Controversies[]

In 2017, NWFB redeployed vehicles from this route and Route 82 to operate Route 8H. The frequency of this route has been reduced and the lost trips appeared from time to time. The Eastern District pan-democratic councillors, together with the Public Transport Research Group, conducted a survey on the operation of the above two routes before and after the opening of Route 8H. The survey found that after the commencement of Route 8H, the highest lost trip rate of this route in the Wan Chai direction increased sharply from 5% to 61.5%, and the longest waiting time increased significantly from 15 minutes to 36 minutes. The lost trip problem was considered to be caused by the fact that the number of buses of the two existing routes was insufficient to cope with the scheduled trips after the introduction of the new route. The two organisations therefore requested NWFB to replace the redeployed buses of the two existing routes so that additional resources could be used to serve the new routes.[23]

Related incidents[]

  • 28 February 1998: At about 2:00 p.m., a Yiu Tung Estate-bound CMB Dennis Condor (DL38/EH7098) crashed into a van on Hennessy Road; no one was injured in the incident.[24]
  • 12 September 2010: At around 4:00pm, a Dennis Trident (1075/HY1740) heading towards Yiu Tung Estate hit a 70-year-old man at the junction of King's Road near Man Hong Street and rolled him underneath the vehicle, and he succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to hospital.[25][26]
  • 12 April 2014: At nearly 5:00 pm, a Dennis Trident (3305/JJ3576) heading towards Yiu Tung Estate crashed into a stone pillar of a building at the junction of Hennessy Road near Marsh Road, with no injuries in the incident.[27]
  • 29 January 2017: At around 11:00pm, an Enviro500 MMC (8472/TD5052) travelling on Route 8X towards Siu Sai Wan was waiting for the traffic light at the junction of King's Road eastbound near Jupiter Street when it was hit by a Yiu Tung-bound Enviro500 (5519/PS2561) which was following it and failed to catch up with the traffic light.[28]
