The Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 780 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Chai Wan (East) and Central (Macau Ferry), via Chai Wan Hilly, Wan Chai (Gloucester Road) and Admiralty (Harcourt Road), which is branded as part of the "IEC Express" routes.

History[]

CMB era[]

  • 8 June 1984: CMB introduced Route 780 to tie in with the opening of the first phase of the Island Eastern Corridor (section between Victoria Park Road and Taikoo Shing) between Chai Wan (San Ha Street) and Central (Wing Wo Street), with access to and from the Island Eastern Corridor via Shau Kei Wan Road and Taikoo Shing, and operated during weekday peak hours and daytime on weekends and holidays only.
    • The numbering was initially proposed as "80X", but was objected by the Eastern District Council, and was later renamed as "80E"[1] and eventually launched as the new 700 series routes.
  • 22 June 1985: Chai Wan Terminus was relocated to Sheung On Street.
  • 26 July 1985: To tie in with the opening of the Island Eastern Corridor Phase II (Taikoo Shing to Shau Kei Wan section), a no-passing arrangement through Shau Kei Wan Road and Taikoo Shing was adopted during peak hours on Mondays to Fridays and Saturday mornings.
  • 3 May 1987: The following changes were implemented for trips on Sundays and Public Holidays to tie in with the conversion of some streets in Taikoo Shing to one-way streets:[2]
    • Rerouted via Tai Mou Avenue to Taikoo Wan Road for Central direction, no longer passing through Tai Fung Avenue;
    • Rerouted via Taikoo Wan Road, Tai Fung Avenue, Taikoo Shing Road, Tai Mou Avenue, Taikoo Wan Road, Tai Wing Avenue and Taikoo Shing Road after leaving Island Eastern Corridor for Chai Wan direction.
  • 8 October 1988: Trips from 07:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 to Chai Wan (Sheung On Street) were rerouted via Fleming Road, Convention Avenue, Hung Hing Road Flyover and Victoria Park Road after Gloucester Road, omitting the section of Gloucester Road opposite Fleming Road to Elizabeth House, with an additional intermediate stop just outside Wan Chai Ferry Pier. [2][3]
  • 1 April 1990: Eastern Terminus was relocated to Siu Sai Wan (South Wing).
  • October 1992: Air-conditioned bus service was introduced.
  • 23 October 1992: Upgraded to daily daytime service.
  • 5 December 1993: Rerouted via Wing Tai Road, Ka Yip Street and Sheung On Street for Siu Sai Wan direction.
  • 19 June 1994: Upgraded to daily whole-day service.
  • 7 August 1994: No longer served Shau Kei Wan Road and Taikoo Shing on holidays.

Citybus era[]

  • 1 September 1998: CMB's franchise was ended and the Transport Department directly transferred this route to Citybus for operation and upgraded it to a fully air-conditioned service; starting from the following day, the first bus time from Siu Sai Wan was advanced to 05:30 to cope with the passenger demand after the cessation of service of Route 80. [4]
  • 5 July 1999: To tie in with the opening of Route 789, Siu Sai Wan terminus was relocated from the south wing to the north wing.
  • 30 January 2000: No longer passed through Wing Tai Road, Ka Yip Street and Sheung On Street for Siu Sai Wan direction. [5]
  • 21 August 2000: Rerouted via Lambeth Walk, Chater Road, Jackson Road, Connaught Road Central and Jubilee Street after 10:00 am daily for Central direction. [6]
  • 22 July 2001: Siu Sai Wan terminus was relocated to Island Resort. [7]
  • 28 April 2003: Central terminus was relocated to Central Ferry Piers. [8]
  • 31 May 2004: Eastern Terminus was relocated back to Chai Wan (East), no longer serving Siu Sai Wan, and a new free Octopus interchange concession with Routes 8, 8P, 8X, 81, 82, 84M, 788 and 789 was introduced. [Remark 1][9][10]
  • 11 February 2006: Omitted Causeway Bay (Excelsior Hotel and Inner Gloucester Road) for Central Ferry Piers direction to tie in with the change of NWFB Route 8 to express route between Causeway Bay and Wan Chai; the affected section was replaced by Route 780P via Inner Gloucester Road. [11]
  • 5 March 2012: No longer passed through Harcourt Road Flyover for Chai Wan direction and rerouted via Harcourt Road at-grade carriageway with additional stop at "Central Government Offices". [12]
  • 1 June 2016: To tie in with the renewal of Citybus Franchise (I), Octopus interchange concessions with Routes 5X, 70 and NWFB Routes 18, 18P and 590 were introduced. [13]
  • 15 December 2017: "Next Bus" Arrival Time Inquiry Service was introduced on this route. [14]
