Due to the modification works of the bus terminus, during the period from 25 March 2024 to the completion of the works, Route 50 to Tuen Mun (Ching Tin and Wo Tin) will be changed to terminate at Hing Kwai Street "Wo Tin Estate" stop as the last stop, and will not return to Ching Tin Estate. [1]

The New Territories Bus Route 50 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Tuen Mun (Ching Tin and Wo Tin) and Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon Station), serving Siu Hong, Hung Kiu, Mei Foo, Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei and Tsim Sha Tsui and passing through Tuen Mun Road, Tsuen Wan Road and West Kowloon Corridor.

The "Tuen Mun Line" Route 50 is currently the sole daily route connecting Tuen Mun Area 54 and Urban Kowloon.

History[]

Commencement Background[]

To facilitate the future population growth in Area 54 of Tuen Mun, the Transport Department proposed in the 2019-2020 Bus Route Planning Programme to commence 6 new bus routes terminating in the area, with one of them running one-way towards Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon Station), taking Siu Hong, Hung Kiu, Tuen Mun Road, Tsuen Wan Road and West Kowloon Corridor towards Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei and Tsim Sha Tsui, providing service only during Monday to Friday AM peak hours.

The Transport Department announced on 3 August 2021 that the operating rights for all 6 new Tuen Mun Area 54 bus routes were won by Citybus,[2] with this route being numbered 50. TD revised the proposal before the commencement to introduce return trip services during PM peak hours.[3]

Route change history[]

  • 18 July 2022: Route 50 commenced service.[4][5]
  • 26 September 2022: Round trip headways were enhanced to 4 each direction, with departure times from Ching Tin at 07:15, 07:35, 07:55 and 08:25, and from Kowloon Station at 18:00, 18:20, 18:40 and 19:10.[6][7]
  • 21 November 2022: Free interchange concesions with Routes E21B and E21D were introduced.[8]
  • 5 November 2023: Services on this route were enhanced in the following ways: [9][10]
    • Extended service hours from Monday to Friday and added services on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays:
      • The service time of departures from Tuen Mun is from 06:00 to 10:45 from Monday to Friday, and the service time of the departures from Tuen Mun on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays is from 07:00 to 14:00;
      • The service time of departures from Kowloon Station from Monday to Friday is from 16:00 to 23:15, and the service time of departures from Kowloon Station on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays is from 14:00 to 00:00;
    • A new interchange concession with Route 795X was introduced.
  • 28 July 2024: [11][12]
    • Buses to Kowloon Station called additionally at "Mei Foo" on Cheung Sha Wan Road, with a new section fare starting from this stop;
    • The round-trip service hours have been extended, with the daily service hours from Tuen Mun being 06:00 to 17:00, and that from Kowloon Station being 12:00 to 00:00.

Fare Remarks
  • Half-fare for children aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above; the remainder of the fare after half-fare will be counted as 10 cents.
  • Elderly persons aged 65 or above using Senior Octopus Cards or Personalised Octopus cards, Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 using JoyYou Card, and eligible persons with disabilities using Personalised Octopus cards with "Persons with Disabilities Status" can enjoy a flat fare of $2.0 per journey under the $2 Concessionary Fare. If the concessionary fare for eligible persons with disabilities aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above is less than $2.0 after a 50% discount from the regular fare, the beneficiary is only required to pay the original concessionary fare; if the original full fare for Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 or eligible persons with disabilities is already less than $2.0, the beneficiary is also only required to pay the original full fare.
  • Passengers are required to tender exact fare by cash or by Octopus card when boarding. No exact change will be given.
  • Passengers may also use AlipayHK "EasyGo", Alipay, QuickPass, BoC Pay "RideCode", WeChat Pay HK or WeChat "Ride Code", Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay cards with inductive payment capabilities, as well as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Huawei Pay mobile payment platforms for fare payment. Passengers using the above payment method can only enjoy the interchange concessions with other Citybus solely-operated routes or the Citybus departures of the jointly-operated routes, and cannot enjoy the "Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme" nor the "Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities".

This route is served by four double-decker buses; as the tender specifies that this route must be served by buses having emission standards of of Euro VI or above with dual wheelchair spaces, except in unforeseen circumstances or in the event of a bus shortage, it must be served by Enviro500 MMC 12m (8547-8567), its 12.8m version (6460-6499, 6700-6701) capable of carrying two wheelchair-bound passengers at the same time.
