Chuk Yuen Estate Bus Terminus (竹園邨巴士總站, Citybus Location Code CHY) is located opposite Wai Yuen House, Chuk Yuen North Estate, Chuk Yuen Road, Chuk Yuen, Wong Tai Sin District, Kowloon, opposite Wai Yuen House and Chuk Yuen Plaza in Chuk Yuen South Estate, near Chuk Yuen Stadium. It is an open-air bus terminus with a parallel platform design.

History[]

Chuk Yuen South Estate is one of the public rental housing estates in Wong Tai Sin District. The original site was Chuk Yuen Bungalow Area. The new estate was occupied in 1984, and the attached bus terminus was also gazetted on 5 May in the same year[1]. One month later, KMB Route 1 was extended from Wang Tau Hom to the above address, serving passengers to Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui. At the end of the next year, Route 11C originally terminating at Lok Fu was extended to the above address. It was not until Chuk Yuen South Estate developed towards Wong Tai Sin Temple that KMB launched new routes such as 5E, 7M, 2B, etc. to cope with the growing public transport demand.

This stop is one of the few public housing estate bus termini with the word "Estate" added to it by KMB, making it clearly distinguished from the "Chuk Yuen Bus Terminus" in Lower Wong Tai Sin Estate. However, the names of the two termini were too close, causing unnecessary misunderstandings. Therefore, the bus terminus located in Lower Wong Tai Sin Estate was renamed "Wong Tai Sin Terminus" the following year, while the name of this station remained as it was. Interestingly, the terminus of Cross-Harbour Bus Route 103 was extended to this point on 7 December in 1987, and the waste-utilisation of the "Chuk Yuen Bus Terminus" rollsign of Cross-Harbour Bus Route 106 by the frugal CMB has resulted in the strange phenomenon of interchange naming habits of CMB and KMB, which often add the word "Estate" to the terminus of public housing estates. Citybus, which took over Route 103, has never had the habit of using the word "Estate", so it continues to use the name "Chuk Yuen Bus Terminus".

Although the termini of the minibus routes 38M and 52 are both called Chuk Yuen Estate, they are not within this stop. The two termini are Chuk Yuen North Estate Minibus Terminus and Chuk Yuen South Estate Minibus Terminus. The now discontinued Route 65 has a stop on the roadside in front of Chuk Yuen Estate Bus Terminus, and makes a U-turn via Chuk Yuen Estate Bus Terminus. For details, see Chuk Yuen Market Minibus Terminus.

This terminus has always lacked a staff rest room for the use of bus captains. The bus company applied to the government to set up a rest room, but was opposed by residents and district councillors in the area. KMB later arranged for Bus Captains to dispatch an additional Dennis Dart (AA66/HV6963) on 30 November 2015 as an "employee rest bus" from 10 a.m. to evening every day. It parked at the main terminus from 10am to 9pm for the convenience of the bus captains when they take a rest.

Chuk Yuen South Estate and Chuk Yuen North Estate are two independent public housing estates, but the public generally refers to the two estates as "Chuk Yuen Estate".

Position changes in recent years[]

In mid-July 2010, the bus stop of Route 7M originally located at the end of the terminus was once moved to the eastbound side of Chuk Yuen Road, and buses traveling on this route did not enter the bus terminus. Route 2B used the original location of Route 7M.

Under the efforts of residents and district councilors, the bus stop for Route 7M was moved to the terminus, and the old stop of Route 2B was reused in mid-August 2010.

In mid-December 2011, due to road resurfacing works, the bus stop for Route 7M was temporarily relocated to the eastbound side of Chuk Yuen Road outside the Chuk Yuen Sports Center[3], omitting Chuk Yuen Estate Bus Terminus; the project was completed in March 2012, and the stop of Route 7M has been moved into the terminus. However, the KMB website has not been updated for some time, showing that Route 7M called at the roadside bus stop.
