Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 33X is operated by Citybus. It runs between Shau Kei Wan and Cyberport, which serves Sai Wan Ho, Quarry Bay, North Point before going onto Central - Wan Chai Bypass and Rumsey Street Flyover towards Sai Ying Pun (→), HKU, Queen Mary Hospital, Chi Fu Fa Yuen and Wah Fu Estate.

Following the cessation of Route 309 in 2008, Route 33X is again a franchised bus route that crosses all four administrative districts on Hong Kong Island (Eastern, Wan Chai, Central and Western and Southern); unlike Route 309, Route 33X skirts the Wan Chai District without stopping.

History[]

New route launch with the opening of Bypass[]

The western part of Pok Fu Lam in the Southern District has historically lacked direct bus services to areas east of North Point. Following the opening of the Central-Wan Chai Bypass, journey times from the Southern District to Hong Kong Island East via Pok Fu Lam Road are expected to be significantly reduced, offering a more reliable alternative to the Aberdeen Tunnel. To meet this anticipated demand, and with the new road nearing completion, the Transport Department and New World First Bus (NWFB) proposed in the 2018-2019 Bus Route Planning Programme to adjust the frequency of Route 42 to introduce the new Route 33X. operating one service daily from Cyberport on weekday mornings. The route will loop via Wah Fu Estate and Chi Fu Garden before proceeding via the Hill Road Flyover, Rumsey Street Flyover and the Central - Wan Chai Bypass directly to Hong Kong Island East with the journey from Chi Fu to North Point projected to take approximately 28 minutes. District councillors from Eastern and Southern Districts welcomed the new route, with local organisations further noting it would facilitate direct MTR interchanges to Kowloon East for residents along the route. However, Southern District representatives expressed dissatisfaction that NWFB chose to divert resources from Route 42, which residents frequently complain about for service irregularities, while NWFB stated Route 42 had capacity for minor adjustments.[1][2]

The new route was originally scheduled to commence service in the fourth quarter of 2018. However, the Central - Wan Chai Bypass did not open until 20 January 2019. The Transport Department and NWFB subsequently arranged trial runs, with the route finally launching in April, but Route 42 did not reduce its frequency at the same time.[3]

  • 15 April 2019: Route 33X entered service, initially operating one departure from Cyberport at 07:45 on Mondays to Fridays.[4][5]

The Transport Department and New World First Bus proposed in the 2020-2021 Bus Route Planning Programme to add one additional service each for Route 33X during the morning and afternoon peak periods. Then-South District Councillor Lam Andrew Tak-wo noted buses frequently arrived at Chi Fu Estate fully occupied and supported the additional service while Councillor Paul Zimmerman proposed delaying the afternoon departure by 10 minutes, from 18:05 to 18:15.[6] The plan was originally scheduled for implementation in the third quarter of 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic and other factors. Towards year-end, AMS Public Transport, operator of GMB route 69 connecting Hong Kong Island East with Cyberport, proposed service adjustments. These included introducing a Monday-Friday express service departing from Cyberport at 18:10, omitting Wah Fu Estate and Chi Fu Fa Yuen to travel directly via Pok Fu Lam Road into Central - Wan Chai Bypass. Local organisations criticised AMS Public Transport's actions as "leaving fertile ground uncultivated while cultivating barren land" (瘦田無人耕,耕開有人爭), arguing that long-distance cross-district demand should be met by franchised buses rather than 19-seater minibuses. They expressed concern that the minibus proposal would hinder NWFB's efforts to increase services and demanded the Transport Department withdraw the minibus restructuring plan. Simultaneously, they urged New World First Bus to expedite service enhancements. The minibus reorganisation ultimately came to nothing, while additional services on Route 33X commenced in mid-2021.[7][8][9]

  • 24 May 2021: A new departure at 08:00 was added with an additional evening service departing from Cyberport at 18:15.[10][11]

Introduction of return services, further connecting Eastern and Southern Districts[]

For the first four years of operation, Route 33X provided only one-way service to the Eastern District. Local organisations petitioned for return services and proposed routes via Smithfield or Western Street for public consultation; the Smithfield option proved more popular in related discussions.[12]

The Transport Department and Citybus/NWFB finally proposed adding evening return services in the 2023-2024 Bus Route Planning Programme, with buses departing from Rumsey Street Flyover and ascending Pok Fu Lam Road via Western Street. Paul Zimmerman argued the plan would reduce ridership on GMB route 69, creating vicious competition between the two services, and urged the department to consider replacing the minibus with Route 33X. The Transport Department responded at the time that the minibus service utilised the Aberdeen Tunnel, meaning the routes were distinct. The bus companies indicated they would study the matter at an appropriate time and it was to be implemented following the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger.[13]

By late 2024, GMB route 69 had been reduced to operating only during peak hours on Mondays to Fridays. In 2025, Citybus planned to allocate more resources to the Southern District to address local demands and thus proposed in the 2025-2026 Bus Route Planning Programme to upgrade Route 33X to whole-day bidirectional service, which was welcomed by District Council members. This coincided with the government's study on merging the East and West Hospital Clusters on Hong Kong Island, potentially relocating some specialist or medical services to Queen Mary Hospital. Local organisations view this as aligning with the network concept, facilitating Eastern District residents' follow-up appointments at Queen Mary Hospital. They also revisited NWFB's restructuring of routes 38 and 42 in 2022, suggesting that Route 33X's whole-day operation could be seen as compensation for the residents of Chi Fu Fa Yuen over the withdrawal of daytime services to and from North Point omitting Wah Fu Estate after the morning peak period.[14][15][16]

  • 1 July 2023: Changed to be operated by Citybus following the Citybus and NWFB Franchised Bus Network Merger.
  • 25 September 2023: New return service was introduced, departing at 17:55 and 18:15 from Grand Promenade to Cyberport on Mondays to Fridays.[17][18]
  • 24 August 2025: Enhanced to whole-day service with Eastern District end extended to Shau Kei Wan:[19][20]
    • The service hour from Cyberport on Mondays to Saturdays was 07:45-19:40 and that from Shau Kei Wan on Mondays to Saturdays was 07:40-19:40;
    • The service hour from Cyberport on Sundays and Public Holidays was 09:15-19:15 and that from Shau Kei Wan on Sundays and Public Holidays was 09:00-19:30;
    • Interchange concession with Route A10 was introduced.
  • 17 November 2025: Service was enhanced:[21][22]
    • The daily service hours from Shau Kei Wan were extended to 07:30-21:00, while that from Cyberport to 07:45-21:00;
    • Interchange concessions with routes 8X, 382, 608, 682, 682A, 682B and 682P were introduced.
