The Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 720 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Grand Promenade[Remark 2] and Central (Macau Ferry) via Aldrich Bay, Shau Kei Wan, Taikoo Shing,[Remark 3] and runs express between Wan Chai North (Gloucester Road), Central and Sheung Wan via Island Eastern Corridor.

Although this route starts and ends at the same termini as Route 2, the latter is a trunk route and the service targets are quite different.

History[]

CMB Era[]

  • 8 June 1984: CMB introduced Route 720 to tie in with the opening of the first phase of the Island Eastern Corridor (from Victoria Park Road to Taikoo Shing), which ran between Shau Kei Wan and Central (Queen Victoria Street) via Taikoo Shing, with service only during the morning and afternoon peak hours from Monday to Friday and from noon to evening on Saturdays.
    • This route was modified from Route 20M, which was originally planned to run along King's Road near Healthy Street Central towards the Island Eastern Corridor; when it came into service, it was changed to run via Taikoo Shing to the Island Eastern Corridor without going through Quarry Bay.
  • 20 November 1985: Detour via Hennessy Road, Fenwick Street and Lockhart Road towards Shau Kei Wan to tie in with local road works. The measure was changed to a regular route in the late 1980s.
  • 20 September 1986: To tie in with the reconstruction of Harcourt Road Flyover, the northbound slip road of Cotton Tree Drive could not turn left into Connaught Road Central and was rerouted via Lambeth Walk and Murray Road to Connaught Road Central for Central direction.[1]
  • Early 1987: Divert directly to the Island Eastern Corridor at Sai Wan Ho, no longer observing Taikoo Shing.
  • 8 October 1988: Divert via Fleming Road, Convention Avenue, Hung Hing Road Flyover and Victoria Park Road after Gloucester Road for Shau Kei Wan direction between 07:00 and 10:00 and 16:00 and 19:00, and omit Gloucester Road between Fleming Road and Elizabeth House, with additional intermediate stop at Wan Chai Ferry Pier.[2][3] In the following year, all departures were diverted via Fleming Road and Hung Hing Road and the intermediate stop outside Wan Chai Sports Ground at Gloucester Road was cancelled.
  • 1990: Central terminus was moved to Gilman Street.
  • 2 October 1993: Intermediate stops at Causeway Bay were cancelled.
  • 16 April 1997: Divert via Harcourt Road during morning peak hours when heading towards Shau Kei Wan.

NWFB Era[]

  • 1 September 1998: CMB's franchise was ended and was replaced by New World First Bus (NWFB). With effect from the same day, a special morning service from Taikoo Shing to Central in one direction was introduced to replace Route 721 which ceased operation on the same day.
  • 19 October 1998: Special morning service from Taikoo Shing was added as a return service and operated as a circular route, and the service hours of Saturday departures from Central via Taikoo Shing was extended to 11:44 - 19:22.[4]
  • 29 March 1999: Departures via Taikoo Shing was upgraded to daily whole-day service except peak hours and upgraded to full air-conditioned service (initially still dispatching non-air-conditioned buses such as MCW Metrobus), replacing the service of Route 20.[5]
  • 4 March 2001: Route was extended from Shau Kei Wan to Aldrich Bay (stop set up at Oi Yin Street) to tie in with the gradual occupation of public housing estates in the Aldrich Bay reclamation area.[6]
  • 9 June 2002: Aldrich Bay terminus was relocated from Oi Yin Street to Oi Tak Street Temporary Bus Terminus.[7]
  • 10 June 2002:[8]
    • Daytime departures from Mondays to Saturdays no longer observed Admiralty, and was replaced by Route 720A (Aldrich Bay ↺ Admiralty) which was split from this route;
    • Special departures to and from Taikoo Shing and Central were assigned as Route 720P.
  • 23 February 2004:[9]
    • Except morning departure on weekdays, all departures were extended from Central (Gilman Street) to Central (Macau Ferry);
    • Morning departures were also changed to circular operation, and the stop at Central (Gilman Street) was changed to circular point.
  • 25 April 2005: Interchange concession with Route 15 was introduced to tie in with the cancellation of Route 515.[10]
  • 24 June 2006: Terminus was relocated from Aldrich Bay (Oi Tak Street) to Sai Wan Ho (Grand Promenade) Public Transport Interchange.[11][12]
  • May 2010: NWFB standardised the colour of its Hong Kong Island routes from the original white letters on green background to white letters on purple background for ordinary routes.
  • 14 July 2013: Additional stop was added at Admiralty Centre (westbound) and Central Government Offices (eastbound) on weekdays after AM peak to PM peak to tie in with the service reduction of Route 720A.[13]
  • 6 August 2017: The original $1.0 second trip interchange concessions with Routes 2A, 77 and 99 to Yiu Tung Estate was upgraded to free, and free interchange concession with Route 722 was added.[14]
  • 31 August 2018: "Next Bus" Arrival Enquiry service was introduced.[15]
  • 19 September 2022:[16][17]
    • Circular return/terminal point of Central-bound AM Peak trips changed to Connaught Road Central "Wing Wo Street" stop; divert via Man Kat Street for turning back to Connaught Road Central eastbound, omit Gilman Street and Des Voeux Road Central for Grand Promenade direction, and stops were added at Admiralty:
    • Stops "China Insurance Group Building" on Gilman Street and "Douglas Street" on Des Voeux Road Central were cancelled, and replaced by "Central Government Offices" stop on Harcourt Road.
    • Circular departures from Grand Promenade observed Harcourt Road "Admiralty Centre" stop on Saturdays.
  • 1 July 2023: Changed to be operated by Citybus following the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger.

Bus Deployments[]

This route is served by 13 double-decerk buses, mainly Enviro500 MMC Facelift 12.8m (6100-6209), with some departures served by Enviro500/MMC 12m (5518-5582/5583-5599, 5601-5839, 5844, 5846, 5848) and Volvo B9TL 12m (5200-5224) double-decker buses.

Bus Deployment Evolution History[]

In the CMB era, Route 720 was mainly run by Daimler Fleetline (LF, XF) and MCW Metrobus 11.45m (MB).

When NWFB took over this route, the main vehicles were the Dennis Trident 12m (10XX-11XX, 30XX). The Volvo Super Olympian 12m (5001-5103) and Neoplan Centroliner 12m (6001-6030) buses had also ran this route commonly after joining NWFB.

Since 2008, Enviro500 12m (5500-5582) has been added to this route. With the implementation of the Low Emission Zone for franchised buses, the original Neoplan Centroliner (6001-6030) was replaced by the Enviro500 MMC 12m (5583-5719).

The Enviro500 MMC Facelift 12.8m (6100-6197), purchased by NWFB in 2016, has been added to this route since April 2017.

Ridership[]

This route provides services for residents of Aldrich Bay, Shau Kei Wan, Sai Wan Ho and Taikoo Shing to and from Wan Chai North, Admiralty and Central. Although there is competition from MTR along the route, due to the huge demand for the route and the cheaper fares than MTR, the patronage is always high and the buses are often full during peak hours.

Information from previous Bus Route Planning Programmes (BRPP) and related documents shows that this route carries the following passengers:

  • February 1993 (CMB): The monthly patronage at that time was 114,544.[18]
  • 2012:
    • The occupancy rate was 65-100% (from Grand Promenade) and 9-19% (from Central) in the morning peak period respectively;
    • The occupancy rate was 34-62% (from Sai Wan Ho) and 59-82% (from Central) during the afternoon peak period.
  • 2014:
    • The occupancy rate was 56-81% (from Sai Wan Ho) and 10-14% (from Central) in the morning peak period respectively;
    • The average occupancy rate between 9am and 10am (overlapping with the 720P line) is 44% (from Sai Wan Ho) and 14% (from Central).

2022: The occupancy rate was 79% during the busiest hour.

Related Incidents[]

Traffic Accidents[]

  • 7 April 1999: Two Dennis Tridents (3014/HY3792 and 1084/HY2249 respectively) parked at Gilman Street were crushed by a scaffolding of about 4,000 square metres collapsed from the external wall of the opposite China Insurance Group Building, injuring a male passer-by.[19]

Bus on Fire[]

  • 21 April 1999: When a Shau Kei Wan-bound Dennis Trident (30004/HX5101) was about to leave the stop after boarding at Admiralty MTR Station, the bus captain noticed that the driver's seat circuit board was overheating, causing smoke and sparks. The fire was eventually extinguished by firemen. The bus captain and two station staff were hospitalised after suffering from smoke inhalation. Even though 3004/HX5101 was successfully repaired and returned to service until it was retired from service, Dennis Specialist Vehicles provided a demonstrator bus (3601/JT480, retired) to NWFB as compensation for the cost of repair and replacement parts due to the error in the design of Tridents[20]

Traffic Accidents[]

  • 27 June 2005: At around 8am, a Central-bound Neoplan Centroliner (6006/JU2138) was travelling along the Island Eastern Corridor when it failed to stop and crashed into the rear of a seven-passenger vehicle that had stopped in a minor collision in front of it。 The seven-passenger vehicle then ran forward and struck the then Hong Kong Island Regional Operations Superintendent Pang Shu Hung (彭樹雄, now General Manager of the KMB depot) and the other foreign driver, who were discussing compensation, and then crashed into another private car. Pang was injured with his skull burst after a ten-metre flight, and the foreign man fell to the ground with injuries, while no one on the bus was injured.[21] Three years after the accident, Pang filed a lawsuit against the bus driver and NWFB for damages.[22]
  • 7 January 2015: At around 7am, a Central-bound Dennis Trident (3041/JA2047) collided with a taxi while turning right onto Tai Hong Street at Shau Kei Wan Road. Three people were injured and the taxi driver was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.[23]
  • 28 May 2015: At around 9am, a Central-bound Enviro500 (5532/PU6554) crashed into a bamboo lorry carrying sheds in front of it on Connaught Road Central near Chater House, piercing the upper deck near the road sign with a bamboo branch and sending a male passenger to hospital with foot injuries.[24]
  • 1 January 2020: At around 11:00am, an Enviro500 MMC (5683/TZ5369) heading towards Grand Promenade collided with a taxi and a private car on the Island Eastern Corridor eastbound near Tong Shui Road, causing serious damage to the front end of the bus and injuring 12 people.[25][26]
