 12m (5200-5224) versions are also becoming common on this route from mid-2019, due to a shift in services (mostly from Routes 796X and 797M).

Ridership[]

Route 792M serves the function of connecting MTR to the urban area, but its patronage is only average during non-peak hours due to the use of the vehicle wave strategy by the faster New Territories GMB Route 101M, and the dilution of patronage at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) by the New Territories GMB Route 11M and the KMB Route 91M. However, the number of people using Tiu Keng Leng Station to connect to the railway during peak hours on weekdays, as well as the number of people travelling to Sai Kung for recreation and hiking during holidays, and the limited capacity of PLBs have attracted passengers to switch to this route during the relevant hours, thus resulting in a situation of full capacity or even fully loading a bus.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programme and other documents in previous years, the patronage of this route is as follows:

  • 2007: The utilisation rate of about 70% and average occupancy rate of about 20% throughout the day.
  • 2009: The utilisation rate was about 61% during the morning and afternoon peak periods on weekdays and the occupancy rate during the off-peak period was less than 15%.[21]
  • 2015: The occupancy rate was 61% towards Sai Kung during the morning peak period and 81% towards Tseung Kwan O Station during the afternoon peak period.[22]
  • 2020: The maximum occupancy rate during the morning peak period on weekdays is about 70%.[23]

Related Incidents[]

  • 29 November 2013: At around 10:00 am, a Sai Kung-bound Dennis Trident (1004/HV3406) crashed into the rear of a Toyota Coaster (GR4012) on Route 1A ahead at Hiram's Highway near Che Keng Tuk Road, injuring five people.[24]
  • 17 October 2014: at 3:00 pm, an Enviro500 (5551/RK5338) on its way to Sai Kung suddenly emitted smoke off Kwun Yum Temple, Pak Sha Wan, Hiram's Highway, with no injuries.[25]
  • 30 October 2014: at 1:15 pm, a Dennis Trident (1092/HY4071), which was on its way to Tseung Kwan O Station, crashed into the rear of a dump truck in front of it as it was exiting from the bus stop at "Nam Pin Wai" on Hiram's Highway; the glass window of the bus's upper deck was damaged and one person was injured.[26]
