3 January 2006: Route 702A entered service, which departed at 07:10 on Monday to Friday school days from Aquamarine to Pak Tin Estate via Nam Cheong Station, Castle Peak Road and Nam Cheong Street.[1]
4 September 2006: New afternoon after-school service was introduced, departing at 15:40 from Pak Tin Estate to Hoi Lai Estate via Nam Cheong Street, Un Chau Street and Yen Chow Street.[2]
18 June 2007: Afternoon services to Hoi Lai Estate were added to 2 trips (15:40, 16:00).[3]
17 September 2007: The 16:00 departure from Hoi Lai Estate was changed to depart at 16:10.
20 October 2008: Morning service to Pak Tin was added to 2 trips (07:10, 07:20).[4]
Although the Transport Department had repeatedly discussed with New World First Bus (NWFB) about increasing the number of trips during the morning school hours, the other side refused on the ground of resource constraints, which led to a letter from the Traffic and Housing Committee of the Sham Shui Po District Council to the Transport and Housing Bureau on 7 August 2008, and a letter from the Administration in reply to the Committee on 5 September, NWFB even implemented the extra trips immediately afterwards.[5]
29 September 2012: Rerouted via Sham Mong Road, Tonkin Street West, Lin Cheung Road, Yen Chow Street West and Sham Mong Road (westbound) after departing from Aquamarine with the permanent closure of Nam Cheong Station Bus Terminus. The en-route stop originally located inside Nam Cheong Station Public Transport Interchange was relocated to Sham Mong Road outside MTR Nam Cheong Station.[6]
22 September 2015: Pak Tin Bus Terminus was permanently closed due to the reconstruction works at Pak Tin Estate and the following arrangements were implemented:[7][8]
Thee terminus was relocated to the temporary terminus at "Block 9, Pak Tin Estate" stop;
The afternoon trips to Hoi Lai Estate was rerouted via westbound Pak Wan Street, Wai Chi Street, Wai Lun Street before returning to the original routing at westbound Nam Cheong Street. The stops at "Chak Tin House Pak Tin Estate", "Wan Tin House Pak Tin Estate" and "Wong Tai Shan Memorial College" were cancelled and new stops were added at "Lai Tin House Pak Tin Estate" and "Mei Ying House Shek Kip Mei Estate".
15 December 2017: "Next Bus" Arrival Time Inquiry Service was introduced on this route.[9]
22 June 2020: Afternoon services were changed to depart from Hoi Ying Estate, which ran through Lai Ying Street, Hing Wah Street West, roundabout, Hing Wah Street West, Sham Shing Road before returning to the original route at Sham Mong Road:[10][11]
New stops were added at "NWFB West Kowloon Depot" and "Aquamarine" on Hing Wah Street West as well as "Banyan Garden";
All departure times were advanced by 10 minutes due to the extension of journey, with the new departure times being 07:00 and 07:10.
27 July 2020: The afternoon after-school return service was cancelled and replaced by new route 702B. However, due to the school holidays, the last service date of the return service was 10 July 2020.[12][13]
23 January 2022: Pak Tin terminus was relocated to Pak Tin (Pak Wan Street) Public Transport Interchange.[14][15]

This route provides "Next Bus" Arrival Time Enquiry Service.
Half-fare for children aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above; the remainder of the fare after half-fare will be counted as 10 cents.
Elderly persons aged 65 or above using Senior Octopus Cards or Personalised Octopus cards, Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 using JoyYou Card, and eligible persons with disabilities using Personalised Octopus cards with "Persons with Disabilities Status" can enjoy a flat fare of $2.0 per journey under the $2 Concessionary Fare. If the concessionary fare for eligible persons with disabilities aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above is less than $2.0 after a 50% discount from the regular fare, the beneficiary is only required to pay the original concessionary fare; if the original full fare for Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 or eligible persons with disabilities is already less than $2.0, the beneficiary is also only required to pay the original full fare.
Passengers are required to tender exact fare by cash or by Octopus card when boarding. No exact change will be given.
Passengers may also use AlipayHK "EasyGo", Alipay, QuickPass, BoC Pay "RideCode", WeChat Pay HK or WeChat "Ride Code", Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay cards with inductive payment capabilities, as well as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Huawei Pay mobile payment platforms for fare payment. Passengers using the above payment method can only enjoy the interchange concessions with other Citybus solely-operated routes or the Citybus departures of the jointly-operated routes, and cannot enjoy the "Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme" nor the "Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities".

According to Bus Route Planning Programmes and District Council documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:
2019: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 87%.
2020: The first bus had a patronage of 70-80%, while the last bus had a patronage of about 50-60%. District Councillors complained that the buses were often fully loaded by the time they reached Fu Cheong Estate; however, the representative of NWFB considered that the patronage figures reflected that the buses were still able to carry passengers at Fu Cheong Estate, but agreed that the patronage of the two trips was not evenly distributed, and that they would try to adjust the frequency of the trips.[16]
