Chek Lap Kok (赤鱲角) is an island located in the western waters of Hong Kong, north of Tung Chung on Lantau Island in the Islands District, with an area of 20.91 square kilometres[1] and is the third largest island in Hong Kong. Originally a small island, it has been reclaimed to make way for the Hong Kong International Airport and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Hong Kong Port. The term "Airport Island" (機場島) is an informal term for Chek Lap Kok.

History[]

The Chinese name of Chek Lap Kok originates from a species of fish, red seabream (sparidae, "赤鱲" in Chinese), which used to be abundant in the nearby waters.

In 1992, the Government started the construction of the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok Island and Lam Chau. During the construction period, the government carried out reclamation works in the area. In addition to connecting the two islands, this provided a large amount of land for the construction of airport facilities. The Chek Lap Kok village on the island was relocated to Wong Lung Hang Road in the south-eastern part of Tung Chung, which is now known as Chek Lap Kok New Village. Most of the hills on Chek Lap Kok Island were levelled during the construction works, leaving the Scenic Hill and Pak Sha Tsui next to the south-eastern road crossing.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Hong Kong Port, which is an extension of the northeastern part of Chek Lap Kok, opened in October 2018, making Chek Lap Kok the third largest island in Hong Kong, and the reclamation works for the airport's third runway in the waters north of Chek Lap Kok was completed in 2022; the airport will be able to cope with an estimated additional 30 million passengers per year after the completion of the new passenger terminal building.

Road Structure[]

Hong Kong International Airport[]

After entering Chek Lap Kok via the expressway, Airport Road continues in an easterly direction to the Airport North Interchange. On the eastern side of Chek Lap Kok, there are large and small roads connecting the passenger terminal, various car parks and the AsiaWorld-Expo. The western and northern parts of the island are within the Airport Restricted Area (with aprons, runways, etc.). Public access to the south-western part of Chek Lap Kok, which is outside the Restricted Area, is only possible via the South Perimeter Road, which surrounds the south-western part of the island.

The southern part of Chek Lap Kok is connected to Tung Chung by a cross-bay bridge known as the "Chek Lap Kok South Road". The southern part of the island is the Airport Logistics Area, where various airlines and companies working at the Airport have offices. There are also a number of roundabouts on Chek Lap Kok Island, which enable Chek Lap Kok to cope with a certain amount of traffic flow and provide motorists with convenient access to different places.

HZMB Hong Kong Port[]

Chek Lap Kok Road is a road that runs across the entire artificial island of the HZMB Hong Kong Port, from the East Coast Road and Sky City Interchange at the Airport to the junction of the Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road and Shun Long Road in a easterly direction. There are also various roads beginning with the word "Shun" ("順") on the Port artificial island. Among them, Shun Fai Road and Shun Wui Road, which are circular in design, connect the departure level and arrival level of the Passenger Terminal Building respectively, and Shun Lin Road, which is outside the Frontier Closed Area (FCA), provides access to the Port car park outside the FCA.

The rest of the roads are FCA closed roads and only vehicles with FCA permits are allowed to enter. The HZMB Hong Kong Link Road also starts from the artificial island, runs through the Scenic Hill at Chek Lap Kok and its southern coastline, and extends all the way westward to the boundary between the waters of Guangdong and Hong Kong. In addition, the SkyPier Terminal Closed Flyover, which is a Closed Area Road, starts from the roundabout at ground level to the west of the Passenger Clearance Building and crosses the waters to connect to the SkyPier Terminal at the Airport, without any direct road connection to the non-Closed Area Road at the Airport SkyCity.

The Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road and Shun Long Road are the main external roads between the artificial island and the New Territories as well as the urban area, facilitating cross-boundary vehicles to travel to all parts of Hong Kong and providing an alternative to the Airport Road and the North Lantau Highway for vehicles travelling to and from the urban area.
