Ching Cheung Road (呈祥道) is a road in Sham Shui Po District, Kowloon, straddling from Lung Cheung Road and Tai Po Road in the east to Kwai Chung Road and Tsing Kwai Highway in the west and is part of Route 7.

The section between Nob Hill and St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery is one of the boundary lines between the New Territories and Kowloon. At present, a number of bus routes run between Kowloon East and New Territories West via Ching Cheung Road and Lung Cheung Road, with no bus stops along Ching Cheung Road.

History[]

In the 1960s, the Government built a new road in the North Kowloon Foothills to link up the Kwun Tong Industrial Area and the Kwai Chung Container Terminals, of which the section between Lai Chi Kok and Shek Kip Mei was named Ching Cheung Road after the auspicious phrase "麟趾呈祥" in honour of the then Governor of Hong Kong, Sir David Clive Crosbie Trench.[1]

The 2.75-kilometre-long Ching Cheung Road was completed in two sections. The first section, connecting Tai Po Road and Castle Peak Road, was opened to traffic on 11 November 1966 by the then Secretary for Works, Mr. Alec Michael John Wright, and a memorial was erected at the Butterfly Valley Interchange Kwun Tong-bound entrance, which was gazetted as the Ching Cheung Road on the same day.[2] The second part, linking Castle Peak Road and Kwai Chung Road, was opened to traffic in 1978 and terminated at Kwai Chung Interchange at that time.[3]

Ching Cheung Road underwent a number of modifications, the first of which was carried out between 1994 and 1998, and included widening of Ching Cheung Road from a dual two-lane to a three-lane dual two-lane carriageway and levelling of the slopes at Butterfly Valley Interchange. On the other hand, to tie in with the opening of Route 3, the Government constructed a slip road at Ching Cheung Road near Kwai Chung Interchange to connect with Tsing Kwai Highway.

In the 21st century, the Government constructed Tsing Sha Highway and added a new entrance at Ching Cheung Road near Butterfly Valley Interchange to facilitate vehicles travelling to and from Sha Tin and Kwai Chung Container Terminals, so that vehicles travelling in and out of Kowloon East and Sha Tin had to bypass the slip road and the container terminal roundabout.

The section of Ching Cheung Road between Nob Hill and Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Cemetery is the boundary between Sham Shui Po District and Kwai Tsing districts. The section west of the Tsing Kwai Highway underpass belongs to Kwai Tsing district, while the rest of the road is entirely within Sham Shui Po district.

Structure[]

Ching Cheung Road is built on a hillside, partly elevated, and is very similar in nature to Lung Cheung Road, with Tai Po Road forming the boundary between the two roads.

The exits from Ching Cheung Road are all one-way, ending at Kwai Chung Interchange where Route 5 connects to Kwai Chung Road and Route 7 ends. Kwai Chung bound traffic can turn into Butterfly Valley Road or Castle Peak Road at Butterfly Valley Interchange for travelling to and from Lai Chi Kok or North Kwai Chung and vice versa. For Kowloon bound vehicles, one can travel from Ching Cheung Road to Tsing Sha Highway in the direction of Sha Tin. Those entering Tsing Sha Highway from Kowloon have to travel via the slip road of Ching Cheung Road to Kwai Chung Road, and then turn around at the Container Terminal roundabout to return to Ching Cheung Road eastbound before travelling to Tsing Sha Highway.

The speed limit on Ching Cheung Road is 70 kilometres per hour.
