The Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 72A is operated by Citybus. It runs between Sham Wan and Causeway Bay (Moreton Terrace), passing through Wong Chuk Hang and Aberdeen Tunnel.
History[]
- 17 May 1982: China Motor Bus (CMB) commenced Route 72A, running between Wong Chuk Hang Sun Tsuen and Causeway Bay (Moreton Terrace). At that time it provided service only during the morning peak hours on weekdays, replacing services of Route 72 in Wong Chuk Hang Sun Tsuen during the weekday morning peak hours.
- 25 October 1983: Moreton Terrace bus terminus was moved from Causeway Bay (Moreton Terrace) roadside to the newly completed parallel platform bus terminus.
- 1 September 1993: The route was taken over by Citybus, making it one of the 28 bus routes (Network 26) that the company took over from CMB for the first time;
- upgraded to full-day service on weekdays and remained no service on holidays.
- 3 January 1994: Upgraded to daily and whole-day services, while some departures on Saturdays and holidays detoured via Ocean Park, fully replacing the service of Route 72B.
- June 1998: As Nam Long Shan Road was changed to one-way southbound, buses towards Wong Chuk Hang, were diverted to Heung Yip Road and Police School Road after Wong Chuk Hang Road.
- 28 January, 2002: A special service was added during the morning peak hour from Sham Wan (Broadview Court) to Causeway Bay (Moreton Terrace) one-way to facilitate with the start of the occupationof Broadview Court. [1]
- 14 July, 2002: Diverted to Nam Long Shan Road for Wong Chuk Hang direction instead of Police School Road to facilitate the restoration of two-way traffic on Nam Long Shan Road.[2]
- 29 July 2002: The following changes were implemented to accommodate the full occupancy of Broadview Court:[3][4]
- 27 October 2012: In order to cooperate with the MTR South Island Line project, buses towards Sham Wan were diverted to Nam Long Shan Road via Nam Long Shan Road and Heung Yip Road from 2 p.m. and return to Nam Long Shan Road, and the intermediate stop at "Nam Long Shan Road Cooked Food Market" was discontinued. station; buses towards Causeway Bay were diverted via Nam Long Shan Road and Heung Yip Road and return to original routing at Nam Long Shan Road.
- 25 January 2014: All departures no longer detoured via Ocean Park.
- Mid-February 2015: Due to the completion of the Nam Long Shan Road project, both directions no longer detour through a section of Heung Yip Road near Nam Long Shan Road.
- 1 June 2016: In conjunction with the renewal of Citybus franchise, Octopus interchange discounts with NWFB Routes 2X, 8 and 8P were introduced.
- 28 December, 2016:In conjunction with the opening of the South Island Line, the "Nam Long Shan Road Cooked Food Market" stop for Sham Wan direction was resumed.
- 15 December 2017: "Next Bus" Arrival Time Inquiry Service was introduced on this route.[5]
- 30 September 2018: Due to the closure of Wong Chuk Hang Temporary Bus Terminus, buses would omit the stop and were diverted via the u-turn at Nam Long Shan Road Bus Terminus then go north on Nam Long Shan Road, and called additionally at "Chan Pak Sha School" stop.[6][7]
- 1 August 2019: Buses towards Causeway Bay no longer called at "Chan Pak Sha School" stop on Nam Long Shan Road and replaced by Nam Long Shan Road Bus Terminus.[8]
- 11 September 2023: In conjunction with the reduction of services of Route 75:[9][10]
- The first departure time of the day in the early morning direction from Sham Wan and Causeway Bay (Moreton Terrace) were advanced to 05:10 and 05:50 respectively;
- Interchange concessions with Route N90 were introduced.

- Children under 12 years old will receive a 50% concession; passengers benefiting from the Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Disabled Persons will receive a 50% concession on the second journey fare The concessioned fare for the second journey is the lower of the above second-trip fare (half concession for seniors or qualified persons with disabilities under 12 years old) or $2.0, so some interchange combinations may not have interchange concessions in disguise.
- This interchange concession is only valid for boarding before Aberdeen Tunnel on the first journey and interchangering to a bus route in the same direction, and is not applicable to the same route.
- Some routes are only operated during peak hours, so some route combinations may not be able to complete interchanges within the designated time.

Ridership[]
The main source of passengers for this route is from Wong Chuk Hang to and from Causeway Bay. However, the number of passengers on this route has been very low since the opening of the MTR South Island Line.
According to the information in the Bus Route Planning Programme and related documents over the years, the passenger capacity of this route is as follows:
- February 1993 (CMB): A number of 30,157 passengers were recorded monthly.[11]
- 2014: The average occupancy rate during peak hours was 58%, while the average occupancy rate during non-peak hours is 26%.
- February 2017: The average passenger usage at the highest loading point during the busiest half-hour was 84.7% before the opening of the MTR South Island Line and 52.2% after the opening. The passenger volume change recorded a 35.5% decrease.[13]
Related Incidents[]
- 17 June, 2007: At around 1pm, a Volvo Olympian (9003/HT5882) heading towards Causeway Bay collided with two taxis and a private car at the exit of the Aberdeen Tunnel. Two people in the private car were injured.
