Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The New Territories Bus Route 587 is one of the "Ma On Shan - Sai Sha Network" routes operated by Citybus. It runs between GO PARK Sai Sha and Tsim Sha Tsui (Mody Road), which operates via Ma On Shan Bypass and Sha Lek Highway first towards Tai Wai where it makes stops, before proceeding via Tsing Sha Highway and Lin Cheung Road to and from Kowloon Station Commercial and Residential Area (→)/Yau Ma Tei (←). It provides outbound and inbound services only during morning and evening peak hours on Mondays to Fridays respectively.

History[]

Commencing background[]

To support housing development in the Shap Sze Heung area, the Transport Department proposed five new bus routes in the 2023-2024 Bus Route Planning Programme. One of these would operate between Tsim Sha Tsui East (Mody Road), which would operate via Tsing Sha Highway to and from Kowloon Station Commercial and Residential Area and Jordan with 4 trips outbound and inbound during morning and evening peak hours respectively, which would also facilitate residents to interchange to various districts at Tsing Sha Highway Bus-Bus Interchange and Western Harbour Crossing Bus-Bus Interchange.[1] District councillors anticipate that four return services on this route will meet residents' needs. Local organisations note that the plan does not include a cross-harbour route, instead adopting the interchange model used on KMB Route 280X where passengers change to Western Harbour Crossing routes at Nga Cheung Road. This arrangement is only suitable for southbound journeys to Hong Kong Island, as northbound passengers cannot reasonably walk to transfer points. They argue that routes serving Kowloon indirectly cater to cross-harbour passenger demand in an impractical manner.[2][3]

In September 2023, the Transport Department indicated that Citybus won the tender for all five new routes[4], with this route being numbered "587". Upon the route's inauguration, in anticipation of the imminent completion of the Central Kowloon Bypass, services towards Shap Sze Heung would proceed directly via Jordan Road and Lin Cheung Road after Shanghai Street, returning to the original route without travelling along the previously planned Kansu Street, Yan Cheung Road, Hoi Wang Road and Hoi Po Road.
