Ridership[]
Route 75 runs through the Aberdeen Tunnel, which is more direct than Route 71 which runs through Pok Fu Lam. However, after the opening of the MTR South Island Line (SIL), many Wong Chuk Hang residents switched to travelling to Admiralty and Central by rail, resulting in a decline in the route's patronage. As of 2017, the number of passengers on this route has decreased by about 40% compared to before the opening of the SIL;[22] and by 2022, the decline was close to 70%.
According to the Bus Route Planning Programme and other information, the patronage of this route is as follows:
- 1993 (CMB): There was a number of 262,580 passengers recorded per month. [23]
- 2014: The average patronage rate was 65% during peak hours and 29% during off-peak hours. [24]
- 2017: The average occupancy rate at the point of highest patronage during the busiest half-hour of the peak period was 87.2% before the opening of the MTR South Island Line, and 49.9% after the opening of the line, representing a drop of 36.1% in patronage compared to the pre-opening period [25]; the average occupancy rate during the busiest hour in the off-peak period was about 41%, and that for the busiest half-hour in the peak period was 65%. [26]
- 2020: The patronage rates of 54% and 62% were recorded for the busiest hour in the Sham Wan direction and the Central direction respectively, and 13-24% and 4-24% for the off-peak period respectively. [27]
- 2021: The patronage rate during the busiest hour is 61%.
- 2023: The patronage rate during the busiest hour is 53%, among which the average patronage rate during off-peak hours is only about 15% (Central bound) and 14% (Sham Wan bound), and the patronage rate during the lowest hour is even less than 3%.
Related Incidents[]
- 22 January 2010: A Central-bound Volvo Olympian (459/GM6398) stopped at a pedestrian crossing on Queensway due to a traffic congestion in front of it. A woman, who was suspected to have an obstructed view while crossing the road, was hit by a fast-approaching lorry and died after being admitted to hospital. [28][29]
