The Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 42 is operated by Citybus. It runs between North Point Ferry Pier and Wah Fu (South), via Fortress Hill, Causeway Bay, Aberdeen Tunnel, Wong Chuk Hang Business Area, Aberdeen and Tin Wan.

Route 42 operates only during Monday to Saturday morning peak hours, while services during other time periods are replaced by Route 38 via Wah Fu Road.

History[]

  • 18 November 1985: CMB launched Route 42 between Wah Fu (South) and North Point Ferry Pier, which only provided services during morning and evening peak hours on weekdays.[1]
  • 16 December 1986: Extended to provide service during weekday mornings to evenings.[2]
  • 16 August 1987: Holiday service was introduced.
  • 29 October 1995: Air-conditioned bus service was introduced.
  • 1 September 1998: Changed to be operated by New World First Bus (NWFB) following the end of CMB Franchised Bus Service.
  • 26 July 1999: The first departure time was advanced with service hour extension to midnight.[3]
  • 2000: Enhanced to a full air-conditioned service.
  • 26 August 2000: Interchange concessions with Routes 2A, 2X, 8 and 8P were introduced, which was the first set of Octopus Interchange concessions by NWFB. [4]
  • TBC: A new stop was added off Wah Sang House Wah Fu Estate for the convenience of residents of Wah Fu (ii) Estate which no longer required them to cross the road from Pui Ying Secondary School to Wah Fu (ii) Estate Commercial Complex.
  • 1 July 2013: A new section fare from Ngan Mok Street towards North Point Ferry Pier was introduced as a condition of renewal of NWFB franchise.[5]
  • 14 May 2016: North Point terminus was relocated to the newly built North Point Ferry Pier Public Transport Interchange, and North Point-bound buses were diverted to the new terminus via Java Road and Tin Chiu Street after Shu Kuk Street.[6]
  • 15 December 2017: "Next Bus" Arrival Time Inquiry Service was introduced on this route.[7]
  • 28 May 2018: Trips from Wah Fu before 10pm were rerouted via Wong Chuk Hang Road Flyover with the stops at "Aberdeen Sports Ground" and "Nam Long Shan Road" on Wong Chuk Hang Road being cancelled.[8][9]
  • 4 November 2019: Trips from Wah Fu between 07:30 and 08:30 on Mondays to Fridays were rerouted via Wah Fu Road Flyover on a trial basis, originally a trial scheduled for 3 months[10][11] and was later became permanent thereafter:[12]
    • The stops at "Yan's Tower", "Yip Hing Street" and "Wong Chuk Hang Recreation Ground" on Wong Chuk Hang Road were cancelled and replaced by the stop at "Aberdeen Technical School".
  • 27 November 2022: Changed to provide service on Mondays to Saturdays, with other service periods replaced by Route 38 detouring via Wah Fu Estate. The last bus times from North Point on Mondays to Fridays and Saturdays were adjusted to 09:49 and 09:50 respectively, while the last bus time from Wah Fu was advanced to 09:52.[13][14]
  • 1 July 2023: Changed to be operated by Citybus following the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger.

Fare Remarks
  • Half-fare for children aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above; the remainder of the fare after half-fare will be counted as 10 cents.
  • Elderly persons aged 65 or above using Senior Octopus Cards or Personalised Octopus cards, Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 using JoyYou Card, and eligible persons with disabilities using Personalised Octopus cards with "Persons with Disabilities Status" can enjoy a flat fare of $2.0 per journey under the $2 Concessionary Fare. If the concessionary fare for eligible persons with disabilities aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above is less than $2.0 after a 50% discount from the regular fare, the beneficiary is only required to pay the original concessionary fare; if the original full fare for Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 or eligible persons with disabilities is already less than $2.0, the beneficiary is also only required to pay the original full fare.
  • Passengers are required to tender exact fare by cash or by Octopus card when boarding. No exact change will be given.
  • Passengers may also use AlipayHK "EasyGo", Alipay, QuickPass, BoC Pay "RideCode", WeChat Pay HK or WeChat "Ride Code", Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay cards with inductive payment capabilities, as well as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Huawei Pay mobile payment platforms for fare payment. Passengers using the above payment method can only enjoy the interchange concessions with other Citybus solely-operated routes or the Citybus departures of the jointly-operated routes, and cannot enjoy the "Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme" nor the "Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities".

Remarks:

  • Passengers must use the same Octopus card or the same electronic payment account to take the above routes consecutively within 90 minutes before they can enjoy the interchange concession.
  • Children under 12 years old will receive a 50% concession; passengers benefiting from the Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Disabled Persons will receive a 50% concession on the second journey fare The concessioned fare for the second journey is the lower of the above second-trip fare (half concession for seniors or qualified persons with disabilities under 12 years old) or $2.0, so some interchange combinations may not have interchange concessions in disguise.
  • This interchange concession is only valid for boarding before Aberdeen Tunnel on the first journey and interchangering to a bus route in the same direction, and is not applicable to the same route.
  • Some routes are only operated during peak hours, so some route combinations may not be able to complete interchanges within the designated time.
