The New Territories Bus Route 56 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Tuen Mun (Ching Tin and Wo Tin) and Sheung Shui (Tin Ping Estate), via Kin Sang Estate, Siu Hong, Yuen Long Highway, San Tin Highway, Fanling Highway and MTR Sheung Shui Station.
The "Northern Link" Route 56 operates on Mondays to Fridays during daytime and evening off-peak hours, and on Saturdays and public holidays on a whole-day basis, and is served by a branch route 56A with a wider coverage during peak hours on weekdays.

Commencing background[]
To facilitate the future population growth in Area 54 of Tuen Mun, the Transport Department proposed in the 2019-2020 Bus Route Planning Programme to commence 6 new bus routes terminating in the area, with one of them running towards Sheung Shui (Tin Ping Estate), taking Yuen Long Highway, San Tin Highway, Fanling Highway between Siu Hong in Tuen Mun and MTR Sheung Shui Station.
The Transport Department announced on 3 August 2021 that the operating rights for all 6 new Tuen Mun Area 54 bus routes were won by Citybus,[2] with this route being numbered 56. TD revised the proposal before the commencement to introduce return trip services during PM peak hours.[3]
Route Change History[]
- 18 July 2022: Route 56 was put into service with one trip each way at that time. [4][5]
- 26 September 2022: Headways were increased to three trips each way, departing from Tuen Mun at 07:00, 07:55 and 08:40 and from Sheung Shui at 18:00, 18:55 and 19:30. [6][7]
- 21 November 2022: Headways were increased to four return trips each way, departing from Tuen Mun at 07:00, 07:20, 07:55 and 08:40, and from Sheung Shui at 18:00, 18:30, 18:55 and 19:30.[8][9]
- 20 February 2023: A $1.0 Adult Octopus interchange concession with MTR was introduced, with the designated station being Sheung Shui Station. [10]
- 6 November 2023: The service time was changed, with the service time of trips from Tuen Mun being 09:15 to 14:45 and that from Sheung Shui being 09:30 to 17:00, and the original departures were changed to be provided by Route 56A which extended service times on the same day. [11][12]

- Rerouted via Tsun Wen Road for both directions and the Tuen Mun-bound section fare originally effective from Ching Tin Estate was changed to Wo Tin Estate;
- Departures from Tuen Mun every Mondays to Fridays are 5 minutes earlier and 5 minutes later than the first and last buses of non-peak hours in both directions, and new services will be provided in the evenings of Mondays to Fridays and whole days of Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays:
- Departures from Tuen Mun on Mondays to Fridays were from 09:10 to 14:50 and 18:10 to 20:10, and that on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 06:30 to 20:10;
- Departures from Sheung Shui were 09:25 to 17:05 and 19:55 to 21:45 on Mondays to Fridays, and 06:45 to 21:45 on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.
- A new interchange concession with Route B3A was introduced.

This route is served by four double-decker buses; as the tender specifies that this route must be served by buses having emission standards of of Euro VI or above with dual wheelchair spaces, except in unforeseen circumstances or in the event of a bus shortage, it must be served by Enviro500 MMC 12m (8547-8567) equipped with an additional wheelchair parking area capable of carrying two wheelchair-bound passengers at the same time.
