The Hong Kong Island Urban Bus Route 2 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Grand Promenade[Remark 1] and Central (Macau Ferry), via Aldrich Bay, Shau Kei Wan, Quarry Bay, North Point, Tai Hang (→), Causeway Bay, Wan Chai (Gloucester Road) and Admiralty.
Route 2 started serving Hong Kong Island residents since the 1920s and was the first bus route to serve North Point and Shau Kei Wan in history and it is positioned as a trunk route nowadays, mainly serving passengers travelling to and from various districts along the route; the termini of this route and the Island Eastern Corridor Express Route 720 are the same, but differed largely on service scopes and targets.
History[]
Pre-war era[]
In the 1920s, the tram was the main means of transport for people travelling between different parts of the north shore of Hong Kong Island, running across the north shore of the Island from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan. However, due to road conditions, the section between Causeway Bay and Shau Kei Wan was operated with single track services and therefore ran very sparsely, although passenger demand on this section of the route was high.[1]
In view of this, the Hong Kong Tramways applied for a bus route between the Blake Pier and Taikoo Dockyard (West Gate) to supplement the tram service and solve the problem of tram congestion. The route was introduced on 1 October 1929 and was not numbered at the time. It ran between Queen's Road East (including the present Queensway), Wan Chai Gap Road (later subsumed under Queen's Road East), Morrison Hill Road, Leighton Hill Road and Caroline Road (which was later subsumed under Leighton Road).[2][3] The route was later extended to Taikoo Dockyard (East Gate) and then diverted via Lockhart Road.
On 11 June 1933, the unnumbered route was taken over by China Motor Bus (CMB) following the effect of regional bus franchise. On 1 April 1935, CMB reorganised its bus services and moved the terminus of this route from the Blake Pier to Yaumati Ferry.[4] In the same year, a special service between Yaumati Ferry and North Point Swimming Area was introduced, running daily during the swimming season.
This route was diverted from Lockhart Road to Hennessy Road on 1 July 1939.[5] The change was originally scheduled to take effect on 1 January of the same year,[6] but due to opposition from the tram company, CMB withdrew the plan two days before the original effective date,[7] and it was eventually delayed until July. In 1939, the route ran every ten minutes throughout the day, with the frequency doubled between noon and 8 o'clock daily during the swimming season.[5]
In December 1941, during World War II, the service was suspended due to the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. The route was not resumed immediately after the British reoccupation of Hong Kong, but was temporarily out of service after the war due to damage to the track between Taikoo Dock (West Gate) and Shau Kei Wan. The tram service was cancelled on 5 July 1946 to coincide with the resumption of tram service.
Post-war development[]
In March 1947, CMB applied to the authorities for the resumption of Route No. 2, but the application was not approved. The route was finally reopened in November 1947 and the pre-war terminus, known as "Yaumati Ferry Pier", was renamed as Vehicular Ferry Pier.[8] On 12 November 1949, the eastern terminus of this route was moved from Tai Koo Dockyard (East Gate) to Shau Kei Wan (Aldrich Street near Shau Kei Wan Road) and became one of the first bus routes to serve Shau Kei Wan, along with Route No. 8, which was introduced on the same day.
With the development of the eastern part of Hong Kong Island, special short trips were introduced in mid-1951 between Vehicular Ferry Pier and North Point, which were replaced by Route 10 on 1 August of the same year. 16 June 1962, the terminus was relocated from Vehicular Ferry Pier to Cleverly Street.[9]
The first CMB double-decker bus was deployed on this route in the morning of 22 January 1963, and a "Special Express" service between Central Market and Shau Kei Wan was introduced on 21 October 1968, serving only Monday to Friday morning, noon and evening, and Saturday morning and noon, with only a few en-route stops along the way. It was renamed "Route No. 2 Special Express" in early 1970 and was replaced by Route 20 on 1 November 1973.
On 24 August 1982, the Shau Kei Wan terminus was relocated from the Aldrich Street roadside to a large pitched bus terminus next to Nam On Lane. A week later (1 September), the Central terminus was moved from Cleverly Street to Macau Ferry.
The Eastern District was growing by leaps and bounds and the road network is getting better and better. The routing of this route via the whole of King's Road had become time-consuming for passengers between Central and Western District and Causeway Bay/Eastern District interior. On 1 September 1998, CMB's franchise ended and the route's operations was replaced by New World First Bus (NWFB).
On 23 August 1996, an air-conditioned service was added to this route, which was later upgraded to full air-conditioned service in 2000.
Into the new century[]
In addition to the competition from the Express routes, the long journey time of this route via many busy roads on the north shore of Hong Kong Island and its overlap with many other routes in different districts have led NWFB to adjust the route from Central to Causeway Bay several times in the new century to provide more direct services to passengers along the route. On 3 June 2001, the terminus was changed from Shau Kei Wan to Aldrich Bay Aldrich Garden, and Central-bound buses were diverted via Gloucester Road and no longer via Yee Wo Street and Hennessy Road.[10][11] On 24 June 2001, Central-bound buses were diverted again via Inner Gloucester Road, and the original en-route stop outside Wan Chai Police Station on Gloucester Road and before the junction of Fenwick Street on Gloucester Road was cancelled and was replaced by the bus stop before the junction of Gloucester Road and O'Brien Road, as well as outside Malaysia House on Gloucester Road.[12] On 13 July 2003, the route was also diverted via Lockhart Road and Gloucester Road for Aldrich Bay direction, no longer observing Yee Wo Street.[13]
In line with the development of Aldrich Bay, this route was extended to Oi Yin Street on 3 June 2001 and the terminus was subsequently relocated from Aldrich Street to a temporary bus terminus opposite Tung Tao Court at Aldrich Street on 9 June 2002.[14][15] On 24 June 2006, the terminus was further relocated from Aldrich Bay to Sai Wan Ho (Grand Promenade) Public Transport Interchange to tie in with the opening of the terminus.[16][17]

Bus deployment evolution history[]

|
Route 2 was operated by the Hong Kong Tramways until the early days of the CMB, when the Thornycroft Cygnet buses were added to the route in 1936. During the early days of service resumption after the war, some surviving Cygnets became the main vehicles on this route after repairs. In 1949, Tilling Stevens K5LA7 (known as "white tank") became the main vehicle when this route was extended to Shau Kei Wan, and some of the repaired Daimler COG5DD buses also served this route. From the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, the Guy Arab UF (known as "Big Chicken") became the main type of bus used on this route. The first Daimler Fleetline (LF1-30 and prototype SF1) were introduced to the route in 1980 and were replaced by second-hand Daimler Fleetline from London in the mid-1980s. The first Daimler Fleetline (LF1-30 and prototype SF1) were transferred to this route in 1980 and then replaced by second-hand Daimler Fleetline (XF) from London in the mid-1980s. Before the end of the CMB franchise in 1998, 11 vehicles were deployed on this route, including six Daimler Fleetline (LF) and five Dennis Jubilant (DS) buses. In the early years of New World First Bus (NWFB)'s operations, the non-A/C fleet remained the same, with the Dennis Condor (DA) and the Dennis Trident being the main A/C buses, and the Dennis Dart (20XX) low-floor buses were used to run on this route around 2000. In July 2001, a Volvo Super Olympian 12m (5068-5089) meeting Euro III emission standards was introduced on this route for publicity purposes, and since August 2009, all Enviro500 and Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (40XX) have been running on this route for "warm-up" during their early service days. From November 2016, NWFB arranged Volvo B9TL 12m (5200-5224) buses to run this route. In December of the same year, the recently-launched Enviro400 Euro V 10.4m (3800-3859) also joined the route. From April 2018, 12.8m buses were officially assigned to this route. |

Ridership[]
There are already a number of Eastern Corridor Express routes to Wan Chai and Central-Sheung Wan, while Route 2 provides service along the north shore of Hong Kong Island from Central-Sheung Wan to Shau Kei Wan. However, it overlaps with other more frequent routes along the route, resulting in low patronage.
According to the Bus Route Planning Programme (BRPP) and other information, the ridership of this route are as follows:
- 1993 (CMB): A number of 565,119 passengers were recorded.[36]
- 2005: The daily patronage was about 15,500 with an average occupancy rate of 67% during peak hours; about 775 passengers picked up and dropped off at Gloucester Road, Wan Chai and 1,960 passengers picked up and dropped off at Causeway Road and Gloucester Road.
- 2012: The occupancy rates were 30-49% (from Grand Promenade) and 17-45% (from Central) in the morning peak period and 29-32% (from Grand Promenade) and 30-48% (from Central) in the afternoon peak period.
- 2014: Average occupancy rate of about 56% during peak hours and 34% during off-peak hours.
- 2023: The average occupancy rates for the morning and afternoon peak hours are about 25% and 40% for the Sai Wan Ho bound at the Immigration Tower and about 40% and 20% for the Central bound at Kornhill Plaza respectively; the average occupancy rates for the off-peak hours are about 20% for the Sai Wan Ho bound at the Immigration Tower and about 30% for the Central bound at Kornhill Plaza.[37]

- 28 January 2014: At dusk, an Enviro500 MMC (4042/SK7383) left the Grand Promenade and stopped in front of a traffic light post. A man blocked the bus with his body and instructed a child, believed to be his son, to approach. When the bus captain did not allow them to board the bus, the man pressed the door button to open the door and forced his way onto the bus, accusing the bus captain. The incident was filmed by a netizen and uploaded to the internet.[67]
