The defunct Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 5 was operated by Citybus. It ran between Felix Villas and Causeway Bay (Whitfield Road), via Kennedy Town, Shek Tong Tsui, Sai Ying Pun (Des Voeux Road West →/Queen's Road West ←), Sheung Wan (Des Voeux Road Central →/Queen's Road Central ←), Central, Admiralty and Wan Chai (Hennessy Road).

It has been in service since 1928 and has been operated by three operators, namely the Hongkong Hotel, China Motor Bus (CMB) and Citybus, and was a long-established route serving the Western District for 87 years. The Transport Department (TD) ordered the termination of this route on 10 May 2015 by executive order on the grounds of the full opening of the MTR Island Line extension to Western District.

History[]

  • 1928: The Hongkong Hotel introduced a bus route between Causeway Bay and Shek Tong Tsui with no route number assigned.
  • 11 June 1933: The above unnumbered route was changed to operate between Tai Hang and Kennedy Town by China Motor Bus (CMB) and was assigned with the number 5.
  • December 1941: This route was suspended after the Japanese occupied Hong Kong and requisitioned all modes of transport for military purposes.
  • From 25 January 1942, services of the pre-war Route No. 1 was provided by the Japanese "Hong Kong Occupied Territory Government"; it was later discontinued by October 1942.
  • 9 April 1946: Route No. 5 resumed service after the British reoccupation of Hong Kong, but was shortened to run between Tai Hang and the Blake Pier.
  • 13 May 1946: Central terminus was moved from Blake Pier to Vehicular Ferry Pier.
  • 6 July 1946: Route was extended from Vehicular Ferry Pier to Possession Point.[1]
  • 1 November 1948: Route was re-extended to Kennedy Town due to the completion of Queen's Road West;[2] also, short trips between Tai Hang and Possession Point every morning and evening were introduced.
  • 5 February 1952: Route was diverted via Tung Lo Wan Road and no longer via Causeway Road when heading to Tai Hang by order of the Police; Eastbound stops at Cathay Hotel, Tai Hang Road Crossing, Chinese Recreation Club and Queen's College were cancelled and were replaced by stops at Causeway Road near Bay View Mansion and King Kee Shipyard instead.[3][4]
  • 16 April 1952: The short-haul service between Tai Hang and Possession Point was replaced by Route 5B.
  • 4 May 1953: Divert via Jubilee Street to Des Voeux Road Central for Tai Hang direction, omitting Pedder Street.
  • 4 April 1955: Tai Hang terminus was temporarily moved from Hing Fat Street near Electric Road junction to in front of 148 Tung Lo Wan Road (now known as Metropark Hotel, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong).[5]
    • This arrangement was a temporary measure to cope with the construction of the car park at the former site of King Kee Shipyard and the Royal Dockyard of the Marine Department; CMB was scheduled to extend this route to Gordon Road upon the completion of the road works in and around Victoria Park in late June of the same year, but this was not done and the stop was maintained at Tung Lo Wan Road.[6]
  • 1 March 1956: Diverted via Hill Road, Des Voeux Road West, Connaught Road West and Des Voeux Road Central, omitting Sai Ying Pun and a section of Queen's Road West in Sheung Wan when heading towards Tai Hang,[7] and the stop at No. 351 Des Voeux Road West near Whitty Street junction, No. 337 near Water Street junction, No. 251 near Western Street junction, No. 169 near Eastern Street junction, No. 83 near Sutherland Street junction, No. 9 near Wing Lok Street West junction, Connaught Road Central opposite Sheung Wan Old market, No. 269 Des Voeux Road Central near Cleverly Street, outside New World Theatre (now Infinitus Square) and No. 131 near Central Market.[8]
  • 17 May 1961: For Tai Hang direction, after arriving at Leighton Road, buses were diverted left turn to Irving Street, Pennington Street and Yee Wo Street, instead of going straight into Causeway Road via the Sharp Roundabout, in order to tie in with the "one-way roundabout system" implemented by the Police in that area.[9]
  • 16 April 1962: Last bus hours were postponed with these new departures:[10][11]
    • Departures at 00:15, 00:30, 00:45, 01:00 and 01:15 from Tai Hang; and
    • Departures at 00:50, 01:05, 01:20, 01:35 and 01:50 from Kennedy Town.
  • From 8:00 a.m. on 25 February 1963: After reaching Causeway Road in the direction of Tai Hang, buses were rerouted via Hing Fat Street, Lau Sin Street and King's Road, and no longer turn directly right onto Tung Lo Wan Road.[12]
  • From 2:00 pm on 26 May 1963: Buses were diverted to reach from Des Voeux Road Central directly to Chater Road when heading for Tai Hang, no longer observing Jackson Road; the original intermediate stop at Alexandra House and High Court was cancelled and replaced by a new station outside Union Building.[13]
  • 15 June 1964: Buses weer diverted via Tung Lo Wan Road outside the St. Paul's Hospital, with an additional intermediate in front of the Hospital in lieu of Moreton Terrace.[14]
  • 23 January 1967: Buses were diverted to turn left directly from Leighton Road to Pennington Street instead of via Irving Street when heading towards Tai Hang.
  • 16 April 1968: Kennedy Town terminus was moved to the newly completed bus terminus at Sai Ning Street.
  • 10 April 1973 at 10:00am: The terminus was temporarily relocated from Tai Hang to Tai Hang (Causeway Bay Magistracy) to cope with the drainage works on Tung Lo Wan Road.
    • This arrangement was also originally a temporary measure for a period of six months, but was later made permanent.[15]
  • 30 December 1973 8:00 am onwards: Buses towards Causeway Bay were diverted via Queen Victoria Street instead of Jubilee Street to accommodate the change of direction of traffic between the two streets.[16]
  • 1 May 1980: Western District terminus was relocated to Sai Ying Pun and changed to provide service only from early morning to late evening on weekdays to supplement the service of Route 10.[17][18][19]
  • 8 January 1982: Terminus was moved from Tai Hang (Causeway Bay Magistracy) to Causeway Bay (Whitfield Road) to tie in with the permanent closure of the former due to the construction of the Tin Hau Station of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR).[20]
  • From 10:00 am on 9 August 1982: The bus stops at the section of Des Voeux Road Central between Wing Wo Street and Gilman Street for Causeway Bay was cancelled.[21]
  • 8 October 1982: To tie in with the implementation of the Public Transport Priority Scheme in Central, the direction of traffic between Jubilee Street and Queen Victoria Street was switched to via Queen Victoria Street towards Queen's Road Central when heading towards Sai Ying Pun.[22]
  • 11 July 1983 from 10:00 am onwards: To cope with the traffic diversion arrangement for the opening of Tai Hang Road Flyover, the direction of traffic towards Sai Ying Pun was diverted to Causeway Road via Moreton Terrace instead of Tung Lo Wan Road west of Moreton Terrace.

Network 26[]

  • 1 September 1993: Citybus took over the operations of this route as one of the first batch of 28 routes (Network 26) to be taken over from CMB; Citybus operated a mix of air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses at the same time.
  • 9 December 1996: All morning departures after peak hours were extended to Kennedy Town; however, due to insufficient bus bay spaces at Kennedy Town Bus Terminus in the morning, morning departures were maintained to Sai Ying Pun only.
  • 27 December 1996: Buses were rerouted to Belcher's Street via North Street, New Praya, Kennedy Town and Sands Street towards Causeway Bay and no longer observing the whole of Belcher's Street eastbound to tie in with the implementation of the one-way roundabout system at Kennedy Town, with the section of Belcher's Street between North Street and Sands Street converted to one-way westbound traffic.[23]
  • 20 January 1997: Service was resumed on holidays and daily service hours was extended to midnight.
  • 1 December 1997: Joint headways with Routes 5A, 5B and 10X were introduced with a combined frequency of every 2 to 3 minutes throughout the day.[24]
  • 18 January 1998: Diverted via Cadogan Street, Catchick Street and Praya, Kennedy Town to Des Voeux Road West for Causeway Bay direction, no longer observing Belcher's Street, North Street, New Praya, Kennedy Town, Sands Street, Belcher's Street, Queen's Road West and Hill Road to tie in with the implementation of "Kennedy Town Phase III Traffic Management Measures" by Transport Department to change the whole section of Queen's Road West and Belcher's Street to one-way westbound.[25][26]
  • 22 August 1999: All trips were unified to terminate at Kennedy Town; on the same day, all return trips were diverted via Hennessy Road instead of Queen's Road East, Happy Valley and Leighton Road.

Bus Deployments[]

This route was mainly served by Volvo Olympian 12m (324-329, 5XX-6XX) and Enviro500/MMC 12m (81XX-84XX) with 8 vehicles in total.

Bus Deployment History[]

The route ran, from the time of the Hongkong Hotel to the early days of the CMB franchise on Hong Kong Island, with Vulcan Prince buses.

In the early post-war years, it was served by a variety of restored vehicles; in 1948, it was replaced by the Tilling-Stevens "Express" K5LA7 ("white tank"), and in the mid-1950s by the Guy Arab UFs.

The first Daimler Fleetline (LF1-30) was introduced in 1980, and in the following year it was replaced by a second-hand Daimler Fleetline (XF) from London, until Citybus took over the route in September 1993.

After Citybus took over the service, it immediately introduced an air-conditioned bus service, with a second-hand Leyland Olympian 10.4m air-conditioned bus (2XX) and a second-hand Leyland Atlantean (6XX, commonly known as "Po Chai") non-air-conditioned bus from Singapore running on the route. However, between 1994 and 1996, when Citybus invested heavily in the Southern District, the number of air-conditioned buses on this route was reduced and reverted to a full non-air-conditioned route, with the Leyland Victory II from New Lantao Bus (NLB) also appearing on this route.

In the late 1990s, Citybus significantly enhanced its bus services around Kennedy Town. In 1996, the route was gradually re-extended back to Kennedy Town with a large number of double-decker air-conditioned buses (including the then newly licensed Volvo Olympian 11m 9XX-10XX) running alongside non-air-conditioned buses; in 1998, the route was finally converted to a full air-confitioned service and has since been served by the Leyland Olympian 12m (3XX, which left the franchise in 2011) and Volvo Olympian 12m (4XX-6XX). (4XX-6XX) as the mainstay for 11 years.

Citybus introduced the Enviro500 12m (81XX-83XX) in large numbers between 2009 and 2012, and it has also been seen on this route from time to time since the end of 2010. In late 2013, the high-capacity Enviro500 MMC 12-metre (83XX-84XX) was introduced, supplemented by the Dennis Trident 12m (2288-2301) as one of the main vehicles.

On the final service day of the route, Citybus dispatched a Volvo B9TL 10.6m (7500, demonstrator bus) to run the final service from Causeway Bay (Whitfield Road), ending the 87-year history of the route.

Ridership[]

This route was used to be the main trunk service in the Queen's Road West and Tai Hang area, and after its cancellation, only Route 10 remains to serve Queen's Road West and no alternative route or service has been provided to the Tai Hang area. Therefore Clarisse Yeung (楊雪盈), the District Councillor for Tai Hang, stated that she hoped for the resumption of this route's service in a bus history guided tour in Tai Hang, at least during the AM peak hours, to relieve the burden of other routes and to avoid passengers using the more expensive Cross-Harbour Bus Route 914 as an alternative to travelling on foot.[38] After 5 years of the cancellation of this route, a replacement route was granted to Tai Hang in which Citybus commenced an AM special departure of Route 5B, running one-way from Causeway Bay (Tung Lo Wan Road) to Kennedy Town, on a 3-month trial basis.

According to the information in the relevant documents, the ridership figures of this route are as follows

  • 20 September 1974: According to a survey conducted by the Traffic and Transport Investigation Department of the Works Bureau, the adherence to the official schedule for the whole day was very poor, with only 55% of the scheduled trips running. The average occupancy rate during the busiest hour was as high as 130% and the service standard needs to be improved. The imbalance of 3,618 passenger trips occurred almost entirely in the section between Causeway Bay and Central. The imbalance of 3,618 passenger trips occurred almost entirely in the section between Causeway Bay and Central (6,130 westbound trips but only 2,975 eastbound trips), which is believed to be due to the fact that passengers tend to take the routes that start closer to the boarding stop (i.e. the Causeway Bay-bound Route 5 when heading to Central) when they overlap with other routes (e.g. Route Nos. 2, 10, 10A, 20) (i.e. passengers would choose Route No. 5 from Causeway Bay to Central instead of routes from Eastern District, and routes to Eastern District instead of Route No. 5 from Central to Causeway Bay) in order to have a seat.[37]
  • 1993: According to the data by CMB in February 1993, the monthly patronage for this route was 209,547.[39]
  • 2014: The average occupancy rate of about 70% during peak hours; average occupancy rate of about 40% during off-peak hours.[40]
  • 2015: Before the opening of the MTR West Island Line, the average occupancy rate during the busiest half hour was 66%; after the opening, it was 51%, recording a 35.9% drop in patronage.[41]
