Hong Kong Buses Wiki

Cheung On Bus Terminus (長安巴士總站[Remark 1][Remark 2], Citybus Location Code COE, whereas KMB and LWB Location Code 長安) is located Chun Fat House Cheung Fat Estate and On Ching House Cheung On Estate connecting to Cheung Fat Plaza in Tsing Yi North, Kwai Tsing District, New Territories.

KMB names this stop "Tsing Yi BBI - Cheung On Bus Terminus" (青衣轉車站-長安總站) while Citybus names it "Cheung On Estate" (長安邨).

As the Tam Kon Shan Interchange is located to the south of the bus terminus at Cheung On Estate, the Government has designed the terminus to facilitate buses of different routes to exit from Tsing Tsuen Road by designing the terminus to operate in an anti-clockwise direction, with all routes, irrespective of their direction of travel, entering from Tsing King Road, and departing from the terminus at Tam Kon Shan Road, so that buses do not have to cross the lanes of the opposite direction of travel to enter or leave the terminus, thereby reducing the impact on traffic.

History[]

The original site of Cheung On Estate was the Tsing Yi Typhoon Shelter and Shipyard. In the early 1980s, Tsing Yi Bridge (Tsing Yi South Bridge) was the only land link to Tsing Yi, and as Tsing Yi South was a heavy industrial area, heavy vehicles frequently drove over the bridge, resulting in serious wear and tear of the South Bridge. Reclamation works were carried out at Mun Tsai Tong in 1983 and Tsing Tsuen Bridge (Tsing Yi North Bridge) was constructed to relieve the load on the South Bridge and at the same time to cope with the population growth arising from the completion of future public housing estates in the Tsing Yi Town Centre.

The intake for Cheung On Estate began in 1987, and the attached bus terminus was gazetted on 4 December of the same year.[1] KMB Route 44M was moved to this stop on 20 December, and a number of KMB and LWB routes continued to run through it.

In the 1990s, the Rambler Channel was reclaimed inshore for the construction of the MTR Tsing Yi Station, and the Tsing Yi Promenade was built along the waterfront to form the existing Tsing Yi Town Centre. At present, apart from Route 68A to/from Tsing Yi Station, all KMB routes passing through Tsing Tsuen Bridge (such as double or circular routes) stop here, making Cheung On Estate Bus Terminus the hub of bus services on Tsing Yi Island.

Stop layout and facilities[]

Cheung On Bus Terminus adopts a parallel design, with the entire terminus platform roughly divided into front and rear sections, separated by a pedestrian walkway into left and right halves. Each half has its own dedicated entrance and exit. The rear section of the terminus near the entrance is narrower than the front section near the exit, and the far-right long double boarding bay connects the front and rear sections of the terminus.

In the front section of the bus terminal, the bus bay (1a) on the left side of the pedestrian walkway serves as a mid-route stop for franchised buses. LWB routes heading to Tung Chung and the KMB routes heading to Tsing Yi stop here, and it connects to the green minibus (GMB) stops and taxi stands (1b-2b) in the rear section; while 3b is a carriageway, allowing franchised buses, GMBs and Urban Taxis to enter this section.

As for the bus bays on the right side of the pedestrian walkway (2a-6a), bays 2a and 6a are intermediate stops for franchised buses. Long Win routes heading to Tsuen Wan/ Kwai Fong, and KMB routes heading towards the city. 3a-5a are bus termini, all connected to a dual-lane roadway (4b) near the entrance. The roadway edge features a franchised bus terminal, used only by cross-harbour routes during peak hours; The longest double bay (7a) on the far right connects the front and rear sections and also has a franchised bus stop, with routes heading to Kowloon Central, West, and Sha Tin and buses do not need to use the dual-lane roadway.

The open-air section in front of the station has a single-storey building housing the KMB regulator's room and a staff canteen.
