Cheung Sha Wan (長沙灣) is located in the northwestern part of Sham Shui Po District, and generally refers to the area around Cheung Sha Wan Industrial Area and Un Chau Estate.
Generally speaking, Cheung Sha Wan covers the area between Kom Tsun Street, Tonkin Street, Tonkin Street West and Lai Po Road, while So Uk Estate and Lei Cheng Uk Estate are often regarded independently as the "So Uk" area.
History[]
Cheung Sha Wan is located between Lai Chi Kok and Sham Shui Po. In the past, the landform was like a long sandy beach, which was called Cheung Sha Wan (lit. Long Sandy Bay) by the local villagers, and there was a small village named Cheung Sha Wan Village at the waterfront, which was also recorded in the "Records of Hsin-An County" published in the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. In the early 20th century, the government reclaimed the near-shore area and developed an industrial area in the west.
Before the war, Cheung Sha Wan Beach had been continuously reclaimed and the land was used for the construction of military barracks. With Hong Kong's economic development, the barracks were demolished and the area to the east of Hing Wah Street was gradually developed into a residential area, while industrial buildings were erected to the west of Hing Wah Street, and in recent years, a number of new commercial buildings have gradually appeared in the area. At present, the boundary between Cheung Sha Wan and Sham Shui Po is very ambiguous, and the area of Cheung Sha Wan from the north of Yen Chow Street to the south of Hing Wah Street can also be referred to as Sham Shui Po. The boundary between Cheung Sha Wan and Lai Chi Kok is clearer because of the existence of Butterfly Valley Road, but the naming of the Lai Chi Kok Station of the MTR Corporation Limited has made the misunderstanding even more serious.
The Cheung Sha Wan Industrial Estate was one of the earliest industrial areas in Hong Kong, with textile, garment and apparel retailing as its mainstay. With the relocation of industries to the north since the 1980s, the industrial estate has now transformed into a centre for commerce and industry, fashion wholesale and logistics. The Hong Kong Industrial Centre, Cheung Sha Wan Plaza and other shopping malls are the centre of fashion wholesaling and retailing, and large corporations such as Roche Textiles and Li & Fung Group companies are based in this area.
The south-eastern part of Cheung Sha Wan was dominated by public housing, with the early estates being Cheung Sha Wan Estate and Un Chau Estate, of which Cheung Sha Wan Estate has been demolished and its remains are at the present-day Asia Golf Club, and Un Chau Estate has been rebuilt. The Cheung Sha Wan Factory Estate, originally located near Tonkin Street, is now included in the redevelopment project of Un Chau Estate. In addition, the Government built Fortune Estate, one of the two rental estates in Cheung Sha Wan, to the northwest of Cheung Sha Wan Estate.
The south-western part of Cheung Sha Wan has always been a fresh provision distribution centre and a focal point of the logistics industry, with companies such as Kerry Logistics setting up warehouses there, the Vegetable Marketing Organization headquartered there, and the Cheung Sha Wan Slaughterhouse, which has long been closed.
After the completion of the West Kowloon Reclamation, Cheung Sha Wan and Stonecutters Island were connected. Coincidentally, the depots of the three franchised bus companies, namely KMB, Citybus and former NWFB, are centrally located at the site, and the public housing estate, Hoi Ying Estate, and the Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) housing estate, Hoi Lok Court, are situated to the west of the depot area, adjacent to the Cheung Sha Wan Wholesale Food Market and the Cheung Sha Wan Wholesale Fish Market. Completed in September 1993, the two markets provide wholesale facilities for imported vegetables, eggs and fish. [1]
Street/Road Structures[]
Cheung Sha Wan Road, Lai Chi Kok Road, Un Chau Street and Castle Peak Road are the most frequently used roads for franchised bus routes, with Un Chau Street being a one-way westbound road, Castle Peak Road a one-way eastbound road, Cheung Sha Wan Road and Lai Chi Kok Road being two-way roads, and the Tsuen Wan Line running along Cheung Sha Wan Road. Buses also access these roads via Tung Chau Street West, Tai Nan Street West, Hing Wah Street or Tonkin Street.
Four roads in the Cheung Sha Wan Industrial Area are named "xx West Street". Originally, the Government planned to extend four roads in Sham Shui Po Central to the Cheung Sha Wan Industrial Area, but the plan was later shelved due to changes in the plan, and the Government distinguished the four roads from the planned extension of Sham Shui Po Central Street by naming them "xx West Street". [2]
Many bus stops in Sham Shui Po and Cheung Sha Wan are named after neighbouring streets, resulting in a number of multiple stops under one name, e.g. Cheung Sha Wan Road, Lai Chi Kok Road, and Castle Peak Road all have bus stops named "Tai Nan West Street".
The West Kowloon Reclamation Area to the south of the West Kowloon Corridor is regarded as the boundary between the old and new Cheung Sha Wan. Although Route 8 (Tsing Sha Highway) passes through Cheung Sha Wan, vehicles from both sides cannot travel directly to and from Cheung Sha Wan via Tsing Sha Highway.
