The Hong Kong Island Mid-Levels Bus Route 1 is operated by Citybus. It runs between Happy Valley (Upper) and Central (Macau Ferry), via Wan Chai (Wan Chai Road, Hennessy Road), Admiralty and Central.

Although this route is classified as a "Hong Kong Island Mid-Levels Bus Route" in the Schedule of Routes Order, its fares are on a par with members of the Western Trunk Routes such as routes 5B and 10, and no higher fares are charged according to the Scale of Fares.

History[]

  • 5 November 1928: The unnumbered route between West Point and Happy Valley came into service, operated by the Hong Kong Tramways, to supplement the high-capacity trams. It was then shortened to Sheung Wan Wing Lok Street Pier a few days after commencement.
  • 11 June 1933: China Motor Bus (CMB) took over as Route 1 and the terminus was moved from Wing Lok Street Pier to Blake Pier.
  • 1934: Terminus moved from Blake Pier to Yaumati Ferry Pier.
  • 1 April 1935: extended from Yaumati Ferry Pier to Sai Ying Pun (Eastern Street junction), passing through Connaught Road Central and Connaught Road West, and via Yaumati Ferry Pier terminus.[1][2]
  • 1 January 1939: The terminus was again moved from Eastern Street back to Yaumati Ferry Pier.[3]
  • 1 July 1939: The return journey was diverted via Hennessy Road and Huntington Road (i.e. Fleming Road) instead of Johnston Road.
  • December 1941: Service suspended due to the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.
  • 22 September 1945: Service resumed.[4]
  • By late 1940s: Diverted via Jackson Road, Chater Road and Club Street instead of Murray Road when heading towards Vehicular Ferry Pier.
  • 10 February 1953: Terminus relocated to the newly-built bus terminus at Vehicular Ferry Pier.[5]
  • 17 August 1953: Additionally observeng Shing Wo Road, King Kwong Street and Shan Kwong Road to Wong Nai Chung Road after leaving Happy Valley Terminus towards Vehicular Ferry Pier.[6]
  • 16 September 1954: Additionally observing Blue Pool Road, Green Lane, Broom Road, Blue Pool Road and Sing Woo Road in the direction of Vehicular Ferry Pier before returning to the original route at King Kwong Street and adding six new stops along the way.[7]
  • 1 April 1959: Last bus time from Happy Valley and Vehicular Ferry Pier was delayed to 23:38 and 00:08 respectively.[8]
    • 1 January 1960: Terminus relocated to Cleverly Street to relieve congestion at Vehicular Ferry Pier Bus Terminus.[9]
  • 1 April 1961: Divert both bounds via the new road passing through the former Royal Navy Shipyard (officially named Harcourt Road after six days) and Gloucester Road to and from Fleming Road, instead of via Murray Road, Queen's Road East (now part of Queensway) and Hennessy Road.[10][11]
    • New stops were set up at the new road near the Admiralty Barracks, at the junction of the new road and Arsenal Street (section fare starting point), in front of the Luk Kwok Hotel on Gloucester Road and on Fleming Road near Jaffe Road.
    • From the same day, two additional buses were deployed, bringing the total number of vehicles in use to 16.[12][13]
  • Early 1962: Happy Valley Terminus moved from Blue Pool Road Junction to Broom Road and renamed "Happy Valley (Broom Road)" (renamed Happy Valley (Upper) after Citybus took over operations of this route).
  • Circa early 1970s (no later than 1 July 1972): Divert for Happy Valley bound via Cotton Tree Drive, Queensway and Hennessy Road, no longer observing Harcourt Road and Gloucester Road; as for Cleverly Street direction, buses will no longer go straight out of Gloucester Road after Fleming Road, but via Hennessy Road and Fenwick Street.
  • 23 March 1981: Central Terminus moved to Macau Ferry.[14]
  • 18 August 1986: Central Terminus moved to Rumsey Street, and divert via Queensway and Des Voeux Road Central, no longer via Harcourt Road for Central bound.[15]
  • 1 September 1993: Citybus takes over the operations of this route, being one of the first 28 routes (Network 26) to be taken over from CMB; service was also upgraded to fully air-conditioned service from the same date.
  • 15 January 1995: Divert via the re-aligned Sports Road into Wong Nai Chung Road for Happy Valley bound buses, and no longer turning right into the latter from Leighton Road. [17]
  • Early 1999: Diverted via Yuk Sau Street instead of King Kwong Street for Central-bound buses due to road works.
  • 31 May 2004: Merged with Route 5A and extended from Central to Kennedy Town (Belcher Bay), with the section between Happy Valley and Central remaining more or less the same as the original route, then to and from Belcher Bay via Des Voeux Road West, with full fare reduced and all sectional fares removed.[16]
    • The route was retained on a separate basis from the 5A route. At that time, Routes 1 and 5A were separately numbered, but the routes and stops were identical, and an integrated timetable was adopted, with buses running on both routes.
  • 28 June 2004: The terminus was relocated to Kennedy Town to reduce the impact of congestion at Belcher's Street.[17][18]
  • 28 November 2004: Following the results of the passenger survey (see "Citybus Route 5A §5A merged with Route 1"), route numbers on all trips on "1" and "5A" were unified as Route 1.
  • 15 August 2005: Octopus interchange concession with Route R11 was introduced.[19]
  • 12 May 2013: Additional intermediate stop at Happy Valley (Lower) Terminus for Happy Valley (Upper) bound was added starting from 10:00am.
  • 10 May 2015: Extended from Kennedy Town to Felix Villas with an interchange discount with Route 10 to replace Route 5 which ceased operation on that date. This is one of the changes in the Public Transport Re-organisation Plans to tie in with the Commissioning of the West Island Line.[20][21]
  • 12 February 2018: "Next Bus" Arrival Time Inquiry Service was introduced on this route.
  • 6 October 2024: Truncated from Felix Villas to Macau Ferry, with interchange concessions with Route 5B introduced at the same time. [22][23]

Bus deployments[]

As the route passes through the Low Emission Zone for Franchised Buses, the vehicles deployed must meet Euro V emission standards or above.

9 double-decker buses are used on this route, with the MMC 12m (8128-8490, also including the hybrid versions - 8400 and 8401) and the Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (6300-6490) being the usual bus models deployed. These buses are often interchangably deployed with other Western District Trunk Routes (5B, 5X, 10).

Bus Deployment evolution history[]

Bus Deployment evolution history of Citybus Route 1

In the late 1980s, as the role of this route in connecting with ferries had diminished, and its overlapping with a number of other routes along the way, in addition to higher fares, its ridership was not as high as before. At that time, CMB mainly deployed double-decker Guy Arab V (LX) buses on this route.

In order to build up its image, Citybus immediately deployed Leyland Olympian 12m double-decker air-conditioned bus (3XX) and seconded the same type of 11m bus (1XX-2XX) from the non-franchised section from the day it took over this route, in order to improve its service quality and to recover the lost ridership from the CMB era. However, as many residents of Happy Valley had already been accustomed to driving their cars as means of transportation, the ridership did not improve much even after the improvisation of bus service. Citybus then switched to deploy the shorter Leyland Olympian (2XX), which was the mainstay of this route until 31 May 2004.

To coincide with the opening of the new airport in 1998, Citybus ordered a number of Dennis Trident luxury coaches for use on the Cityflyer routes. Prior to the opening of the new airport, Citybus deployed the Dennis Trident buses for several times on this route to test the performance of the new buses and for promotional purposes.

This line was merged with Route 5A on 31 May 2004 and extended to Kennedy Town (Belcher Bay), where it was converted into one of the trunk routes and subsequently replaced the latter. As the ridership of Route 5A was as high as that of the other routes to and from the Western District, the 12m double-decker Leyland Olympian buses (3XX), Dennis Dragon (8XX) and Volvo Olympian (3XX-6XX) were deployed instead.

The Enviro500 and its successor, the Enviro500 MMC (81XX-84XX), have been introduced in large numbers on Citybus routes since 2009 and have appeared on this route from time to time since 2010; at the same time, the Dennis Trident (22XX) buses also occasionally run on this route, and in November 2015, in conjunction with the implementation of the Low Emission Zone for Franchised Buses, these two models were introduced on a regular basis.

In May 2017, two Enviro500 MMC Hybrid buses (8400 and 8401) officially finished their trial period and could be assigned to this route.

In August 2018, this route was approved for use with Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (6300-6459) buses.

In October 2019, in line with Citybus' 40th anniversary celebrations, an Enviro500 MMC (6493/VB9800), with a light yellow background and dark brown line livery design as in the early days of Citybus, was arranged to run on this route on a regular basis until July of the following year when it was switched to deploy on Route 20.

Ridership[]

Route 1 was once an important CMB route with a high frequency of service. On 22 August 1999, Citybus Route 5A was upgraded to a full-day service with lower fares, taking away a large number of Happy Valley passengers from this route. The merger made it the only route linking Happy Valley and the Central and Western District, and with the huge flow of passengers along the route, it is always crowded with passengers. However, due to the many traffic congestion black spots in Central and Western District and Wan Chai, it is not uncommon for passengers to be unable to board the bus in Wan Chai during the afternoon peak hours.

According to the information in the relevant documents of previous years, the ridership figures of this route are as follows:

  • February 1993 (CMB): Monthly ridership was 66,585.[24]
  • 2014: The average utilisation rate was about 72% during peak hours and about 41% during off-peak hours.[25]
  • 2015: The average utilisation rate during the busiest half hour was 88% before the opening of the Island Line West Extension and 51% afterwards, recording a drop in ridership.[26]
  • 2021: The peak hour patronage rate for the PM peak hour is about 70%, compared with about 40% for the AM peak hour on Route 1P.[27]

When the bus reached Hawthorn Road, the bus captain found that the bend was too narrow for him to make a turn and got stuck there. A number of Citybus engineers arrived at the scene to guide the bus captain, whom he had to move the bus forward and back several times before it could be unstuck.[46]
