Cheung Sha Wan Road (長沙灣道) is a major throughfare in Sham Shui Po District, Kowloon, which extends from Lai Chi Kok Bridge in Mei Foo to the junction with Boundary Street and Nathan Road, and is used by the most number of routes in the district.
Cheung Sha Wan Road has a shape, with the section between Mei Foo and Kom Tsun Street being one-way eastbound, and that between Kom Tsun Street and Kwong Cheung Street being two-way east-westbound, and the remaining parts being two-way north-southbound. KMB categorises it as a north-southbound road.
History[]
Construction for Cheung Sha Wan Road began in the 1920s, and was named Cheung Sha Wan Road with its terminus located at Cheung Sha Wan waterside near Yen Chow Street, which was gazetted on 23 September 1923.[2]
With the expansions underwent in the 1950s, Cheung Sha Wan Road was extended to Mei Foo in late 1960s to connect with Lai Chi Kok Flyover, replacing Un Chau Street and Castle Peak Road as the major arterial road in Sham Shui Po District.
Cheung Sha Wan Road generally reflects the industrial activities in the area, spanning the Cheung Sha Wan industrial area, clothes retail in Sham Shui Po Central, to the Mei Foo Sun Chuen, public housing estates and single block residential buildings - all along one road.
Structure and usage situation[]
Cheung Sha Wan Road is served by more bus routes than other parallel roads (e.g. Castle Peak Road, Lai Chi Kok Road, Un Chau Street, etc.), having a very busy traffic. Sham Shui Po section of Tsuen Wan Line was also built along Cheung Sha Wan Road.
Cheung Sha Wan Road generally runsin a north-southbound direction. However, due to structural problems, the section between Mei Foo and Kom Tsun Street has a one-way eastbound traffic while the section between Kom Tsun Street and Kwong Cheung Street has a two-way east-westbound traffic, rendering an unusual southbound indication for north-northeastern stops between Kom Tsun Street and Kwong Cheung Street by KMB. The section east of Kwong Cheung Street tuns in a northeastern-southwestern direction on both bounds.
